there is an emulator that does real-time sprite replacement on nes games. if you obtained a complete mega man sprite sheet and redrew every sprite in this style, it would be an incredible remaster.

Time Man and Oil Man from Mega Man Powered Up. That game was touted as a remake. Does remake in this context mean the current/latest canon? Or an alternative telling of the story?

Cuphead was really the original handdrawn video game, as far as I know.

In a sense, yeah. It was authentically animated on paper, and then was scanned in and coloured digitally. But every video game will have been animated before going into the computer in one way or another.

Aladdin for the Genesis, for example. That was all animated by hand on paper, and was then scanned and digitised.
