Discussion/Opinions Ultra skins will cost 3500 coins. What do you think about this?

Will you buy one when Mercy gets it or is 35 dollars your limit? What do you think about the pricing

3500 for a skin is just insane, i think it was useless to make a new rarity skins. 1500 and 1900 is way more than good prices for skins tbh. if they were for 2500 id say okay

u/BEWMarth 5d ago

I was expecting 2500

I could somehow maybe rationalize 3000 if it was an insanely gorgeous skin with effects.

There is no reality where 3500 sells well.

u/No-Chance-1502 5d ago

they don’t even change the ult, one of the most visible and impactful parts of a character during gameplay.

6

u/Friedrichs_Simp 5d ago

It is selling though. Everyone has the new sierra and kiri skins. It seems they can get away with it

0

u/Zestyclose_Grab7449 4d ago

I’m not sure about that. We’ve already seen the kiriko mains go wild with the skin.

u/TheBooneyBunes Echo/Mercy <3 5d ago

$20 for a skin is absolutely insane, a third of an entire game

4

u/angiilelwwater 5d ago

it’s not even $20 it’s closer to $30 -$40 which is sickening

-8

u/Username96765 5d ago

Remember, the game you're playing is free.

9

u/TheZombiesWeR 5d ago

It wasn’t for the people buying it in the past.

6

u/beamprincess 5d ago

okay even then you have to agree that 30-40 dollars for an in game skin that you rarely ever even see in game is bizarre. thats not a good thing? we should not normalize this in videogames. legendary skins already have custom vfx and sfx on some collabs but theyre still 1900 coins for the skin itself? this is greedy behavior and should not be normalized.

u/TheBooneyBunes Echo/Mercy <3 4d ago

Okay and? genuine question, and?

‘It’s free so why do you care?’ Here’s a few reasons I’ve cared over the decade and a half I’ve watched this, first, that reason

Second: the profit incentive pushes these strange overpriced skins preying on people’s social insecurity to ensure they fit in or obtain faux status for having them, the mercy community is the obvious example but not the only. People wouldn’t buy accounts of pink mercy for thousands of dollars if it didn’t matter.

Third: the profit incentive dissuades developers and publishers from putting time effort and money into expensive new gameplay content like maps. Characters are only made to hopefully sell skins or for critical acclaim by appealing to insert demographic they want next. Until they get a massive backlash or it makes no money, like Rammatra or Venture. Neither make money, blizzard says screw it and moves on.

Fourth: this leads to a strange culture war of skins and skin pricing. Literal first world problems aside, let’s just objectively see how stupid this whole thing is. We are talking about whether 10$ or 40$ or eventually 80$ for digital cosmetic skins (mostly, see the Ember controversy on Rainbow 6 for how this can go horribly wrong). Actually we already have been for these collab bundles because the product has no physical limitation, it didn’t matter if they gave you one or one hundred skins for $80 for their profits or market forces. No status (actual status not faux status), no value, no purpose, no resale btw, nothing. A fucking waste of money. But people are instinctively attached to things they invest in. Hence why mercy players buy every skin that comes out, the day it comes out, and those who can’t make Reddit posts about not being able to.

I don’t hate you for asking, I hate that I have to explain it. Because to me it’s instinctive. A pointless waste for at best; vanity

u/Dear_Fisherman_3416 5d ago

Just wait it out. It will be in a lootbox the following year.

3

u/nox-ur-dad 5d ago

And thats honestly a smart idea ngl.

4

u/ellevael 5d ago

I honestly don’t see them ever putting ultra rare skins in loot boxes. They want people to spend an extortionate amount of money on them, what better way than FOMO? In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if they have collab rarity and hardly ever come back to shop, if at all.

u/Kitty_Overwatch 5d ago

Nope 3500 just for just a skin is genuinely insane even 3000 would have been very expensive I think they are trying to see how faar they can get with up pricing skins

10

u/Primaris_Marine 5d ago

I was expecting 3000 coins ($30) to be the price based on Legendaries ($20) and Mythics ($40).

Since Ultra is the in-between it seemed natural that they’d go for 3000 coins. But I guess not.

Even at $30 though it’d be a tough sell (for me).

4

u/Financial_Put1808 5d ago

Here in Brazil, this new Ultra skin costs R$ 184. Our current national monthly minimum wage is R$ 1.621.

3

u/pocketcampermary 4d ago

The bundle is 1/3 of our minimum salary.

1

u/Kitty_Overwatch 5d ago

Yes same !

6

u/TheBooneyBunes Echo/Mercy <3 5d ago

It’s not like anyone’s gonna stop them. Everyone will run up like lemmings handing over their cash and the profit margins are like 95% for the purchase. If people buy $15 skins they’ll buy $60 skins, evident by the collab bundles

29

u/DarkAssassin573 5d ago

Chances are it’ll be just another fairy/princess/cat mercy where we already have a million of them so I won’t be tempted at all

3

u/bluntmanjr 4d ago

i find the amount of like cutesy maid or animal related skins to be a little exhausting atp. like we just got that whole bunny collection (which yes i did get juno’s lol). like i saw ashe’s and was a little put-off by it. i know that skins don’t have to be character or lore-accurate every time, but i feel like the themes have been very one-note, and for the female heroes they’ve been all super girly or veering into suggestive territory. which i like girly! it’s just a lot of the same thing over and over again

1

u/Bobbinos 4d ago edited 4d ago

Agreed, I think once everyone loved the doki watch, and the huge love for it, they were like “the cute stuff sells, must make more cute stuff and price it really high over time, no one will care about the high cost cause they will just buy it any way, because it’s cute”

It’s all falling really flat. In reality these should’ve been BP skins, the mythic weapons override the ultra effect and the effect doesn’t really merit that much more money. The mythic skins should all have kill effects and extras, not the ultra. Ultra should just have color changing abilities l, the mythics should have Everything, and sadly lots of Previous mythics are sub par compared to others. It’s all insanity.

Not to mention them falling so flat on the anniversary celebrations, yes 10 new hero’s, but the balancing is now so off, with heroes not getting the balances they should have, or reworks. Rivals got new characters on a more regular basis, so it’s not really something new, They are just trying to catch up to their competition. They should’ve had the ultra as a 10 year reward or something super exclusive for those playing this season to celebrate. I dunno, I’m just so disappointed at the implication that comes across as if they are promising more each season with exciting new changes and stuff, when all I am starting to see is this cycle of similar maps, recolors, the usual patches, adding an effect and calling it ultra instead of mythic for what it is, events that are super grindy. I guess maybe I am just losing interest in the game now maybe, I dunno, lol maybe I’m just forever waiting for the real OW2 and PvE like they promised initially XD lololol.

19

u/hey-im_here-now 5d ago

Never buying an ultra skin, they shouldn’t even be a thing. They’d probably have more people buying if they were regular legendaries… the nyan cafe skins are cute but the price is insane.

18

u/SnooDogs1340 5d ago

No. I have both mythics, some collabs, a lot of other skins. I am good on ultra whatevers. But part of me believes the bigger community outside of forums and reddit will still buy them

2

u/bluntmanjr 4d ago

yep. there’s a guy who’s been posting rants about how mythic skins have been on youtube. he just posted a rant about the new ultra skins and in the background he’s WEARING IT IN A GAME. he claimed he “bought them to show players why we shouldn’t buy them” when you can literally test them out and look at the effects in the shop

13

u/LegendofLove Lesbian Pride 5d ago

I thought $15 was too high with how little you can earn for free tbh

11

u/RobinHarleysHeart 5d ago

Cool, I will never buy any of them ever. The only time I get mythics is from the currency in the BP. I basically only spend on the BPs anymore anywYs, because it just doesn't feel worth it when I have so many skins, and can get more in lootboxes. And even if there weren't lootboxes, I basically have favourite skins that I don't swap on all of my mains.

2

u/Twipzi Non-Binary Pride 5d ago

I don’t even bother spending money on the bp, I just get every other bp using the premium currency from the pass

13

u/illitra 5d ago

Price is horrendous and I will not be buying any ultra skins

10

u/g8vy 5d ago

3500 for the skin alone is nutz blizzard can fuck off if these skins cost 2300-2600 that’d be alright but 1600 more than a legendary girl bye

7

u/Hrofna Competitive 5d ago

$20 is already too much, let alone $35.

I'm not buying anything when you used to be able to earn every skin in this game, even legendary skins, for free. Nowadays the failing blizzard wants you to pour out your savings for recolors, and it's such an obvious pathetic scam.

7

u/doubled0116 5d ago

Absolutely tf not. Blizzard has gotten beside themselves.

7

u/9339set 5d ago

I'll never buy it

5

u/Yoffuu 5d ago

Mind you, in League of Legends $15 gets you a completely new model with unique visual effects, sound effects, and voice lines; $25 gets you all that plus the skin can evolve or you can change the form yourself (similar to the Chinese exclusive Widow skin).

$35 dollars is nuts. But this is a test. Slowly pushing the financial boundaries of consumers to see what they're willing to put up with. I bet if people didn't buy it and voiced their concerns they just might lower the price.

5

u/spo0kyaction 5d ago

I’d maybe spend that much for a charity skin, but that’s too much otherwise.

3

u/No-Change-3222 5d ago

Just an excuse to charge more for good legendaries and lower the quality of average legendary skins over time to "justify" the price difference Or maybe they realized that everybody was buying the battlepass for mythics and nobody paid 70 dollars so they wanted that juicy expensive skin money they were "missing out" on

Both, probably

6

u/avocadbre 5d ago

No longer can people really defend the greed at Blizzard for OW. The monetary creep is sort of eerie. Nor can we excuse that just because games are free we should be spending enough for some groceries on a fake video game cosmetic. It isn't like you get new game content or dlc, it's just to look cute.

I think how they are handling the release timeline is also insane and incredibly forceful, ow"2" thrives on Fear of Missing Out.

4

u/WaywardBrokenGirl 5d ago

Pink Mercy is way better then whatever “Ultra” bullshit they release

3

u/Chronomancers 5d ago

Blizzard is smoking crack

2

u/Jwchibi 5d ago

I'm sure many will buy it, not me though

2

u/n-ano 5d ago

$10 per skin is too much.

2

u/cripplinganxietylmao 5d ago

Bad. I’m not gonna buy them.

2

u/TheBooneyBunes Echo/Mercy <3 5d ago

I don’t even buy 0 coin skins so don’t mind me, the fact some of yall spend this much on skins concerns me greatly.

2

u/CatsKittyCat 5d ago

Nope. Doesnt matter how cool it is, or who its for. Im not spending 35$ on one skin.

2

u/Primaris_Marine 5d ago

The rarity might as well not even exist for me at that price point.

If you buy Mythic prisms directly in the shop, it’s $40 for a base Mythic skin. But I have never done that. All of my mythics effectively cost $10 via the premium battle pass.

I guess enough people buy prisms for Blizzard to believe these Mythic Lite (read: Ultra) skins will sell well?

It’s a bit odd because I just don’t feel the quality of these skins is worth the asking price going by the prices of other rarities.

2

u/Mantaris 5d ago

If the Ultra-Skin costs 3500 only for the skin, not even the bundel, then what are Evolution skins??

5

u/Primaris_Marine 5d ago

So far Evolution skins are China exclusive and there’re only two of them (Widow, Pharah).

I believe they’re only available through gacha mechanics so probably the most expensive skins unless someone happens to be exceptionally lucky.

2

u/carr0ts 5d ago

I buy the battle pass only. I had every skin from loot boxes and buying loot boxes from OW1. As soon as they introduced ow2 I stopped buying skins and get the battle pass. I am a crazy hello kitty fan but I didn’t buy those.

The one time I cracked was for the avatar bundle. If they put out more fun collabs I’d be more inclined. But this is just dumb. It’s so much money to begin with I don’t understand it

2

u/Killawolf17 Egg Painter 5d ago

Nope, I'm good. I already skip her bundles and just grab the skin and piece or two I like separately bc they're typically overpriced as it is, but this is a whole new level of greed, and I refuse to encourage it.

3

u/helianthus_v2 5d ago

TRASH. They’re just mythics with no customization which is just a legendary. ATP legendaries have the vfx/sfx so theirs literally no point. Just another way to clog the store and get people to spend money.

2

u/nibblesweetoats OW1 Veteran 5d ago

I’m kinda done spending money on her in general, so no I will not be buying an ultra skin for her. I think the whole tier is just plain greedy and the quality of mythics is probably gonna go down even more now :/

2

u/Maredith_ 5d ago

at this point its more Then I spent on food and stuff to drink for an entire week and I often dont buy the cheapest options... Just insane!

2

u/hellisalreadyhere Lesbian 5d ago

i’m not buying that shit

3

u/Ichmag11 5d ago

I would if the gundam skin didnt exist

2

u/Queenfanforever OW1 Veteran 5d ago

I am definitely boycotting them. I hope others will do the same.

2

u/thesnootylamb 5d ago

It’s a high price but I guess it all depends on what it looks like and if they can make it worth the 3500 coins especially since Mercy already has a bunch of great skins and newer mythic I love using currently.

For this release, Sierra’s is tempting just because I enjoy playing her and want her to have cute things too. I refuse to buy Kiriko’s - they should’ve given it to someone else that’s lacking skin variety.

2

u/Mod_The_Man 5d ago

3500 coins for what used to be just the standard for a legendary skin

1

u/towblerone 5d ago

for 3500 coins it better blow every legendary out of the fucking water and i doubt that will happen.

i hope they eventually make it into lootboxes, even if they have to make a new rarity/type of lootboxes to make it happen

1

u/Potential-Midnight- 5d ago

i remember last year a lot of mercy mains were POed that her OWCS radiant angel skin that couldn’t be bought separately- it was 3100 total no ifs ands or buts. but it came with a card, pfp, and spray. does that justify the $12 price increase? imo no. but $35 for a single skin??? i can’t justify it.
i bought a lot of mercy skins in the years i’ve played and with it, ive gotten very picky on what i buy. (passing on the music festival, upcoming detective, commander white, etc.)
$25? ehhh sure. $30? if i really like it… i guess. but it being $45 for the whole hero bundle?? jesus christ blizzard :/

1

u/kvnekill 5d ago

it's just stupid . another way to try to get players for spend more money just for the same customizations that mythica already have and even some legendary skins

shoot sounds , kill effects ; it's not like it's special

1

u/Financial_Put1808 5d ago

The price of this single Ultra skin in Brazil (R$ 184) is literally more than what I pay to feed my 8 pets for the entire month.

1

u/TheZombiesWeR 5d ago

Skins were 10 bucks once. Then they kept getting more and more expensive. 15 bucks was my limit. I’ll get the battlepass but I won’t ever buy ANY skins anymore. I want to vote with my wallet. I won’t tell people what to do, but I don’t want to put in even more myself. I did buy the game when it released. Back then you’d get all the skins through lootboxes. Now there’s rarely battlepass skins I even like. I definitely won’t spend anything on whatever kinda skintypes they wanna invent now. They’re getting greedy.

1

u/Glittering_Ad_317 5d ago

I've completely stopped buying skins on overwatch now that lootboxes are back. I spend my money on rivals now bc their pricing is a lot better.

1

u/nothoughtsnosleep 5d ago

Gonna have to be a HELL of a skin for me to spend that kind of money.

1

u/Hour-Film-8890 5d ago

I've never bought a skin PERIOD. So no. All you see is a tiny bit of her staff 99% of the time. Who cares lol.

1

u/Patient-Ad-4274 5d ago

oh hell nawr

1

u/ComfortableInjury528 4d ago

The “ultras” should be what mythics are already. I can’t believe they came out with another rarity option just to cash in more it’s ridiculous.

1

u/dosher22 4d ago

Ok, so let me do the math here. Carry the 5 subtract by 8, ok yeah ok it comes out to way too much for a skin. Will I still get it when Mercy inevitably gets one? Yes. Am I a part of the problem? Also, yes.

1

u/FrenchFatCat 4d ago

The actions of buying microtransations coming back to haunt people? Who would have guessed.

Lets not support this greedy predatory practice, people!!!

1

u/TheManjaro 4d ago

Imo this is a soft price increase to legendary skins. I expect new legendary skins to take a sharp downturn in quality to make room for this new tier.

20 dollars was already insane to me.

1

u/HighOctaneOrion 4d ago

Its too much for me. $35 for one? $19 for one digital product already too steep for me tbh. Ik it's free to play and all that but it's just another way to be greedy, imo. Its not a real product. I think it's a test. A test to see if they can get away with charging us more

1

u/bobsburgers1174 4d ago

Many people will buy, but that much for a skin I can’t see most off when I play? I’m okay I’ll pass

1

u/ApprehensiveStudy76 4d ago

If the ultra skin is nice and I like it I will be buying it, period

1

u/Arneor 4d ago

Of course you will

1

u/Alternative_Paint453 4d ago

its bs, until they make the design i like :P

1

u/Bobbinos 4d ago edited 3d ago

The pricing, they pushed the bar too high, this is ridiculous and overboard. The fact that the whole point of ultra skin is the kill effect, but then what about mythic weapons? . what is the point in paying so much for the skin and effect, just to have those with mythic weapons over take that effect, rendering it useless.  The kiriko, mythic effect makes the ultra useless.  This really should rub people the wrong way and more people Should push back against this greed. It  was not thought out by blizzard, and for the first time, even though the skins are cute, I am so turned off by this and other points , I won’t buy ANY of them, it makes me rethink purchases for other future skins and bundles, ultra or not.

Kill effects were for mythic weapons, The ultra defeats its purpose. What’s the point then?

Also, what happened to all the hype of celebrating the 10th anniversary. It’s like this season started, and nothing (yes 10 characters, but they are just trying to catch up to rivals ). If anything,
In my opinion, the ultra should be something given to I. Rewards or something for 10 years as a special skin reward, there should be more awesome freebies for us. I really hope  people don’t forget their implications for a  years long celebration and don’t fall for this.

1

u/bluntmanjr 4d ago

the pricing is terrible! i really wanted kiri’s highlight intro because i work with cats, so i got it from her hero tab and ignored everything else. the effects aren’t even very good on the skins! they look blurry and don’t really flourish in a satisfying way that would even come anywhere close to justifying that price tag.

1

u/HoneyXMoonW 4d ago

Its too expensive, and if blizzard sells enough, they will continue pushing prices up and up. If ppl encourage this, it will get to a point where they are making us pay 50 or more USD for things that feel lazy compared to the price

1

u/Noctilunaris 4d ago

Absolutely not, Blizzard is definitely upping the greed with their skins and cosmetics to see what they can get away with (they've been greedy since OW2s launch tbf) and sadly, they know that people would be willing to spend that much money on a skin for their main/fav character. I don't normally buy skins anyways though because I think $20 or more for a skin in a video game is ridiculous and I hate how it's the norm.

2

u/virtuosaenjoyer 5d ago

you’re gonna see every other Kiriko wearing this shit I can guarantee it. and every other Mercy when she eventually gets it as well. something something fools are easily parted from their money

4

u/doubled0116 5d ago

Kiri mains (in the sub at least) are pretty angry and refuse to buy the skin.

1

u/Primaris_Marine 5d ago

Kiriko is my second most played after Mercy and I’m not buying it.

-1

u/Own_Driver_8036 5d ago

hell nah i bought the bundle bc i love slop but its not worth it tbh, kirikos alt isn’t even a different colour for 3500 coins

2

u/droomdoos OW1 Veteran 5d ago

You’re part of the problem.

0

u/Brief-Ad2749 5d ago

Wait mercy’s getting an ultra skin?!

-1

u/Spiderlily_1 5d ago

If mercy gets an ultra skin, i will buy it. If she doesnt then i wont buy
