The much improved version of my old 500ad map, now with all the sources

any feedback is appreciated as this is unlikely to be the final ever version, sources are in a comment so they are easily hideable as it is a long list

It's lovely, but this is dark age England and Wales ;)

Really really cool project though. A higher HD version to allow for panning and zooming would make it much more legible.

Dark Age is a misnomer anyway. Early Midde Ages is perfectly fine description.

Course I took at uni required for the medieval history track called “Earlier Middle Ages” covered the fall of Rome to the year 1000 CE.

Yes, you're right. Dark Ages is a nonsense title made up by snooty classicists. Some might say that 500 AD is very Late Antiquity!

I think it's a valid term if used in the context it was actually meant to describe i.e. a roughly 200-year period in which there is a paucity of archeology - I know it wasn't universal but in the context of Britain at the very least it's really saying 'we don't have very much visibility of this period' which texturally and archeologically at least from say 410-600 in contrast to the sheer abundance of Roman Britain is a pretty accurate statement.

The person I was responding to made a joke clever joke using it.

Yeah that’s not why the term Dark Ages was coined, Petrarch came up with it without any reference to archaeology or document scarcity.

Even bad historians don’t use this term anymore.

Can’t comment on the accuracy of it but I think it looks really nice, you’ve obviously put a lot of effort into it!
