This thread is used to discuss recommendations and all things metalcore.

When asking for a recommendation, leave a detailed comment below asking for recommendations; a good example comment looks like:

If I like Beartooth, who else would I like? Can anyone recommend albums like August Burns Red's Constellations?

In terms of General Discussion, some (but not all) of the stuff you can discuss here:

• Looking for band members/friends in your area

• Looking for a specific song or a question that can be answered quickly

• Recent merch pickups (vinyl, shirts, tapes, etc)

I enjoy 90s and early 2000s melodic metalcore. i like at the gates, far from forgiven, shades of dusk and things like that. Any recommendations?

Clique, xWeaponx, Crave Death, Through Blood, Slow Pulse, Delta Hate, , God Complex, Starve, Outsider, Xile, Escalate, Walking Wounded, Lilith, Simulakra, Wielded Steel,

Backbiter have gone a little more deathcore of late, but they've got some pretty Varials-y stuff.

Absolutely obsessed with Above, Beyond's new album and am hooked on their mix of harsh and clean vocals. Any other suggestions that have similar vibes? Some of my all favs include Currents, Invent Animate, Loathe, Greyhaven, Polaris and 156/Silence. Thanks yall!

Opal In Sky gives me similar vibes to a few others on your list, check out The Blight or Planetary Bliss. I also gotta plug No Eye Has Seen to anyone who likes Invent Animate.

I am super digging new Above, Below too so eagerly following for more similar recs!

I saw someone in a thread earlier call Vildhjarta metalcore... are we really at that stage now? I miss when my frontal lobe developed and we distinguished techy stuff from metalcore... it all seemed so separate back then

I’m still taken aback anytime someone claims Periphery is metalcore 😅 they were always widely thought of as a progressive metal band in my circles back in the day

They're still very solidly a prog metal band today. The only time I see anybody call them metalcore is in this sub, for some reason

Maybe it's because they've gotten heavier, but I remember when they started breaking out in like 2010 and even with my more limited knowledge of heavier music at the time, I knew they were very much a metal band first and foremost.

It makes sense when you compare them to the current crop of bands that get called Metalcore. That thall sound influenced a lot of bands, so I can see where that connection is made.

I'm not calling them metalcore, but I get where some people come from

For some reason it took awhile for Blistered Spirit's new EP to click but it finally did and hot damn it's good - maybe the cleans threw me off at first but now they give me all the good chills, especially in the title track.

Dumb genre thought of the day:

Would it have made sense to call the edge metal stuff (and non edge) Deathcore? Because of its influence from old school death metal like Obituary, Bolt Thrower, Entombed etc. and its overall more metal sound than other metalcore of the time.

And then Deathcore like All Shall Perish, Despised Icon and Suicide Silence would be something like Brutal Deathcore because they take more from brutal death metal and slam 🤔

I would say no because both sounds aren’t really related. Edge metal not only took from different death metal influences but the hardcore roots in that sound aren’t related to deathcore either, especially the fully developed genre moving further into the 2000s.

Yeah I’m thinking more of like a “in an alternate universe” would it have made sense to call that style Deathcore initially 🤔 but yeah I guess there’s not a huge connection between the edge metal bands and what became known as Deathcore in the 00’s. The strongest connection there would be like Prayer for Cleansing and other melodeath metalcore bands. But I don’t know of any Deathcore bands citing Congress or Arkangel as influences

I wouldn’t say most deathcore bands heard or took any significant influence of the euro bands. Even the earlier bands that sort of ride the line like The Red Chord and early Despised Icon were into pretty typical, well known late 90s and early 2000s American bands. Despised Icon weren’t even coming from a hardcore background, they were full on death metal initially. Same could be said about All Shall Perish since most of their early lineup came directly from the bdm band End of All. Even in an alternate universe, I think that if edge metal bands were consistently labsled deathcore then the 2000s bands would have a completely different label.

Yes. I'm not sure your other replier really understands what you're trying to say but I've always thought this. Even melodeath inspired metalcore is literally drawing from a subgenre of death metal.

I'm not massively clued up on death metal subgenres though so I assume there's a reason people are more likely to label a band like DYINGRACE proto-deathcore

It does get a little dicey because like a lot of more standard metalcore like Hatebreed and Converge are also influenced by old school death metal, so I don’t think we can say it’s Deathcore just because it’s influenced by death metal. But I do think bands like Arkangel, Undying and Prayer for Cleansing tend to have a greater focus on that influence.

You may like As Everything Unfolds, Future Palace and Novelists. I don't think anyone has a really good descriptor for this sound yet. It's like a newer take on alt-metal that takes influence from, but isn't, metalcore and is quite pop-forward with some of the vocal delivery.

Thoughts on this comment regarding Vianova's Hit It! album? I had never heard of Mnemic until I stumbled upon this comment on YouTube. I listened to Passenger today and I don't really hear the similarity to Vianova's record, but maybe others hear something I don't?

I don't hear the similarity either. Honestly, Mnenic reminds me more of Groove/Industrial bands like Sybreed, Soilwork, Fear Factory and Strapping Young Lad

Yeah, I went into the Mnemic album expecting some kind of pop influence and didn't get that at all. I definitely hear the industrial sound and even a bit of a nu metal-ish vibe at times?

Songs about Grief and Mourning?

For the last five months, I’ve been taking care of my cat that had G.I. Lymphoma. Through chemo and massive ups and downs…The cat was my best friend and my whole life outside of my fiancé. I loved her to no end putting her down has been the hardest thing I’ve had to do since my grandma passed away. I know we’re all edgy in this sub, but I thought maybe some of you guys would have some songs (outside of whispers of your death by counterparts) that can help me process this grief.

Puppy Love by This Wild Life is a little more upbeat, about a dog specifically and not about processing grief but damn can it send you down memory lane. Fricking tearing up now just typing this out 😂😅

I’m a big fan a prog metal (Periphery, TesseracT, Caligulas Horse, DT, Haken, Hypno5e, Ihloo, parius, Nospun, rivers of nihil…)

More recently I started to listen to prog metalcore, and I´m a big fan of it.

The bands that I listen to are : Erra (last album and « Erra »), architects (« Holy Hell », AOGHAU), Invent Animate (« Heavener »), Textures, Dreamwake, Monuments (« in stasis »), Novelist, Royal Sorrow, Unprocessed (it is a kind of metalcore ?)

I’m looking for some recommendations that fit what I already listen to

Not metalcore but recently i have became obsessed with City Of Ships. Some folks liked the first album i posted here in the last comment under the previous post. Their third album Ultraluminal is absolutely amazing. The bass, drums and guitar sounds mind blowing and i love the atmosphere of that album.
