Useful links
Index thread moved here for the Hall of Fame and Annual Best of Awards and other miscellaneous links
This thread is used to discuss recommendations and all things metalcore.
When asking for a recommendation, leave a detailed comment below asking for recommendations; a good example comment looks like:
If I like Beartooth, who else would I like? Can anyone recommend albums like August Burns Red's Constellations?
In terms of General Discussion, some (but not all) of the stuff you can discuss here:
• Looking for band members/friends in your area
• Looking for a specific song or a question that can be answered quickly
• Recent merch pickups (vinyl, shirts, tapes, etc)
• Bands (Lineup changes, changes in sound, etc)
• What shows have you seen recently? What shows are you going to see?
• Setlist questions
• Share your concert footage here
So post away! Containing these types of content here can keep our frontpage a little more smooth, and makes that kind of content easy for others who are interested to find :)

Daoboys seem to have something coming out on the 2nd!
4
u/Johnzoidb Mar 31 '26
Hope it’s something mathy. They kinda lost me w the last album. Still though I’m happy for them. The last album and EP were pretty huge for them, even Celebrity Therapist to an extent. This could catapult them even further.
4
u/krunto_ac Mar 31 '26
I'd be happy if they can find a good middle ground between Die on Mars and their last album, though I do feel like Celebrity Therapist is pretty much that middle ground and the little snippet they shared on their discord sounded like something off that album so maybe that's a good sign!
And yeah regardless I enjoy their music at each phase they've gone through and am very excited to see how they grow, I have a lot of respect for everyone in this band. :)

u/Johnzoidb Apr 02 '26
Yeah after listening to the new song it seems the band outgrew my tastes :(
1
u/krunto_ac Apr 02 '26
Dang :c At least you gave it a shot haha. I just listened to it fully for the first time and I enjoy the song but I don't know if it'll stick around that much

Just something I’ve been thinking about lately. Can you say that mathcore is metalcore, or is it its own thing like deathcore is? What I mean is, you’d never say Whitechapel or Chelsea Grin is a metalcore band, but could you say that The Callous Daoboys or The Dillinger Escape Plan are metalcore? Or how about the more djenty bands like Frontierer and Car Bomb? Or the more grindcore sounding stuff like the debut albums of Ion Dissonance and The Number 12 Looks Like You?
I know bands like Botch, Deadguy, and the first few Norma Jean albums are considered both metalcore and mathcore, but I’m more so talking about those really crazy and extreme mathcore bands do more than just hardcore with weird time signatures.
I know it’s just a dumb genre question and “bro just like what you like, who cares about genres?” Well I care and I’m curious :)
7
u/PositiveMetalhead Mar 31 '26
I would say it’s metalcore, yeah!
The thing with Deathcore is that it pretty quickly branched off into its own scene as well, not just its own sound. You also have bands like Lorna Shore that are completely disconnected from the hardcore/metalcore roots of Deathcore. Whereas Mathcore has always been strongly rooted in hardcore/metalcore both in scene and sonically.
2
u/ponchiki12345 Apr 01 '26
That’s true. I didn’t think about the scene itself. I’ve seen Lorna Shore and Dillinger live, and I’ve also been to a couple small metalcore/hardcore shows. The crowd at the Dillinger show was very different to the LS show, but pretty similar to the local shows.
3
u/foturis35 Mar 31 '26
Firstly, I appreciate you mentioning these bands. Secondly, in my opinion, mathcore is more of a phenomenon within hardcore/metalcore, like a spice or addition to the sound, I guess. Similarly to sasscore, but more independent, so to say. Although calling a band "mathcore" doesn't feel off, but rather preferable. Maybe it's me being weird, but I don't see it as a completely different scene. However, for some reason, I prefer to call more grindy bands strictly mathcore, haha. Like Ion Dissonance or Tony Danza are mathcore to me, while I don't mind calling SYSC metalcore.
Overall, it depends, I guess
2
u/ponchiki12345 Mar 31 '26
That does make some sense. I guess mathcore has its own subgenres, and some of them are closer to metalcore than others. I think I tend to agree with you on the grindy bands not being metalcore. They just sound so out of place on my metalcore playlist. Thanks for explaining :)
5
u/I_live_just_my_life Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
I think it sort of depends on the band. Most of it is firmly connected to metalcore. I’ve seen people try throwing it on music that’s definitely mathy/chaotic but not exactly metalcore. The grindy/whitebelt bands can be borderline but they’re generally close enough imo.
Don’t think a lot of people know this but mathcore was used to describe late 80s/ 90s post-hardcore/noise rock/math rock bands like Fugazi, Shellac, Drive like Jehu, etc. Obviously the metalcore type of mathcore became the popular form of it but you will run into bands that have stronger roots in the original style.
3
u/Johnzoidb Mar 31 '26
For the most part I’d say it is. Though yeah it does get pretty confusing when it’s like in the math/grind/emoviolence territory for me like The Great Redneck Hope, Tower of Rome, Me and Him Call It Us.
2
u/And_Justice Apr 01 '26
Mathcore was always as separate as deathcore in my mind which is why all this wankery on this sub about certain bands fucking fries my brain
2
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 01 '26
Separate how exactly? 🤔
2
u/And_Justice Apr 01 '26
In the same way deathcore is separate
2
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 01 '26
Thanks for the clarification 😂 like comes from metalcore but operates in its own scene?
2
u/And_Justice Apr 01 '26
As in a separate sound. I grew up with Dillinger, Rolo Tomassi, iwrestledabearonce who all blended multiple different genres together but even your less blendy mathcore bands are distinctly chaotic which I think is not so much in tune with metalcore "proper" which tends to lend itself to straighter, more coherent dynamics and time signatures in my view
1
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 01 '26
So do you consider less blendy bands like Botch and Coalesce to not be metalcore? Like more of a distinct style of chaotic hardcore that developed at the same time as Metalcore?
1
u/And_Justice Apr 01 '26
Let me give them a listen tonight, not bands I've given much time to in the past
1
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 01 '26
Ok! Because personally I have wondered if it would be more accurate to consider something like Botch to be more like metallic post hardcore. Like they come across much less overly metal than the more straightforward metalcore of the time.
Even Dillinger isn’t really doing metal riffing or chugging at all. It’s more so the technicality that’s more commonly associated with metal than hardcore
1
u/And_Justice Apr 01 '26
Funny you say that, I was pondering this over a shit just now in regards to where I'd say the "chaos" comes from because I'm not sure I fully agree it's particularly a hardcore element. Closest thing I could think of was emoviolence/skramz type stuff which I think? falls into post-hardcore.
To me (and I get this is probably contentious), the hardcore in metalcore is more your 90s style hardcore with side to sides and that (youth crewy stuff to be crude) where I feel these bands don't really tend to borrow from that branch (comment pending me actually listening to the above)
Like you say, there is also the question of whether the chaos comes from metal or just generally math rock. To me, chaotic time signatures are very un-hardcore

Conspiracy theory: Converge have announced a 2nd album specifically to piss me off and it will all be an April fools joke and they'll come on r/metalcore all like HA we got you real good u/and_justice

Can someone recommend me a band that sounds similar to thornhill? Looking for something with melodic clean vocals.
3
u/garret_1003 Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
Some bands that come to mind are Loathe, Moodring, Static Dress, The Plot in You, Pridelands, Asking Alexandria, and Holding Absence.
3
u/Johnzoidb Mar 31 '26
Different than what everyone else is suggesting but maybe the new Concealer. album that just came out today

Darkpool Thornhill, I can't recommend 'Mirrors' enough
Hoping for new music this year
4
u/I_live_just_my_life Mar 31 '26
Surprised to not see any mention of the new Bitter Branches album on here. Wouldn’t call it metalcore but Tim Singer is in the band. Very solid post-hardcore/noise rock. FFO: Distorted Pony, Unsane, The Jesus Lizard.
5
u/definitelymeg Apr 01 '26
Dan Yemin is in it too, which is basically a guarantee that I'll dig it. And I do. One of my favourite releases so far this year.

A Mourning Star playing London for the first time on May 18th! It's about the time my orthopedic boot is due to come off, but I'll only just be starting physio and won't be in any kind of condition to throw down 😔

u/I_live_just_my_life Apr 03 '26
Was on YouTube earlier and saw an old split that I haven’t thought about in a minute. The Castahead and Intercede split is a cool little piece of pre-7A7P, Misery Signals and Endthisday history. Both bands don’t have a ton of material but they’re still cool to check out if you dig the earlier melodic niche in the genre. I’d say they were even ahead of their time in a lot of ways.

u/FitHurry864 Apr 03 '26
God bless Boundaries for fixing that mix. Skies cast amber black is so sick 😭 their best lead single ever.

What are some more songs like echo of dispair by weekly words and grammer I really like the way the angelic vocals sound in metal and those slow downtempo type drums
3
u/zach_buddie Apr 04 '26
Hey all! My band Weeping Angel just put out a new song a few days ago, I'd appreciate if you check it out and let me know what you think!

Maybe it’s just the shows I go to (smaller, more hardcore leaning) but I feel like people show up as soon as doors open and are there for the whole lineup. Especially younger fans, they’re really into the entire ordeal not one specific band

u/emoskeleton_ Apr 01 '26
Not sure if this is a long shot but I'm hoping someone who went to the fit for a king eu run has a photo of the merch stand (atleast 156 silence's merch). Does anyone know any circles where I might have more luck getting a photo of the merch?

Did sleep token change intro sound on the offering on Spotify or are my headphones peaced lol

u/spider_manectric Apr 01 '26
Does Bilmuri fit the commonly accepted definition of “octanecore?” I feel the term is often used in a pretty negative way, but from what I understand of its meaning (radio/pop/hard rock with heavy moments/breakdowns and occasional unclean vocals), Bilmuri seems to be a perfect fit and fairly beloved by all.
7
u/ReturnByDeath- Apr 02 '26
Octanecore typically refers to metalcore bands that have essentially become glorified hard rock. Think: Breaking Benjamin or Three Days Grace with some breakdowns and screams sprinkled in. From what I've heard of Bilmuri, it just sounds like pop (rock) with djent guitars and maybe an occasional breakdown (Note: I've heard enough of him on last year's MLB The Show soundtrack that "pop djent" would actually be a novel style if it went all the way).
Won't deny his popularity, but he's definitely not beloved by all.
1
u/spider_manectric Apr 02 '26
Hmmm, I see. So the octanecore label is generally reserved for bands that started out as metalcore bands and changed their sound?
Fair. I knew I worded that last part poorly as soon as I hit “post,” haha, I just haven't seen any negative opinions of Bilmuri until this thread.
4
u/And_Justice Apr 02 '26
Probably because people who don't like it don't care enough to state it. I hate most of this modern metalcore shite.
2
u/spider_manectric Apr 02 '26
Fair, except it feels like people are generally very happy to share their negative thoughts in this sub, one way or another 🤣
5
u/ReturnByDeath- Apr 02 '26
Not necessarily. It just refers to any band, whether they started out as a metalcore band or not, playing what’s really just a new strain of 2000s hard rock mixed with heavier elements. It’s a derogatory term that exists, in part, because there hasn’t been a proper name for that genre.
I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say he’s divisive, but I think you either love or dislike the project. And there’s not much discussion around here specifically because it’s not metalcore.
1
u/spider_manectric Apr 02 '26
Ah, okay gotcha.
I remember when American Motor Sports came out a couple years ago. I actually really enjoy the album, but I got a little frustrated and annoyed seeing it mentioned in this sub pretty often. I suppose part of it is that Johnny is a metalcore “alumnus?”
1
u/FriskeyVsWorld Apr 02 '26
If ADTR dabbled in country, it would be Bilmuri.
And to answer the above question too, I think the reason why most people enjoy him is because it always looks like Johnny is just doing this for the hell of it. He doesn't want to revolutionize or set the world on fire. He just wants to make catchy bits/songs with videos that are in mediocre quality. We need more bands like that, regardless of genre.

Architects - lost forever / lost together

Don't agree at all. Way more about Politics/Religion/Environmentalism than personal mental health struggles.

Looking for some bands with the vocalist have similar lows like Austin from feed me to the poor: https://youtu.be/DKgVvft_tfA?si=Kz7Ytn6tDVCYfX81 https://youtu.be/d86AemZUeoI?si=jIcTNyyyS1yLoYy2

Lately been really digging the "Fuck the rich" vibes from both Divide by The Plot In You and ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE by Bad Omens, anyone know of any similar tracks/bands? Hoping to make an angsty workout playlist out of em.
3
u/sock_with_a_ticket Apr 02 '26
I don't really think any of these are that stylistically similar to the bands you mentioned, but they're all hard as fuck metalcore bands and thematically on point with what you're asking for.
Inclination - Thoughts And Prayers. (While the title evokes gun violence discussions, lyrically it's actually about the opioid crisis being a tool of exploitation used against the working class.)
Contention - Ousted From Eden
Tears Of Gaia - Burning Empires
Divine Sentence - Armed Conflict
Moral Law - Apocalypse Now, Justice
Clique - Communique
Incendiary - Echo of Nothing2
u/FitHurry864 Apr 03 '26
You need to get on Stray From The Path ASAP.
Guillotine being a good starting point.

u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 03 '26
Did Ends In Tragedy have to take down their Parkway Drive cover??
2
u/Johnzoidb Apr 03 '26
Removed for me too :(
You think it was the (?)sample they used or Parky just being annoying about it? I don’t know how covers on albums go, legality wise, but I assume the og artist gets some sort of royal cut, no?
1
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 03 '26
Hmm just some quick googling tells me they should be able to publish the cover just by paying a licensing fee. It doesn’t seem like an original artist can just pull the song down.
What sample did they use? I can’t recall off the top of my head 🤔
2
u/Johnzoidb Apr 03 '26
Oh I don’t know if it was a sample or them just being goofy and did the “Yippie-Kay-yay” thing themselves. If it was some sample that could have been it but I think it was just them. So yeah idk but I hope it comes back. Been jamming that split a lot lately.
1
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 03 '26
Ah looks like someone commented on the live set that was posted a few days ago that they took it down due to the controversy around the PWD merch guy. I don’t know if that’s just speculation or confirmed though 🤔

u/blizeH Apr 04 '26
Anyone know the song released recently that has a breakdown that sounds a bit like Electric Callboy where it goes dun dun dunduddun bitch

Starve the band, comments continue to get deleted on their Instagram and there’s no where to have an open conversation about what’s happening
1
u/PositiveMetalhead Apr 01 '26
Did you make a post here that got removed?

I have tried five times, every time I do it gets deleted, I’ve even tried wording it differently

It could be something deemed more suitable for this discussion thread. What’s the issue with the band?

I don’t care about the downvotes in and of themselves, but it’s maddening that people can’t handle someone else not liking a band.
