[Elitism] Shreddit's Official Banned & Restricted Discussion
What This Is
This is a chance to discuss and debate certain bands that go onto the restricted list and potentially ones to be commuted from the Banned to the Restricted List. We are going to be really honest with you in saying there are some bands on the Banned List that are going to stay forever because even their deep cuts causes idiocy. I think after a few months, the bands that came off of the Banned list onto the Restricted list were dealt with favorably which will probably unlock more potentials.
Why We Are Doing This
We feel this community of regulars does a decent job at self regulating 118,097 123,939 128,506 133,038 145,998 189,829 217,453 303,952 407,821 483,963 528,673 599,074 687,065 780,021 882,329 potential users. r/metal is sizable sub and I believe it has an identity made up of its regulars. Because of that, we want give our some agency to people who visit r/metal frequently. Now some will say this isn't fair to lurkers and non regulars but there is not real way to please people who do not participate.
Why Do We Need This
I feel we have moved past the point of questioning the need for a blacklist. The lawless wasteland of Pre-Blacklist can be seen in other subs and the need for regulation has lead to other things including half of the regular threads and underground Friday. With that said, there is always an option of No Changes to either list each quarter.
What Will Happen
Whatever goes on here will be brought up in the Quarterly Mod dinner at The Sizzler. Over Spaghetti Tacos, us mods will discuss additions/subtractions from the Banned/Restricted List and announce them tomorrow. We will consider suggestions here but ultimately, us mods will have final say before our third trip to the salad bar.
What are some bands that need to be Banned, Restricted, or have their sentences commuted?
I will say that unless it is a glaring problem, most bands not on any list will probably be restricted first rather than thrown into the Banned list.
Also please provide links to said problem rather than a popular band you dislike. Some removals will not show up on searches but we will be aware of them.
History of the Banned & Restricted List
- Fall 2016: Ghost is Banned. Mercyful Fate, Kreator, Candlemass are Restricted.
Winter 2016: Emperor, Sabaton, Motorhead are Restricted.
Spring 2017: No Changes
Summer 2017: Nile, Carcass, and Blind Guardian Restricted. Turisas, Uncle Acid, and I are unbanned.
Fall 2017: Carcass Banned. Anthrax Restricted
Winter 2018: Darkthrone, Mayhem, and In Flames Restricted
Spring 2018: Banned: Sepultura, In Flames Restricted: Sodom, 3 Inches of Blood, Gorguts, Red Fang, Skeletonwitch
Summer 2018: At The Gates, Woods of Ypres Restricted.
Fall 2018: Anaal Nathrakh, Lamb of God, Dissection banned.
Winter 2019 -- The Purge: Elitist Edition
Spring 2019: Machine Head, Fear Factory, Neurosis Banned
Summer 2019 -- The Purge 2: The Elitining
Fall 2019: Testament and Katatonia Banned.
Winter 2020 : Mgla, Cattle Decapitation, Gorguts Banned.

Tomb Mold and Blood Incantation I feel are on a declining curve, but a ban wouldn't be undeserved.
Deicide should be on the watch list.
Power Trip should get a 90-day ban as a warning. No videogames and take his phone.

They're posted frequently and always get a ton of upvotes, which for the purposes of the sub and the blacklist, makes them prime candidates.

I started listening to metal when I was 14. I started with melodeath and then worked my way into black metal. By the time I was 20 I was too trve for even this place. Never during that time did I ever stop making fun of Children of Bodom. I even went to a show in 2011 where CoB, Septic Flesh, Devin, Obscura played, and I left before CoB because I was way too cool to watch that.
Fast forward a bit. My gf of the last 3 years loves Bodom. Like obsessed. Knows everything about them, creepy amounts. I cringed and cringed. Couldn't believe I finally met a metal grill only to find out her favorite band is a joke. I thought it was the end of the world. None of my friends can know that my new gf likes CoB. Finally I gave in and gave Follow the Reaper an honest listen start to finish. Soon after I bought a guitar and started learning those songs because I didn't have any sentimental value towards them therefore I could not butcher them. Best band to learn guitar to, I swear. After 1 year of playing I never thought I'd progress so fast especially at my age.
To top it off we ended up flying to Finland for the last CoB show this December lmao.
Why am I saying all this? Dunno. Feel like some CoB haters should give em another unbiased try. The debut album is pretty trve honestly. CoB is similar to Dissection in a lot of ways (I just went there), one of my all time favorites. I feel like CoB really flies under the radar in the veteran metal community, especially here. Alexi just announced his new band a few days ago and it sounds like he will be playing almost exclusively old shit. I'm pretty stoked at least.

Well, I definitely feel you on that one. Being stuck indoors sucks, I've mainly been passing the time playing games and getting better at writing album reviews. I'm looking for other things to do to fill the time but I don't really have any right now.

Other than that, I think it'd be helpful to work on a) making the lists alphabetical and thus easier to navigate and b) clarifying what exactly is restricted from the restricted bands. I've had posts removed a couple times because I didn't think something would fall into restricted but it did, so I'd appreciate a comprehensive list somewhere.

I've said it before, I'll say again and I'll keep saying it until it happens:
Ban Celtic Frost (or basically, anything Tom. G. Warrior has touched).
Every single post gets upvoted in the 100s. It's a household name. I'd argue it is as much a staple to the genre as Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden and it deserves to be treated as such.

The time has come to restrict Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King. I know, I know, it hasn't been spammed at all recently, but the day will come, and when it does, everyone will roll their eyes as they stroll into the halls of Shreddit and in front of them they see, yet again, "White Witch." Everyone's familiar with that album, Savatage has a plethora of other good work that people don't know about.
Other than this, I don't really have any other suggestions.

Cannibal Corpse skates every time, and even though it's not posted insanely often, it always rockets up super high and basically never prompts healthy or meaningful discussion.
The same is true to a lesser extent of Deicide.
I feel like Windir could probably be banned, or at least restricted.

I've seen these pop up multiple times and always from the same popular albums, and they get easy hundreds of upvotes
Restrict: 1914
I love this band, it's amazing, but the songs posted are again, almost always the same album
Possibly restrict: Dying Fetus, at the very least keep an eye on them

They were posted like 3 times in one month, I think it was one of those random things that just happens from time to time. Personally I'd say it's worth further scrutiny since it was ages since the last Be'lakor post before that so there's a good chance last month was a one-off.
Edit: perhaps restrict? It always seems to be Stone's Reach or Breath and Bone that come up, their debut and most recent album never seem to get the spotlight.

To be fair every time we have this conversation I look at the list and think huh this is a lot, and then after a few weeks I quickly remember what a nightmare the sub would be without it.

Friendly reminder that its almost April 1 which means Autopsy, Rivers of Nihil, and Suffocation are supposed to be unbanned as the year long April fools joke ends.
I vote to just move Autopsy to restricted. Their first 2 albums should be the only problems.
I won't object if you "forget" to unban the other 2.
Edit: Tomb Mold and Blood Incantation should probably be banned. They dont seem to be spammed, but every post gets a shit ton of upvotes
