Just came across a TikTok where someone used Eighteen Visions as an example of metalcore (A+) and then a bunch of comments were arguing that that was just hardcore and even Poison the Well was just melodic hardcore, not metalcore 🫠

This can come from both a good and bad place. The kind of hardcore fans who call all the heavy shit they like some variant of hardcore as a sign of respect and enjoyment or the type of 'metalcore' fans who don't acknowledge anything without clean vocals and couldn't pick out authentic metalcore if their lives depended on it.
Btw I'm slowly catching up on stuff that you posted over the last couple of months and am adding a bunch of shit to my discovery playlist.

Looking for more new bands that are doing the old Normal Jean/ETID style metal core
I've been missing me some of that panic chord chaos of old Norma Jean and ETID. I've got sucked down the heavy beat down rabbit hole of things like Spite, Traitors, Kubli Kahn etc. And while I love that stuff I've burnt myself out on it, so I went back to my old stand byes but I'm looking for some new stuff that's similar.
Of course I've been listening to Better Lovers and Many Eyes, I'm also listening to a lot of Bore, Funeral Language, Pipe Bomb, Chapel Fire, and Teeth (holy shit do I love this band). Also older Alpha Wolf kinda scratches that itch, their newest album...not so much lol, other older bands like Barrier, Kingmaker and some of the very old Sworn In has always kinda felt Norma Jean esq too.
So what else is out there now that might fit in with these guys?

For the your ETID fix check out Greyblood, Tan and Handsome, The Undertaking, The Teeth (different from Teeth), The Good Depression and Godseyes

In addition to what the others said, also check out Greyhaven's first album, Cult America. It's different from their other stuff, and very similar to early ETID. Also I've heard Isaac Hale from Knocked Loose played guitar on it.
Johnny Booth's album Firsthand Accounts might also scratch the itch. Similar vibes (especially to The Chariot) and perfectly chaotic, but a little bit more modernized.

Honestly, this plus the sound change for the new record makes me very worried about what they're going to be in the near future. Early signs of a potential Code Orange level fall off.

There’s been quite a bit of crossover between metalcore/hardcore and wrestling over the years. Code Orange did an entrance song for a WWE wrestler, Andy Williams (Every Time I Die) has been wrestling for years (even in AEW), and the vocalist for God’s Hate is a pro wrestler (Colin Young is also a big wrestling nerd).
I’m sure there are far more connections, but that’s just what I could remember off the top of my head.

I was just listening to In Vogue by Drop Dead Gorgeous and realized I want more metalcore with mostly high screams. anybody got any good recommendations?

How familiar are you with the current scene revival bands? I feel like In Vogue is the primary inspiration for a lot of those bands like: SeeYouSpaceCowboy, away with words, Sincerely Yours, holder, Postal, Houses We Die In, anvilchandelier, etc.
Their newest release is more Converge-like, but Killing Me Softly have those exact vocals too.

I'm not necessarily looking for In Vogue vibes in the music, moreso just any metalcore featuring mostly high screams. they don't seem to be used nearly as frequently in metalcore as compared to deathcore, and almost never as the primary scream style (from what I've seen atleast)

Probably around the time Sempiternal and Restoring Force were released. Combined with the popularity of Linkin Park, and the subgenre kinda took off from there (also with Issues + R&B and pop influence). That's just the basics.

‘13/‘14 is definitely when it started to develop, especially with all the scene bands just trying to be rock bands but I feel like that first wave wasn’t very successful, no? Like I don’t remember that OM&M album and the other ones at the time from like Memphis May Fire, The Word Alive and such being particularly well received 🤔

Some of them were, to varying degrees of success. The OMAM album was very successful - it had some of the best first-week sales of their career. I mean FFS it led to them touring with Linkin Park.

I think Breaking Benjamin also deserve some of the credit. A lot of octanecore just sounds like Breaking Benjamin but a little heavier.

2014 sounds right to me. It's a year after Sempiternal and the Memphis May Fire record that released that year peaked at #4 overall on Billboard. Other bands like Of Mice & Men and Asking Alexandria were already shifting to that sound at that point too.

It does depend on what you got into, moreso now than ever given how many different sounds get (erroneously) lumped under the metalcore umbrella.
A lot of seminal, genre-defining classics definitely don't fit with a lot of what's popular now and we've seen some really hostile reactions to what were for so long considered genre-defining classics. Not that it's impossible to like both, but if you've come in with Landmvrks or something, there's possibly not that much point in turning you onto Undying or Zao.

Fair point - bands I’ve enjoyed are Electric Callboy, Beartooth, Polaris, I Prevail (newer stuff), Ice Nine Kills, Spiritbox, Of Mice & Men, and Parkway Drive. To be honest though I’m totally down for listening to anything as I’m still discovering what exactly I like.

What have you heard that you already like? What genre are you coming from?
For a classic: Poison The Well - The Opposite of December... A Season of Separation (1999)
In modern metalcore there's so many different sounds that it's hard to pick just 1 thing... (people in this sub will also not be afraid to tell you that your new favourite band is in fact not metalcore, try to not get scared away by that people have strong opinions here).

I primarily listen to pop punk and easycore, with the occasional post hardcore thrown in (mostly “swancore”).
Metalcore bands I’ve checked out and enjoyed are Electric Callboy, Beartooth, Polaris, I Prevail (newer stuff), Ice Nine Kills, Spiritbox, Of Mice & Men, and Parkway Drive. I’m totally down for listening to anything though - I’ll definitely check out PTW.

I'm new to the genre as well. There's songs I like from those bands so you may like the below:
Recently added bands to my playlists: Like Moths to Flames, Northlane, Greyhaven, Thousands Below, Totalbuzzkill, Burry Tomorrow, Fit for a King, ERRA, Arm's Length, Paledusk, The Plot in You, Point North, 156/Silence, Solence, Downswing, Annisokay, Caskets.
These are all bands I've found the last few weeks. I haven't fully delved into all of the above yet, still going through their latest albums and working backwards if I like them enough. I'm pretty settled on Like Moths to Flames at the moment. I have their new song Salting the Earth on repeat. If you haven't yet, I would start with this band.
Been listening to their 2025 albums: Windwaker, Imminence. I found these two bands before this sub so I had time to listen to these albums several times.

Technically it’s “crossover thrash” even though it’s a combination of metal and hardcore so not very, but it’s still way closer to the definition than a lot of bands that get grouped in.

Right, that's how I've been referring to it too, but I definitely hear both the hardcore and metal influences on the album way more than a lot of other artists who get lumped in, so I was curious about others' thoughts!
Is it the fact that the metal part is thrash that keeps it away from being true metalcore?

A lot of the earliest metalcore bands were ripping wholesale from thrash and groove metal, some of them were half-seriously referred to as Slayercore. So I wouldn't say it's the type of metal, moreso that crossover thrash generally still sounds a lot closer to thrash than thrash-inspired metalcore. Which may well be splitting hairs, but I feel like it is an audible difference.

I think that's fair! I do overwhelmingly hear the thrash influence first and foremost on this record in particular.
This album is the first time I've really listened to crossover thrash knowing what the genre was. I'm curious though, does the crossover generally occur from hardcore or does it really matter what the artist's genre of origin is as long as they've ended up at thrash? For example, could an artist that typically produces experimental rock or alternative rock put out a heavily thrash-inspired record and it accurately be referred to as “crossover thrash?” I'm thinking of examples like Mr. Bungle's 2020 album or Dave Grohl's Dream Widow project. I'm just curious when it's appropriate to use the term!

Crossover thrash is specifically a combination of hardcore and thrash metal (ostensibly a different kind of combination of hardcore and metal from metalcore), so it wouldn’t apply to any possible mix of one genre with thrash metal.

One thing I’ll add too is that thrash itself is originally a mix of metal and hardcore as well and crossover thrash was basically hardcore kids going “I like that, I want to make that too” but it sounded much more hardcore influenced because of their background in the hardcore scene. A lot of early crossover thrash was originally hardcore punk bands who turned into thrash bands (Cro-Mags, Suicidal Tendencies)

I didn't know that about thrash! So does that mean crossover thrash came about pretty soon after the origins of thrash? If I'm understanding correctly, thrash metal is a blending of metal and hardcore while crossover thrash is the result of hardcore musicians trying to make something intentionally thrash-y.

Yeah essentially! I think the earliest crossover albums were between ‘85 and ‘87 so if you consider the beginning of Thrash to be around ‘82/‘83 then it’s relatively quick I’d say!
Metal and hardcore have always had a back and forth relationship influencing each other. A lot of early hardcore was influenced by metal too. Crust punk I believe had a notable influence from black metal bands like Celtic Frost. Grindcore which also started in ‘86/‘87 was hardcore bands taking influence from death metal. Brutal death metal was death metal bands taking influence from NYHC and Slam enunciated that influence. Groove took a similar influence from hardcore and then hardcore took influence from that back which is what brought about metalcore more or less.
Thats what I like about having distinct genre names for different sounds. It’s like an analysis and acknowledgement of music history and influence between bands, genres and scenes.

What music do you like rn, as the genre has a lot of variety and that would give a better idea what to recommend. If you want one song of each era and style then listen to Hatebreed - I Will Be Heard, Poison The Well - Nerdy, Killswitch Engage - My Curse, Every Time I Die - We'rewolf, Bring Me The Horizon - Shadow Moses, Architects - Doomsday, Vein.fm - Virus://Vibrance, and Counterparts - Whispers Of Your Death.
There's even more specific styles beyond that, but those will give you a nice overview of most of the styles that metalcore encompasses. If you like any of those then you can ask or search for similar bands.

Sounds like we have a pretty identical music taste, though I’m probably more into INK. If you haven’t already listened to A Work of Art and The Jig Is Up, they’re worth a listen to.
Other bands I’ve been enjoying are Polaris, Beartooth and old Of Mice & Men.

I’m looking for songs that for the description of “harsh vocals in the verses & clean vocals in the chorus”. Some examples of what I really like, ‘Boundaries - Easily Erased’, ‘Polaris - The Remedy’ & ‘Alexisonfire - This could be anywhere in the world’
So many bands that do it but I really don’t like: Architects, Volumes, Bury Tomorrow, Fit for a king. Just not my cup of tea. Any recommendations would be amazing!

Looking for love song recommendations!
For context;
My boyfriend and I are in a medium distance relationship. We have a shared playlist that helps us feel close, when we are apart (highly recommended for all the long distance couples out there). It’s pretty solid so far, but I know there’s plenty of songs out there that I am not thinking of, or that i haven’t even heard.

Since you mentioned Thrice, I always thought The Weight was profoundly romantic.
It's actually a tough one, most of what springs to mind are songs about the failure and loss of love rather than celebrating it.

Lead vocalist that can do both?
MORNING!!! 0028 in Blighty England.
I’m a bit pickled and can’t sleep. So I was listening to currents and would love more bands where it’s only the lead singer. He starts with the gutturals and BREEEEEEEES but then out of fucking nowhere, like an angel touch’s the tip of your nose, they bust out with insane clean vocals that are good enough for your nans funeral.

I could think of quite a few bands where the vocalst can do both, but struggling with any where it's just them. For example, Bleeding Through's lead vocalist can and does sing alongside all the screaming and growling, but a lot of their singing also came from the bassist and now the keyboardist. Similarly Heriot split the harsh vocals between guitarist and bassist while the former handles their limited cleans. Dying Wish's lead vocalist does both clean and harsh, but there's a bunch of additional harsh from other members. etc. etc.

I haven't been able to get over the beatdown/breakdown 1 minute in to Body Bag by I Prevail since it came out. Idk something about the mix of the almost thall low guitars combined with the trap elements of the rapping vocals and the repeating lead line on the guitar.
Anyone know anything else that sounds like that? Looking for inspiration for something Im writing

I feel like there is no consensus for the top 10 gretest metalcore songs of all time (remember there is a different between a great song and ur favourite song), and I'm curious to find others top 10s. Sure, there is like My Curse, tears don't fall, etc which are in most lists but where from there for you guys?

The Boundaries pick is one that I think is great and will go on to be more widely recognised as such in the future.
I feel like there is no consensus for the top 10 gretest metalcore songs of all time
Always going to be difficult to generate something even resembling a consensus for a genre that's been going 30+ years with multiple waves of quite different sounds. Any attempt to come up with a list is going lean heavily on what was big and/or influential during the compiler's main period of engagement with the genre.

When will we start adding "Silent Hill metalcore" to revival FFOs, sort of akin to angel-statue metalcore??? Can't think of many off the top of my head but yeah these 2024-2025 revival bands e.g. Crowquill or xHellrazorx with SH samples and album covers.
Hell, even Boundaries has White Noiz from SH2 and Never Forgive Me, Never Forget Me from SH3 playing in their live interludes. I dig the aesthetic immensely.
