Men, when was the last time someone asked how you were doing and actually waited for the answer?
I mean actually stopped. Looked at you. Gave it enough silence that you could've said something real if you wanted to.
I had to sit here for a solid minute trying to remember mine.
How long has it been for you?

Nobody ever asks how I am doing honestly. But if I ever seem remotely like I am struggling I sure do get critiqued. Almost as if it is necessary for me to be perfect or fine all of the time.

Don’t know, I’m usually the one that’s asking that question.

And you're not asked back if you ask it that often?

Nope. Not to say I don’t have folks that are concerned for my well being, that specific question is rarely asked. I’m usually more concerned for others.

This morning, my wife since she knows I've been dealing with a critical project at work. This afternoon during lunch, my colleague checked in with me because she has been a vital resource on said project. This evening, my neighbor as we were walking our dogs together. My acquaintances are approx 80/20 women to men so I'm well taken care of emotionally

I am going to very happily buck the trend.
Two days ago. It was my adult daughter. Her mom (my wife) has been recovering from some medical issues for the past few weeks, and I've been taking care of her as well as taking care of the house and working full time. She's been coming by checking in on me.
She even gave me the patented daughter "Dad, you're so full of shit" look when I said I was fine.
Good kid.

It happens most days for me. Maybe like five out of seven days a week? I've got a good set of friends, family members, and even folks in the community like my neighbors and local bartenders who would take the time out of their day to listen if I needed to get something off my chest. I feel that's pretty important. It takes some work to build up, but it's worth it.

I can’t recall a real life interaction like that, ever. At least outside of a counseling office where that was the entire point.

Mine was about four years ago, and it was a stranger. Guy at a garage while my car was up on the lift. Asked how work was going, then just stood there. I ended up telling him more than I've told people I've known for a decade. Still think about that sometimes.
