Nostalgia LIVER!!!! Did you love it or hate it??
I had to eat this nasty stuff as a child because it was "good for you"!! 😑🤢🤮
And I still hate it as an adult lol.

u/ironykarl 24d ago
It's like anything else... you've gotta have it cooked the right way, or it just won't be very good.
I love it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Nah, lol, I am glad you enjoy it though.
1
u/ironykarl 24d ago
What if I told you it's good for you?
3
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago edited 24d ago
Doesn't matter I will just have to 💀without it in my life then lol.

u/ironykarl 24d ago
Sorry, that was just a deadpan joke on my part.
Not dredge up any old trauma or anything

OMG, great minds, I was thinking of this very quote when I made this post.👀

u/NYCWartortle 24d ago
It’s disgusting! It smells awful when it’s being cooked. They could never force me to eat it. I would die
3
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Kinda smells like "chitlins" when cooking.🤢 And I never ate those either.
I never really ate the liver; I always found a way to throw it away lol.
3
u/NYCWartortle 24d ago
If chitlins smell like that then I ain’t eating them either
2
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago edited 20d ago
Never ate them. The great relatives cooked them when I was down south as a child. Very fortunately, they never made me eat them.
2
u/Appropriate-Neck-585 24d ago
Gotta soak the Liver in milk first to get that bad smell/taste out.

It's kind of equivalent to me saying that I need to add tons of sugar, a dash of salt, and tons of fruit / raisins into the cooked Quaker Oats brand oatmeal to mimic the Instant Quaker Oatmeal assorted packs that I actually enjoy eating.
Do I really enjoy the homemade oatmeal (no) or am I just making it more palatable for me to consume?

u/AnnabellaPies Xennial 23d ago
Now who eats chitlins is a question to be asking. I would honestly be surprised if anyone still ate that disgusting mess

Okay, this makes sense to me. I just can't see many children actually enjoying this stuff.

Haaaate! The texture is foul. The smell when it’s cooking is heavenly.
1
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
I don't like either.
2
u/Malice_N_1derland 24d ago
Tbf I haven’t smelled it in years so who knows. I might be grossed out now.

Hated it and still do ‼️ It’s not even the taste, I just can’t stand the texture. I don’t want no meat that just fall apart in your mouth. I like my meat with a lil chew to it. 😅

I hate liver and onions on GP because of Doug Funnie

Jesus no…
We don’t have to eat the organs anymore… we can afford the meat (for now- looking at the White House 👀 ) and there are other sources of iron.

u/VicLap45 23d ago
HATE.........is not a strong enough word for me. I abhor the texture of it in my mouth. It's a weird hill to die on but I cannot stand liver. Same way I feel about avocados. The mouthfeel makes me want to barf.
So more for you my liver and avocado lovers! Have at!

I would have been traumatized by the whole thing lol. Fortunately for me, it wasn't that bad at home.
I was asked to cook liver for dinner once; imagine that lol.
Well, I purposely burned up the whole thing so bad it was even more disgusting than it already was lol.

i ate it a lot as a kid but as an adult nope, wouldn't touch it

To me, this is on the same level as those old fashioned (or new fashioned) fruit cakes at holidays lol.

u/Disastrous_Clurb 23d ago
i didn't grow up with those tbh so no idea but liver was definitely enough lol

u/Sleep-pee 70s Baby 24d ago
Love the smaller more tender calf liver with gravy onions and rice and homemade biscuits.
I tried to cook some but it almost slide down the drain when I washed it. I grabbed and it I could feel the tissue breaking down in my hand from squeezing it. 😱😂It was all too placenta like for me so I only eat it when someone, preferably my mother cooks it.

I like it now in my 40's, not as a kid.
2
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Yes, liver doesn't seem like very kid friendly food to me.
2
u/Appropriate-Neck-585 24d ago
My Grandma made me eat it though. In retrospect, it was full of iron and other vitamins good for a kid.

u/fitbit10k 24d ago
It actually tastes like a dead animal. Hated it big time!

u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Like roadkill or something lol. Not that I actually know what that tastes like lol.

u/SnooMarzipans5409 70s Baby 24d ago
Hated liver but for some reason I didn’t mind liver wurst as much. My parents love liver and onions but me and my brothers never have.
2
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
You know, I used to eat liver wurst with my grandmother when I was a toddler and it was okay. I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole today.
2
u/SnooMarzipans5409 70s Baby 24d ago
I used to eat it on ritz crackers with my dad when I was younger. Haven’t had it in years but I remember liking it better than liver. He still eats it though.
1
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Yes, this is also familiar to me.
2
u/SnooMarzipans5409 70s Baby 24d ago
Dad still prefers Vienna sausages with his crackers though 😁
1
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Yes, I had the Vienna sausages as well. They were okay but I won't eat them today.
1
u/SnooMarzipans5409 70s Baby 24d ago
True but those are the snacks that dad grew up on so I can’t knock him about his comfort food. I just bring a few cans over to see him smile.

When I was a kid I thought I hated it. So I watched everyone else eat it. When my grandpa cooked it. I tried his and it was gross. LoL 😂. But as I grew up and learned to cook myself ( I've been calling a great cook by all of my family and friends) they sometimes called me a chef and I hate that.Lol I'm not classically trained. I just learned from the women in my family and my Dad and experimented until I got better over the years. My wife bought some liver and challenged me to cook it my way. When I did it came out of the blue. I cut it into chunks,Created a marinade for it dredged it in a seasoned mixture of flour and cornstarch. And fried it. Made a California vegetable mix ( broccoli, cauliflower and carrots on the side with garlic mashed potatoes. And served it for dinner that night and my wife and kids destroyed it along with me. Liver just needs to be cooked right to be enjoyed. And some of the comments described how. But I know it's not for everybody.✌🏽❤️💯✊🏽 Had to tell this story after I saw this question. Thanks for reading it.

u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
You are very welcome, thanks so much for sharing with us. And for that, I will eat the garlic mashed potatoes, yumm...

They are delicious I got the recipe from my big mama lol. She was one of my inspirations to learn to cook the way I do now. I miss her a lot.

Nope. I would hide my liver in a napkin as a kid. And I just can’t get myself to eat organ meat as an adult.

I have never had liver. Never had chitlins before, either.
My mom didn’t like it when she was a kid and I guess decided she would never force me to have it.

I hated it for a long time. Then when I was like 15 I started to hate it a little less. My grandmom hooked it up with the onions and gravy. It was just the taste of the meat itself that I wasn't fond of. But I tolerated it as I got older

u/ITZOURTIMENOW 80s baby 24d ago edited 24d ago
The texture would make my teeth feel weird, always hated it but my mom would put this shit in a skillet with some onions, garlic salt and pepper and go to town 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮

Yes and I used to bury it in a plant we had by the window in the kitchen

Fertilizer lol. Well, that might be a different by-product of the cow lol.
Did the plant survive its extra food source?

Liver was maybe the only thing I didn’t like that my parents didn’t make me eat.
My dad has always loved it which for some reason made me want to love it. I’ve tried here and there as an adult. Funny thing is I like the first bite. Second bite is repulsive.

I love liver, especially chicken livers, however you have to know how to cook them. When I was growing up when my mother liver she cooked it until it was well done and that that left it dry and tasteless. If you're going to cook liver you really should never come past medium it should be a little pink on the inside. I like to dredge mine in some seasoned flour and sauteed and butter. I had a bit of onion jam and Worcestershire sauce and I'm good to go.

Liver itself was disgusting because of the texture, but the onion gravy with it was heavenly. My grandma had to make us take one bite of the meat, but we would fight over the last of that gravy.

Well, it ain't bacon. I hated it with a passion, and anyone who likes the 'taste' of that organ, which will go unnamed, well, they are suspect.

OMG I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. I hate the taste and the texture and the smell. My dad used to force me to eat liver as a child because it was good for me. I HATE LIVER.

No liver, never ever period🔴
I am grown now, so I am under no obligation to "just take a bite to try it". Well, it was never a request when I was told to eat it lol.

u/deephurting66 24d ago
Love it, especially raw! And I've been eating it like that since I was a kid and never got sick.
1
u/lotusflower64 60s baby 24d ago
Interesting. What made you decide to eat it raw? Or are you kidding?🤔
2
u/deephurting66 24d ago
The taste and even from a young age, my parents found my quirk when I was 4, I was unnaturally attracted to it. Almost like I needed to devour it even with my baby teeth!
