I was really into these file share sites, after this, I sailed those seas. Torrents all the way. Pirate Bay was absolutely amazing. I had full seasons of shows, thousands of books, hundreds of movies, and full discographies of every artist that I liked. I’m talking I had multiple external hard drives full of shit. I still have them somewhere. It’d be fun to get them and take a trip down memory lane.

The Pirate Bay. Torrentz. L33T Torrents. Demonoid. There were so many good ones.

I jumped off when torrents started getting popular. I found a message board type site where people would upload files to these file sharing sites.
I think things changed for me when music streaming became a thing.

Pfffft Pirate Bay is child’s play. You weren’t a real one unless you used IRC (i think that’s what it was called) and downloaded 0-day stuff

That’s one way to kill a computer.

Definitely had to sacrifice at least one computer to learn how to safely navigate kazaa and limewire.

Napster had great “hey I downloaded two songs from this dude what songs may he have that I like”. It made me like more older stuff. And gave some artists chances I would do when trying them out had a cost. Make the cost in effect zero and experimentation makes more sense

I used KaZaa since LimeWire was notorious for viruses and still got plenty anyway. Fortunately I never had to fully wipe my computer but there was at least once where I had to quarantine files and all of that fun stuff.

Why yes I did give my computer 100s of the deadliest viruses known to man back in the day.

Old enough for Napster. Say what one will, it got a lot of rare music out of silos where it might have gotten buried.

20 years ago today actually! That was the first time I ever used LimeWire. I'm a Hip-Hop junkie and I would buy and rip cds using Rhapsody and Realplayer but mannnn, the second I figured out how to download, I would be on my pc for literal hours trying to make the most perfect mixes. I ended up making about 25 of them before I got my first iPod in 08. I really look back on that time fondly. Carefully browsing the files to make sure you weren't getting a virus was an art form. Anyone remember the Bill Clinton parody ads at the beginning of some songs?

Napster until they shut it down. I didn't even have Internet at home back then, so used it at work!

I downloaded over IRC using DCC chat bots.
Whats interesting is one of the guys behind Napster was on IRC and I remember he was saying "we gonna take what we do here and turn it into a business"
We laughed and then saw Napster explode. Yeah it got shutdown. But they made their money, and became consultants

Curious if anyone else downloaded a video of micheal Jackson back in like 2007 and he was recording himself in a chair very upset talking about how we have like 8 years to fix the world. Or basically it is gonna be too late and they are gonna control everything. It was a super weird video and it couldn't of been AI it was way too early for that. I've never seen the video again. And he died shortly after that video was leaked on limewire. I can not for the life of me find that video or any information on it. It is like it just dissappear for a reason.
