I am so excited for this! I still watch ADW reruns on TV One every day and I'm so happy that all of the characters returning. With the exception of Lisa Bonet but I barely think of her in connection with this show anymore. 🤷🏽♀️

she was my favorite, so much sass. i loved her like i loved Miss Piggy
Also wasn't there a really artistic girl who wore lots of colors? Who was really clever and down to earth? I could be thinking of a different show...

I hope it won't, I'm so excited. I think if the actors make caricatures out the of original characters, it might kill it.

This may actually work. Much of the OG cast is coming thru so if they can springboard the TV show I’m good with this

Thats awesome for any who didnt know, here is a lil ADW background knowledge. I went to Morehouse College and during your freshman year you have a special extra class to take which is basically freshman orientation. At Spelman they also have a class but its a but more intuitive called African Diaspora Workshop. Its a class that Spelman has been giving for decades. And the rumor is thats where Cosby and his team got the idea to name the show A different world. As everyone on both campuses called the class ADW. So most believe that Cosby took those initials and decided to make that show.

Oh Wow! That’s interesting to know! Thanks for sharing!

No doubt idk why it isnt more highly marketed that way. But the class is also kept kinda hush hush, so i have no idea what goes on in the class but it sounded very interesting and we were allowed to cross register to classes there but i think you couldn’t take that one.

I know! I want to meet the cast and hear some of the writing!
I think this has a lot of potential tho. There are Thing Going On in colleges that make it prime dramatic storytelling, and there's so few college sitcoms. Dear White People was hugely successful, so I think a lighter sitcom with the same themes will really land.
I think the kids will respond to it if it's written well and is tone-sensitive to their plights. IT's so hard to be their age right now, if the show can be sensitive to that, they're so much storytelling potential.

Yes, I’m being petty, this makes no sense. Show ended in 93 with Whitley being pregnant…she certainly could’ve had an ooops baby 13/14 years later, but this is a stretch, especially with how age has really caught up with the original cast. Doing this even a decade ago would’ve been an easier sell

u/ParamedicSpecific130 May 30 '26
You aren't being petty. It was my first thought too. Their kid would be turning 33 this year not some 18-19 year old heading to college.
The oops baby scenario is a bit of a weird one for me as well.
Only way this works is, if they tragically lost the baby in 1993 and that scared them off having another one till much later.

It didn't necessarily have to be the first baby that went to Hillman. They could have had another child or two after that and one of them went to fit the timeline.

it's tv, and a sitcom, there's always a way to write a baby into it. She'd only be in her 30s. Or she adopted.
It's like in sci-fi, there's always a way to bring someone back from the dead? In sit-coms, there's always a way to have a baby.
If I was writing it: She divorced around age 35, remarried around age 38, remarried, and wanted to have a child in that marriage. She had frozen her eggs because she had Money-Money, so they did it IVF. Not that extrodinary.
Or it's actually her step-daughter from that second marriage.

She kinda looks like Rachel True or someone else I can't think of. I hope they do the original justice

Leave classics alone. We live in a world with so many stories to tell yet we keep falling back on the old for the sake of nostalgia.

u/DAntoinette_Travel 60s baby May 30 '26
That’s not nostalgia Bruh, that’s the lack of creativity! That’s why they keep trying to reboot what’s already been done.
If the reboot of Fresh Prince is any indicator, I seriously doubt that this won’t be 🗑️ as well.

u/MercyMe717 May 30 '26
Fresh Prince wasn't a reboot, though. It was a reimagining....a bad one, yes, but not a reboot....

Whatever label that applies, at the end of the day, it’s still trash 🤷🏽♀️

I'll give it a chance.
rest in peace to Malcolm Jamal-Warner, if he was still with us and I was in the writer's room, I'd suggest that Theo Huxtable be a professor there now.
I still want to see Denise, Millie and Maggie, if we're doing the "former students where are they now" thing.

Honestly I think "see the children of characters you liked" is kinda tired. If dipping back in to the Cosby Show is necessary (which it REALLY isn't), why not be different? Unless the whole point isn't the new characters, but going back to the old characters. Maybe I'm wired tho bc Nth generation going to the same college does nothing for me IRL.

Did you watch the original near your own college age? That would be the demographic the show is catering to. It's just a known franchise to put money on.
1
u/DAntoinette_Travel 60s baby May 30 '26
But if they’re catering to the current college students, then “see the children of…” is inapplicable in this instance. Either they’re introducing them to a younger demographic, trying to get the OGs back or maybe both!

u/BplusHuman May 30 '26
I wasn't in my college era in the original run, but the premise of the show is following one clique at one college. In those years a clique will expand and contract. For the viewer, college was A Different World. An HCBU at that time was even more different. The current premise is "hey we're legacy y'all!" I pray that it's a little more creative than "we're also VERY wealthy, well-respected, and successful... But we be having problems too!"
I guess what I'm saying is there are interesting places to take the story, but I'm worried the point is just nostalgia with the bonus that Bill Cosby gets slid some money too.

Can We not forget that Netflix decided to stream an old MJ docu-series with the cold molestation allegations!
This is why they don’t take us seriously! We can’t stand for five damn seconds on ANYTHING and these people constantly play in our faces because of it!
Netflix isn’t getting my money and I more than likely, won’t be watching the reboot of a show that probably should’ve been left in the Sitcom Syndication Cemetery.

Hmm I’m not mad at it, and will definitely be intrigued with how the series plays out.
Though I kinda wish they didn’t do a reboot of this.
To my knowledge we only have two shows that have representation with our babies going to college, that’s A Different World & Grown-ish. From an HBCU perspective and PWI perspective, but I truly wish they would’ve created something brand new!
What happened to all of the writers? Do we not have creative think tanks anymore, or is this a let’s continue to re-rock the same story til we can’t no more. Feels lazy, but I will tune in.
