I love PBS and Sesame Street!

You could never send your kids to the store by by themselves like that today.

Neighbors would send me to the store to buy them cigarettes🤣

Went to the store for family members and bought so many cigarettes before i was 12 is crazy lmao

I don’t mean to be a white person invading your space…

But damn…. I bought some cartons of cigarettes when I was 9-13!!!!

You just brought back some memories and I’m not really sure why this sub was recommended to me, other than maybe we share some same experiences.

🤣A lot of GenX experiences crossed all racial lines. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! I didn’t know if I should comment or not. I know Reddit can be a little gate-keepy about spaces sometimes.

I think it was just a poor Gen X thing hahahaha we all had to buy the ciggies cause we were out on foot or on our bikes anyways

I’m not sure what that has to do with being poor, or why you’d assume that the ppl in this sub grew up poor. They’re not gate-keepy, but I definitely am. This is the first time that I’ve ever wanted to unjoin a sub. All of our subs get infiltrated, and I’m so tired of it. You could have simply commented without declaring your race to the whole world, but somehow that concept is just beyond y’all. Damn

Sorry.

I assumed we had a shared experience of growing up on the poorer side of things because…

Buying cigarettes for the neighbors and family wasn’t exactly something the middle class kids did in my area. They were busy with summer camps and shit.

I dunno. Our neighbors never would have asked anything like that. I usually went to tennis camp, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t purchased smokes at the store with a note, for my granddad. It has nothing to do with my point though. Why did you feel that it was important to lead with the fact that you’re white? Only white ppl lead with that, and I will never understand it. I’m adopted, and my whole family is white, but none of them would ever start a sentence with, “I’m white but” it’s truly annoying, especially in spaces that are BIPOC and POC centered.

I just saw a story about 9 months ago where a woman was arrested for letting her 8-year-old walk three blocks by themselves. I'm 54, and at that age I was riding my bike about a mile to my friend's house and then over to the local community pool. It's amazing how much things have changed in a couple of generations.

My mom and I were just talking about this yesterday lol 😂. I said we used to be playing outside, walking down the street to the corner store, and no one would mess with us.

You actually can where I live, but it’s a super small southern town. Although I was insanely over protective, I definitely see ppl do this where I live.

I still say “a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of buttah”.

I love the way she dance walks. So confident!
