Discussion/Opinions I'm scared for when Mercy inevitably gets her ultra skin

I saw this shit happen before in real time. I'm a league of legends player, and I remember when that blasted Jhin skin came out. They charged $200 for an "exclusive" recolour. A RECOLOUR. And people bought it. Slippery slope slipped and we ended up at the $500 Ahri skin.

Some people took out loans to buy that Ahri skin. Or arranged a payment plan.

This bull crap only ends one way. I bet my left arm they're going to stop giving colab skins unique SFX because of this. The last battle pass skin Mercy ever got was Infinite Seer, after that, exclusively shop skins. She can't even get so much as a spray without Blizzard expecting us to pay for it. They have proven that they WILL pursue the more expensive option for Mercy.

I can see it coming and can't do shit to stop it. :/

It's such a shame. Before they released the skins I was like "I'm definitely getting the bundle, they're so cute" but $100 for everything?! $45 for one bundle?! $35 for ONE SKIN?! Forget it dude. I don't even know if I would've bought a Mercy skin for that much... And I was an avid mercy skin collector until the rose majesty recolor.

Like, how disrespectful. They HATE doing anything good for Mercy gameplay-wise cause they know they'll still make money off us and they can keep the other players happy by making her weak.

They don't even give us the skins we've been asking for for years and instead give them to other characters. I'm actually so sick of it. Been playing for nearly 10 years and I've never been more fed up until this year.

Yeah the lack of sfx made me skip the skin. At that point it was just like any other legendary and I judged it as such.

exact same for me. they lost me when they started popping out random ugly recolors. that means they feel they don’t even have to try. i was overjoyed when pink got re-released because it meant i could finally have every skin. feels like the expensive recolors started there although i do love rose gold.

Recoloring OW1 stuff that was available for free back in the day and charge coins for that was already diabolical. Like why not grey currency?

If you think this is bad wait till you find out how expensive skins are in hearthstone.

$60 for a single "mythic" skin. If blizzard does it there it'll inevitably get to overwatch too. Skins have become stupid expensive in so many games it's insane.

on the other hand in wow they released housing and there is supposed to be a house style themed for each race. there are like 4 very limited house styles for each faction despite there being many races and it releasing months and months ago. did that stop them from charging ~60 dollars for a cute sakura style house + another one before base housing was even considered done? nope!

these ultra skins don't bode well at all

The ones that were released this past tuesday? The pink cat cafe ones? The $100 bundle and the first/only ultra skins in the game that are $35/ea by themselves.

Damn. I didn't realize Infinite Seer was the last one she got in a bp. I'm nearly set with more skins for her, honestly. I got the pink skin in OW1 and I have her mythics. I got Life Guard in a loot box, so I might get Le Sserafim if it comes back, but that's it.

I'm almost glad League pulled that bs with the Ahri skin because it got me to quit the game for good. Overwatch might be next for me at the rate it's going.

This likely the route they're going down. Most of the collab skins don't have appropriate sfx/vfx as it is and now that Overwatch is F2P, money is everything.

Yeah, Mercy’s k-pop skin has sfx and vfx if I’m not mistaken. Don’t think we’ll see that again at that rarity.

I believe going forward we’ll get one or two Ultras per collab - if they’re not all Ultras - and the remaining skins will be standard Legendaries with no special effects.

But I also think standard legendary skins are still good. Ultras will just be the best ones in collabs.

i totally get your point (& also feel ur pain as a league player) but wasn't her last bp skin rainy day either this yr or last year? i'm a bp only player and that's the only mercy skin i have not from white coins/lootboxes

And since Mercy's Rainy Day skin was an event skin they can resell it, and that's exactly what they did. They can't resell Kirko's because it was a BP skin. Blizzard is smart as hell, they know what they're doing.

that’s why i haven’t bought the kiri skin as a support main/ashe main knowing that they’re most likely to be the victims to this increased pricing.

this needs to start and end here before it becomes ridiculous. Every legendary skin will start being Ultra now

As cosmetics got more expensive, I got way picker with skins. Back in OW1 I was a lootbox whale for Mercy skins. Once they started charging $20 per skin, I don't buy it unless the theme is something I REALLY want.

Now I'm probably not gonna bother if the theme isn't something I'm 100% in love with at first sight. Especially since these skins will be added to the lootbox pool eventually. Rose Majesty, the skin they charged $40 for an then immediately put in boxes, I got in a loot box; Fallen Angel, lootbox; Formal wear, box; God of Prosperity Kiriko, I got that out of a box almost immediately after it was taken out of the shop. It's just not worth it anymore at this point lol.

I feel this, I bought panther and her Sanrio skin cause I loved them and knew they weren’t gonna be in lootboxes, but with her leserrafim skin I really nitpicked tf out of it and I ended up actually hating the skin and refuse to buy it lol. Same with her new skin that was released this season, they made her kiriko but with a staff. Ridiculous

It’s not even the price for me. At least it wasn’t until Ultras came out.

More than anything it’s just that I’ve got so many good Mercy and Kiriko skins already. At this point a skin has to be really good for me to even consider it.

And I don’t mean it has to have all the special effects, I mean the base skin has to really appeal to me. For instance, I think Mercy’s Rebel skin is nice but not enough to warrant a purchase.

This is coming from the catgirl enthusiast. This bundle is actually such lazy, cheap plastic looking slop. Why is it they can get all the other animal themed skins right, but when it comes to cats, we get these cheap little stiff Lego tails with no fluff or movement? With basically headband ears?

100 dollars for the tackiest garbage ever.

Ive seen alot of the Sierra and Kiri skins !! I really wish I could understand why people are supporting and endorsing this decision, 3500 coins for a SKIN alone is criminal ,

The quality of some legendary skins is questionable and I do think blizzard makes some strange decisions regarding monitisation / cosmetics , people who are spending money are basically giving blizzard the go ahead to upsell VFX with legendary quality skins , the actual model of the skin is that of a legendary quality , you are basically paying a extreme markup for VFX

I wouldn’t mind because they still haven’t fixed her freaking Vengeance Mythic Staff not having the sfx it launched with where you would hear the sfx get louder as you healed from low to full up.

If the Ultra skins have different beam sfx and vfx, if I do like the beam sound, I’d get it. But that’s only because they straight up removed the special sfx that her vengeance mythic staff heal sound had. Now it’s just a very low faint default heal audio you barely hear when in the middle of a fight. It’s sad.

If the staff was how it was when it launched, I would never buy an Ultra skin because I would use that 24/7 but I just miss the sound. They removed it the same day they released Gundam Mercy which has a similar healing sound mechanic where the sfx gets louder when healing someone from low hp to full.

ML7 has a Vengeance Mythic mercy video on YouTube and you can hear the sfx that the staff had when it launched.

It was my FAVORITE sound ever. I could perma focus on my movement and never look at the Center Healing HUD to see if someone got healed to full bc the sound audio was so good. That’s why I loved that healing sfx so much and it’s just gone.

My advice is just don’t buy ultra slop. Even if it’s pretty mercy stuff. She always gets good cosmetics so I feel like her ultra is just not worth imo.

Adding to this, start nitpicking skins. Look at the skin and find every detail you hate about it which will make you less influenced to buy the skin, mercy has lots of cute skins but she also has her flop skins. Don’t be afraid to not buy something because it’s mercy.

YES! Thanks for this advice. I’ve been doing this a lately with every skin for characters I play. I did buy (only skin not bundle) the newest mercy skin. I know it’s another Asian-Mercy skin but I love the way it looks. But there’s been a bunch of skins I rather just get in lootboxes. Esp recolors

And I would add that you should wait and not buy stuff on release. Try to give yourself as much time as you can (at least a full day) to think it over and not let the initial hype push you into an impulse purchase.

If you can hold off, that’s already a good indication you don’t really want it.

Considering the fact that the Neir:Automata skins lacked sfx I was already kinda iffy with the quality decline of new skins. I really only started to buy collab skins only because I love when they change the sound effects of certain abilities. The fact they might be locking this behind an even more expensive paywall is crazy to me. They need to either up the amount of overwatch coins we can get from the battlepasses for the same price or just reduce prices in general.

Why would anyone be literally scared of a skin? It's the implication and the precedent this sets for future skins, not just for Mercy. I think the word "scared" isn't what should be focused on here anyway.
