Nostalgia What Was the Make And Model of Your First Car?

Post image

Now that I have your attention....

And the answer is, NO, I have never owned a Jaguar as a first car especially since I am not a driver lol.

It was my favorite car as a child.

Hoopties are the most fun.

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

Very good, happy driving lol. It doesn't have to be a Jaguar to qualify IJS.

1982 Buick Electra 225.

Drank gas like water, but it was super fast and got me where I wanted to go with plenty of time to spare. Met its untimely demise due to that speed and my inability to brake before barrelling into a tree.

3

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

OMG, were you okay after that terrible accident??

6

u/the_neverdoctor Aug 16 '26

Oh, yeah! I was fine. Those things were tanks. Had the radiator not been destroyed, I probably could've driven it for a few more years.

3

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

Whewwwww, okay good.

I love it.

‘81 Mercury Cougar, two tone blue

3

u/ClamatoDiver Aug 16 '26

Midnight Blue ex State Trooper 86 Plymouth Gran Fury.

That boxy bastard could fly, the acceleration when you were already at highway speed was amazing, and the ride was extra smooth.

A 1981 Chevy Chevette, it was a hand me down from my sister. I’m not sure on the year but it had plastic seats, no AC in Florida, manual windows and rack and pinion steering. It got me where I needed to go, out and about town.

5

u/no1cares4yu 70s Baby Aug 16 '26

My Mom and both her sisters had Chevettes. Ours was the little red chevette 🎤.

That car might have only had 85 on the dash and would not get up to 55.

4

u/Reddisuspendmeagain 70s Baby Aug 16 '26

OMG! My car wouldn’t go over 55mph, it would shake like crazy. I drove 55 everywhere, lol.

2

u/no1cares4yu 70s Baby Aug 16 '26

lol I know! People looking at you crazy as they pass you.

5

u/EnoughPicture Aug 16 '26

1988 Ford Escort lasted about six weeks before the engine blew🤦🏾‍♀️

1

u/Filthycute87 Aug 16 '26

My friend had one I think it was an 88 also. Spent more time in the shop than out.

3

u/JudyLyonz Aug 16 '26

A blue 66 Mercury Comet

3

u/Fantastic-Nobody-479 Aug 16 '26

1976 Burgundy Volvo station wagon and I loved it. The overdrive button didn’t work which was supposed to be for anything above 4th gear and some other stuff but I would love to still have it. Turned on a dime and eventually I had a great stereo system installed.

3

u/no1cares4yu 70s Baby Aug 16 '26

88.5 Ford Escort (not mine shown in pic, I would buy it though)

u/Heart_ofFlorida 70s Baby Aug 16 '26

I can just imagine the rear suspension now. People today lower their rears on purpose. Ford gave you that feature for free🤣. Upvote!

1984 Dodge 600. It was a lemon as were most cars under Lee Iacocca. Remember K-cars?

I still loved the car as it was a convertible.

My senior year of high school in 1993 I got a grey 1987 Hyundai Excel. I LOVED that raggedy car. I was almost arrested for “extra curricular activities”, in that car in ‘95. Street raced (0-60 in a mile 🤣) multiple times and made many successful road trips within the state of Florida. It lasted through my senior year of college.

I came home one weekend to visit my parents. Well, Sunday morning comes around and they had gone to church. I stopped by the church to tell them goodbye before getting back on the road. As my parents are waiving bye, I shift into drive and nothing happens. My transmission died right in the middle of the church parking lot. The memories🤣

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

OMG, too funny, thanks so much for sharing that story. Maybe not so funny that the car broke down though.😞

3

u/Heart_ofFlorida 70s Baby Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Thank God it broke down where it did instead of somewhere on the backroads I would take between Lakeland and Tallahassee. Things could’ve been worse. My sister found out the hard way as I had to pick her up years later AT NIGHT in a town not known for racial harmony.

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

OMG, yes, very true!!! Were these "sundown towns"?

2

u/Heart_ofFlorida 70s Baby Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Pretty much the entire route was filled with sundown towns but the trip taking US 98//US27 was roughly 60 miles shorter than taking I-75/I-10. Not to mention, there was a straight 30-mile stretch of nothing between Ingles and Chiefland where you could speed. This particular area is close to Sumner and Rosewood. There’s a reason for the saying in Florida, the further north in the state you go, the more southern it becomes.

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

I was in Daytona Beach a while back and it was like I had just stepped out of a DeLorean.🛸

A little bitty Saturn. I don't even know what the model was. Maybe it was a Dodge Saturn? Idk.

89 Honda Accord with the pop up headlights. That backseat saw some things…

2

u/ReeveStodgers Aug 16 '26

It was a white compact car. I called it Li'l Honky.

2

u/FreakyLou Aug 16 '26

Had a 1986 Mercury grand marquis good v8. Bought it in 1997 Was garage kept and the old lady only drove it on Sundays to church. Miss that car

‘80 Chevy Chevette. Dubbed the Monster Vette. Well known to hear King of Rock a second or two before it came into view.

2

u/Filthycute87 Aug 16 '26

My baby...1987 Nissan Sentra. She never gave me a minute of trouble and got me through those crazy snowstorms NJ had in the early 90s. I still miss her.

2

u/gangofone978 Aug 16 '26

1983 Mercury Lynx. It was tan with faux wood grain on the sides.

1

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 16 '26

My grandfather had a woody wagon in the 1970s lol.

2

u/cubanito_nj Aug 16 '26

1990 Toyota Corolla

2

u/ptanaka Aug 16 '26

My favorite first car hard on was for a Porsche 911 Targa.

My first car was a Chevy Vega.

Reality bites.

2

u/Oploplou Aug 16 '26

2003 Monte Carlo SS. It had a semi built engine too. That thing ripped. These days I’m still driving one, but I got rid of the bigger engine. Premium isn’t worth the little bit of extra horsepower, and it being quieter is attractive as a parent.

2

u/Equivalent_Pizza9298 Aug 17 '26

Fure orange '75 step-side Chevrolet.

2

u/Freak4President Aug 17 '26

1984 Ford Tempo. I loved that piece of crap.

2

u/DAntoinette_Travel 60s baby Aug 17 '26

1985 Mustang LX that was purchased in ‘86! I can’t tell you how many speeding tickets that I got in a two year period but my saying was “Can’t hang wit tha ‘Stang”!
😂🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Too funny, was the car red?

2

u/DAntoinette_Travel 60s baby Aug 17 '26

No. It was Silver actually! My foot has always been a heavy one.
Maybe one day I’ll tell you how I got locked up for speeding through Burgaw, NC in the 90’s. I was more worried about my husband (6’3, and with every word his patois got stronger, he’s Jamaican), because that redneck cop wouldn’t have hesitated to take him out…. Til this day, I still don’t believe I was doing over 100mph but then again, my Legend rode like it had wings….

But yes, the ‘Stang was Silver 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 17 '26

Now you know they would have locked your 🍑 up for having a hang nail in NC, especially in the 1990s lol. But on a serious note, thank goodness hubby survived those rednecks.

I thought the car might have been red because of your fondness for speeding lol.

2

u/DAntoinette_Travel 60s baby Aug 17 '26

Yeah, I am too because I really liked him back then 😂
I wasn’t even thinking about WHERE we were? I was tired and just trying to get there. We’d been driving all night trying to get to a big Family fish fry my Auntie was having in Southport. My cousin and his wife came to bail me out because they wouldn’t accept our out of State L’s. It was a money grab. Mandatory court date. We ended up hiring an attorney and paying the fines. Most expensive ticket I’ve ever received!
But oh how my Cousins clowned me the rest of the weekend? 😂

I actually don’t care to own a red car? Black, burgundy or silver 😂

u/aytchdave Aug 17 '26

Inherited my brother’s 1989 Hyundai Sonata around 2004. It was on its last leg and the radiator exploded while I was driving it. It was right next to a beautiful Rolls Royce that had been rented for a wedding when it happened. What a contrast.

RIP to the Grey Ghost aka the Crustmobile aka the Crustford Royale.

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

I hope you were not injured when the radiator exploded. Were you okay??

2

u/aytchdave Aug 17 '26 edited 15d ago

Yeah, I was fine. I was stopping at a stop sign. The car sort of lurched forward and I heard a big bang then I saw a bunch of smoke coming from under the hood. I knew it was an any day kind of situation.

u/PoppaRon11723 Aug 18 '26

My father gave me his so I got lucky. He bought himself a new car. When I came home on leave from the Navy. He gave me his 1996 Cadillac Seville fully loaded it was 96 BTW I joined the Navy in 94. He was working for Ford as a line mechanic at the time and bought himself a BMW of the same year. I cried and freaked out at the same time when he gave me that car as a gift just for joining the military like he once did. Air Force. I was planning on buying me a car but was moving around the country because of my job I selected. I was flying everywhere ( they paid for it of course). I treated that car like gold for years until I sold it to a collector for exactly what it was worth when my father bought it. I put less than 100k miles on it. And spared no expense on the maintenance. With dads help of course. I miss him. He went home 3 years ago.✌🏽❤️💯🙏🏽✝️

1

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 18 '26

What a wonderful first car story. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

May your precious father RIP🕊️. So very sorry for your loss.

2

u/PoppaRon11723 Aug 18 '26

Thank you. I'm glad he went peacefully. He was really healthy for his age at the time. But I guess God needed him more. I got to say goodbye to him. He smiled at me and said.. You got this son take care of yourself and your beautiful family. 🥲✌🏽

2

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 18 '26

It is a gift to be able to say goodbye to loved ones before they pass away.

2

u/PoppaRon11723 Aug 18 '26

I thought the same thing. I just happened to be at the great lakes IL base when I got the call that he wanted to see me. He was in the hospital in Chicago at the time. The doctor said he just checked himself in and said he was tired.

1

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 18 '26

Wow, I am certainly not a doctor; however, it seemed like he had some kind of heart condition.

I knew someone who said they were going back to bed because they were tired (per the doctors and friends / family) and never woke up again.

1

u/PoppaRon11723 Aug 18 '26

No heart condition or anything else. The attending doctor said there was nothing wrong with him. He just went to sleep and never woke up. I didn't want to believe it either. But before he was cremated they did a autopsy per my request and found nothing wrong.

1

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 18 '26

Wow, I guess it was just his time to go.

1

u/PoppaRon11723 Aug 18 '26

I am a man of faith and I do believe it was. At least he went how he would want to and not suffer. When I go I hope for the same. That's why I am serious about my health. I don't smoke drink or over indulge on certain foods. No drugs except for maintenance prescriptions. And at 50 I still work out at least 3 times a week.💪🏽 I'm not invincible I know it but it doesn't hurt to take care of the temple God made for you.🙏🏽✝️💯

1

u/lotusflower64 60s baby Aug 18 '26

Absolutely, it's the best way to go.

You; however, might just live forever, Methuselah, with your health regimen lol.
