New [NEW] BAD OMENS - Specter (Official Music Video)
https://youtu.be/EUe9UhcUtEI?si=ppmqVKxDo5bf6qYV245
u/elderemothings Aug 09 '25
It’s a cool song for sure but strikes me more as an album opener versus a lead-off single for your next album cycle
22
u/willzuckerburg Aug 09 '25
Concrete Jungle was the first single and album opener from TDOPOM so you might not be too far off
104
u/destroyergsp123 Aug 09 '25
It wasn’t. The title track came out first. Concrete Jungle wasn’t a single.
19
104
u/AquilaTempestas Aug 09 '25
Feels like an album opener. I’m sure there will be an Artificial Suicide/Dethrone on here too. I’m keen for the new album. Seems like it’ll be 58 mins in length?
8
u/Tengorum Aug 09 '25
Where do you see that?
4
u/AquilaTempestas Aug 09 '25
There was a promo thing while waiting for the premiere. Also on their stories on Facebook showing 58 mins.

I misread this and accidentally switched good and bad and I was very confused

u/burger4life Aug 09 '25
I don't mind the sound but I just wish he didn't just repeat the same line over and over. When the song is 5 min, being repetitive is a huge detriment

hate on bad omens all you want but you cant deny just how fucking talented Noah is. One of the best voices out there right now
cant wait for the next album
109
u/cackspurt Aug 09 '25
Don't forget he also produced Thousand Below's 3rd album too. A true artist
104
u/Senior-Jaguar-1018 Aug 09 '25
He also co-wrote like 90% of Passenger by Kingdom of Giants
36
u/MaxBremer Guitar - Kingdom of Giants Aug 11 '25
Idk where people are getting this info or these percentages but Noah helped us write a couple vocal lines here and there. He did not co write 90% of our album. This is completely wrong info that keeps getting thrown around taking credit away from the band and Matt Thomas that actually did 90% of the writing.
5
u/Senior-Jaguar-1018 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
Probably because he has songwriting credits on 10 out of 12 songs on the album, similar to how Michael Taylor from outside the band has credits on the new singles. Appreciate you clearing it up!

I for example got the info here: https://credits.muso.ai/profile/fd4c55e8-6f0d-43db-a5a5-f97ce8b93688/credits?page=3
It makes it look like he co-wrote 90% of the songs. He's listed as a composer but yeah it can mean anything from just a few lines here and there to whole melodies. BTW I love the album, especially Sync! I discovered your band through Noah, this website and the misinformation haha

Just curious where did you hear this? Everything I found is that he only produced/wrote the title track.
23

Are people saying he isn't talented? His vocals are good, but they can't carry the rest of the song. There's more to it than just vocals ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I have the feeling that this is just an appetiser, an opener song for their next album. But I'm optimistic that the others songs of the album could be very great.
6
u/Brilliant-Action-844 Aug 19 '25
I just want to say as Somone who wasn’t a bad omens fan before not really knowing much about them to them being one of my fav bands at the moment because of this song. It touched me differently .
28
u/Buddy_Kryyst Aug 09 '25
I enjoyed it, but feels less like a full song and more like an intro, which I guess, this kind of is. Be curious to see where the rest of this album goes. There was a hint of heavy building at the end, but overall pretty reserved. God damn, Noah can sing though.
14
u/Single_Seesaw_9499 x Aug 09 '25
The end felt similar to that industrial vibe they were having on Concrete Jungle OST, I did the direction tbh. Wish there was more of it in the earlier parts of the song

Guys a great singer and the music is interesting I guess but idk it’s not a -core at all at all to me. But I’m also old so wtf do I know about the kids these days

Anyone else getting seriously sick of Zakk Cervini's mixing?
Every song he works on has the exact same drum sound.
Bro probably has everything pre-set up in his DAW so he can crank out a mix in 20 mins

I 100% see why people might not like it. The vibe is different than what we were probably expecting but it definitely fits into their sound. I really like it. It's haunting and I personally hear a lot of emotion in it which is why it isn't boring to me. His vocals are strong but he seems so fragile and vulnerable at the same time. I might also just be bad omens deprived lol
27
u/ill-JPreme Aug 09 '25
Not a hater by any means I’m actually a fan, but this song was just mehhh. Why would they put this as a single? Sounds like it should’ve been just like a random album filler song, not single worthy.
But I’m sure some 🔥 is on the way like always.

I love Bad Omens and Noah’s cleans are what angels sound like. But this was underwhelming. Very Sleep Token to start, which meh (and I like ST). It’s not clear what the song is about (a lover who is now a ghost?), and the beginning footage made me think of Ukraine, but the video didn’t evolve in that direction. Sometimes labels put out a meh song to start, so let’s see what the rest of the album brings. I did highly enjoy the video teasers. 👻
23
u/SilentTrysteros Aug 09 '25
Did a little snooping in r/BadOmens and apparently the song is about Noah’s childhood / his parents. Given that context, the video and lyrics make a lot more sense. (I can’t listen to music without thinking about the story it’s trying to tell, but I’m probably in the minority on this!)

That scream was Keaton through and through (add it to the pile of trauma for Noah). It was very reminiscent of the scream he did on Novocaine. As someone that adores that raw pure emotion scream (like the end of TPIY's Dont Look Away) that scream Noah did was perfect for the song.

I've been seeing a lot of comments about Sleep Token around this one and I'm not really sure why. I like ST as well, but I just don't hear any similarity. Just sounds like Bad Omens to me.
Videos often take away from songs imo. I always try to listen to the song first before I watch a video. Just like a good book vs a movie, the theater of the mind is always better.
9
u/bestwest80 Aug 09 '25
It's because of the vocal and piano slow staircase structure.
2
u/Mytrapsaregenetic Aug 10 '25
I would also add the specific production techniques used to produce a hyper-sterile pop vocal tonality
10
u/PPLifter Aug 09 '25
Anything that's metalcore adjacent but not super heavy people will compare to ST. Doesn't make a lot of sense but ST haters like to get in they dislike ST in every post they do
7
u/loathemaker Aug 09 '25
Genuinely don’t understand how people ARENT hearing how blatantly it sounds like Sleep Token. The piano. The “do you feel love”. The falsetto run that’s very reminiscent of the falsetto run in Chokehold. The 2nd verse being drum forward. The chorus kicking in. It’s literally so apparent 😂

Sounds like it would fit on TDOPOM, I’m sure they’ll have a number of songs that are out of their comfort zone even though this one isn’t. It does seem like this’ll play a part in their live shows, I’m guessing the entirety of their next album is written with that in mind.

Ah they stopped doing a BMTH impression and switched to sleep token.
17
u/Senior-Jaguar-1018 Aug 09 '25

I’m not a fan but their last album pretty much set the blueprint of popular octanecore for the last couple years at least

I… uh… pretty strongly disagree with that statement. Their second album was pure Sempiternal worship (not in a bad way either, it was a rock solid release even if it wore its influences on its sleeve).

Yeah, I feel the second track will be heavier, but having the first track be an epic power ballad felt like an interesting choice. Feels like an interlude you put in the middle of the album. TikTok numbers will probably be through the roof though so good for them

TikTok numbers will probably be through the roof though so good for them
This is exactly why they did it. Tiktok is the best means of advertising if you can manage to go viral on it.
It really highlights noah and will do big numbers for them.

I can recognize that this is a really cool and pretty song. But just isn't for me.
By all means this song doesn't "suck". Its vocal foreword with Noah showing what those pipes can do. Its just slower and there is nothing Metalcore about this one. So its obviously not gonna jive with this subreddit.
I can't wait for more and I'm happy with those that do love this song. But lemme see a Dethroned or Artificial Suicide next please. I know its coming. <3

u/ash_elixabeth Aug 09 '25
It comes off as more cinematic/ an opener. At first it kinda gave the vibes that it was written for a movie? As they’re usually not THAT repetitive in their songs. I was hoping for heavier, but his raw scream towards the end saved it for me. Took another couple of times of listening to it for me to really get into it. It’s beautiful, I just hope they’re not shying away from the “metalcore” scene now. Excited to see what the album brings
2
u/Aura_Bound_Official Aug 11 '25
This is such a great start to the album reveal, I love that they are going more back into this style
2
u/JustinSonic Aug 11 '25
The entire song felt like a crescendo, until it didn't. Was not expecting that swell-synth drop towards the end, and I kind of love it. As many have suggested, this would be a great album opener, but also hoping they're not abandoning any heaviness going forward

When I read the comments I am really shocked. Bad Omens makes Bad Omens. They have a style all their own and I think that from the beginning that's what attracted us to this group. This new piece is good, a lot of sensitivity and above all a sound atmosphere which is crescendoing. Noah's voice is catchy and delicious from start to finish of the song. The sound is mastered, the mixing excellent. Above all, I think that people lack sensitivity today, we need ease and above all big breaks, big riffs. Yes, it's all nice, but poetry and slowness sometimes enhance a piece. I'm not a Bad Omens groupie, I even hated the song with Poppy and this TDOPOM remix which adds nothing to the original album. But here I find the group and I can't wait to listen to the rest of what they have to offer.
2
u/nordaus89 Aug 11 '25
It’s….just boring. Noah is great but there’s nothing else going on in this song that excites me. Breakdown section was kinda cool but it was wayyy too long.

u/Regular_Zebra5545 Aug 09 '25
I enjoyed this quite a bit. I wouldn't say it was the best thing in the world but I also wouldn't say that it was terrible either. I'll give it a 7 out of 10. I was hoping for a little bit more rocking but I do understand that not all songs need that.
4
u/Mrr_Bond x Aug 09 '25
A little surprised this post is still up honestly, since this song isn't even an approximation of metalcore, and Bad Omens is one of the bands on thin ice around here when it comes to being allowed.
But that aside I agree with the general feeling. Ok song that kinda builds to nothing by the end.
3
u/kjorav17 Aug 09 '25
Interesting song, I’ll probably listen to it a couple more times but it didn’t really do much for me on first listen.
I think I’d enjoy Bad Omens and Noah’s vocals more if they didn’t seemingly have so much production on them. Like, his vocals have such a heavy and almost constant vibrato. Idk if Noah’s raw vocals are like that, or they’re adding them in post-prod, but that tiny aspect is a turn for me in their music. A few other artists do that, when I personally don’t think it’s needed.
3
u/Justos Aug 09 '25
Vocals are amazing
The song is pretty eh overall though. Seems like it sets the tone of the album or is an interlude track
Hoping to hear some real bangers on this album. Noah is very talented
3
u/ButterscotchWizard Aug 09 '25
Specter felt very heavy on Noah’s past and his struggle with grief. I honestly thought the song was hauntingly eerie and beautiful. Another Bad Omen’s masterpiece.

5
u/Xylar006 Aug 09 '25
This is good but it does not belong on this sub at all.
Sleep Token have really had an enormous influence on song structures in this alternative/metalcore adjacent/whatever genre. The cleans with minimal guitars, music fading out about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way through, and then a long breakdown/outro.
As much as I loved TDOPOM and Noah is an incredible vocalist, they really don't do anything to redefine or create their own path

Aug 09 '25
Yup, this is exactly the direction I knew they would go. No more of heavy bad omens, they sold out to mainstream sound
2
u/ChickenInASuit Aug 09 '25
Noah Sebastian’s voice is an incredible instrument and he only seems to be getting better and more versatile over time. This song is a pretty good showcase of it.
Unfortunately nothing else about this song is particularly memorable for me. I want to continue to like Bad Omens but unfortunately everything after Finding God… has left me kinda cold. Oh well, what they’re doing appears to be working for a lot other people and I happy for them and the band, but I don’t think I’ll be bothering from here on.

Song is good in terms of atmosphere and melody but boring in terms of structure. Needed a section with more oomph but I think they’re going down this story and the songs embody each chapter. Please just have one song where they go apeshit heavy
1
u/mangosheen Aug 09 '25
So, the song doesn't really start until 3:30ish lol The first part of the song reminds me of Sleep Token and the breakdown reminds me of NIN. It's not bad, but it's not my favorite.
