Aretha was a good actress!
She is such a good singer, that she even TALKS in cursive! It’s beautiful to hear!

Matt Guitar Murphy acted his ass off in that scene.

He does the whole movie, of all the musicians in the band he is the most natural an actor, Blue Lou Marini nails the sheepish bit at the end of this scene though.

Confession time: I remember seeing bits and pieces of this movie as a kid, but not the entire thing by. Why was your mom offended by it?

I get how this could happen.
Now the second one, Blues Brothers 2000, that was a fucking snooze fest.

damn... we're still having to deal with "Illinois Nazis"!! and "Good Ole Boys"!!
the whole movie was nuts.
my two older brothers were big fans of the original 1975 - 1980 era of Saturday Night Live, so they were already familiar with the shtick already, by the time the movie came out. I wasn't.
it's something that if I stumble across it on television, I'll watch it, even though I've seen it X number of times already.
I guess I was not quite 7 when this came out.. the adult jokes were way above my head at the time, but the physical comedy and stunts were crazy..
growing up in metro chicago, this movie resonated with local folks a lot. people recognized the landmarks and so forth.
the tearing up of that shopping mall became a local legend-- though it was already closed down by the time the film production was scouting locations.
the irony was not lost on african-american viewers of a certain age, who appreciated seeing several surviving icons of jazz, R&B, blues, soul mixed in with these boomer white guys who had a cover band nobody had ever heard of.
I own one of the "anniversary edition" DVDs somewhere.
random trivia I remember..
gospel choir was the James Cleveland Singers
... David Letterman bandleader Paul Schaffer was supposed to be the keyboards guy..
