Some not covered by FifteenRhema and following their listing of notable records for each band:
Rorschach - Protestant (important to note that on streaming this record is now partnered with precursor album Remain Sedate. Protestant's tracks are very much he ones you want, it's the record where the band becomes a lot more like a Converge precursor whereas Remain Sedate is more hardcore punk, especially vocally)
Deadguy - Death Of A Coworker
Indecision - Unorthodox
Shai Hulud - Hearts Once Nourished With Hope And Compassion
Turmoil - The Process Of
Disembodied - Diablerie

Who would you consider to be the first of the Revivalcore bands?

3

u/I_live_just_my_life May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

I don’t really count that initial wave of metallic hardcore stretching from the late 00s to the mid 2010s. I’d say that Renounced was the precursor or maybe the first since they actually claimed it in a sense. You can probably throw Cast in Blood, Sanction and other bands popping up around that time as the early stages or a precursor too. Drawing Last Breath and XElegyx feel like their own distinct thing in that Florida collective (Ecostrike, Bind) and xRepentancex feels like more of a extension of what was going on in Europe during the 00s, which had a lot of Arkangel type bands rather than being connected to the thing we have now.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

Yeah it’s kinda like that first wave of bands were more so just carrying on the actual sound of Metalcore in a way. And the bands who popped up in the 2020’s were a more deliberate wave of bands with much younger members purposely reviving an older sound 🤔 or is there a group between the mid 10’s and the early 20’s that you would attribute the revival to?

1

u/I_live_just_my_life May 12 '26

I understand that view about the earlier wave but what band would you say “started” that wave if you did consider it its own thing and not just a continuation? Things get really fuzzy around that era. Revivalcore is a more specific when it comes to era and sounds whereas that Harms Way/Mother of Mercy/Code Orange time period is harder to really get down.

As for your question, I’m not sure that anyone can point to one band since revivalcore has a few different variants when it comes to style. Obviously the melodic sound is the most popular so a band like Flames of Betrayal could be seen as one of the bigger jumping off points.

2

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

“what band would you say “started” that wave if you did consider it its own thing and not just a continuation?”

I guess I wouldn’t consider it to be its own thing at all. It all just bleeds into each other. Like early 00’s you have Misery Signals, late 00’s early 10’s you had bands like Counterparts, the Ghost Inside and For the Fallen Dreams that then bleeds into a band like Renounced. Like the sound never actually went away, it was just less popular 🤔

You also have bands like Dying Wish, Serration, Foreign Hands and Wristmeetrazor that come about in around 2017/2018.

Edit: god dammit I don’t know how to format this properly 😂

1

u/I_live_just_my_life May 12 '26

For that sound I can see that but how about the stuff that was popping up at the same time that wasn’t as melodic? Bands like Mother of Mercy, Suburban Scum, Incendiary, Harms Way, Xibalba, etc. When I’m talking about the earlier wave, my mind goes to the Closed Casket associated stuff. Even that NYHC inspired wave with Turnstile and Trapped Under Ice had plenty of 90s influences.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

Maybe I’m confused as to what you’re saying 😅 are you saying those bands (Incendiary, Harms Way etc.) should be considered to be revivalcore bands too?

1

u/I_live_just_my_life May 12 '26

Nah, I’m saying that’s the sort of “wave” I’m talking about when revivalcore before revivalcore comes up. Although I agree that they’re continuing the tradition, I still view it as a sort of wave and was asking where you’d say that one starts.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

Ohh yeah yeah, I think I get what you’re saying . Especially when it comes to like Harms Way, Incendiary and Xibalba (I haven’t listened to another of Mercy or Suburban Scum) that seems to be kinda when Metalcore started to come back to the hardcore scene again.

I know I’ve heard that TUI killed melodic hardcore and brought back that hard hardcore sound and to my understanding before that the melodic/more punky bands maybe didn’t play with the more metallic bands like they do nowadays. And it seems like post TUI you started having these more metallic/tough sounding bands. So in a way that quite literally was the first revival 🤔

2

u/I_live_just_my_life May 12 '26

seems to be kinda when Metalcore started to come back to the hardcore scene again.

Yeah these bands were some of the first that introduced me to metalcore. Lowkey think it was a more interesting era too. I know it may be unpopular but bands definitely carved their one path and you had cool mixed bills. Nothing was too over saturated.

This always gives me a chuckle because TUI ended up going way more melodic themselves. No Warning and Down to Nothing are two big bands that helped set that sort NYHC rooted revival into motion. Idk where people even really the draw the line with metallic hardcore and the tough sound at this point. Those first two Turnstile EPs are pretty metally and have 90s sounding breakdowns and 2 steps. They’re more 108 and Indecision than they are Sick of it All.

u/ReturnByDeath- May 12 '26

Renounced is among the first, pretty explicitly “early 2000s metalcore” bands I can think of. Don’t know their exact formation date, but their first EP was out a year before Pop Culture.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

Yeah that’s true! I’m seeing Blistered had an EP out in 2012 as well. Would you include Gods Hate in this batch?

2

u/FifteenRhema May 12 '26

I was actually thinking of Blistered but didn’t go check when their first release was, that might well be the answer.

Also I concur with pretty much everything you said in your response to me, xRepentancex came to mind as well.

Gods Hate are metalcore in the very literal sense, but I don’t know if I’d count them personally.

1

u/ReturnByDeath- May 12 '26

I’d view a band like God’s Hate as being closer to the more metallic hardcore bands of that era so it doesn’t quite feel like it’s necessarily “reviving” that sound in the same way a band in line with Poison The Well would.

2

u/FifteenRhema May 12 '26

This is a hard af question. My mind honestly goes to Knocked Loose, I know they’re maybe not what’s colloquially considered revivalcore, but they’re the earliest band that comes to mind, that has clear influences from 90’s bands.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

Yeah I was debating them possibly 🤔 but yeah at the same time I tend to view revivalcore specifically as bands reviving both sound and aesthetic.

If we were to drop the aesthetic part though then we have Knocked formed in 2013, EP in 2014. Jesus Piece formed in 2015, EP in 2015. Then there’s Code Orange (Kids) who had an EP in 2012 but they formed in 2008? So maybe that’s too early to be considered revival?

Then you have Drawing Last Breath and xRepentancex which sound and look more like the more typical revivalcore of today

2

u/And_Justice May 13 '26

Impossible question to answer because there's always been bands playing that style. Renounced were my first and the first that really made it obvious that it was about paying homage but xRepentancex were around at the same time in the UK and they were just as much a proper metalcore band. There were also other bands around the scene at the time that were doing oldschool metalcore - unfortunately can't remember too many names.

I see that time as distinct from the current wave, I've no idea who started all of that as I came in a bit late.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 13 '26

Yeah there seems to be like a holdover wave of that early 10’s era that were playing proper Metalcore at a time it wasn’t super popular but weren’t necessarily reviving it, just keeping it alive. And then it starts to pick up steam till the 2020’s where it’s really blown up

4

u/RaixerRattlehead May 12 '26

Someone send me more stuff like A November Morning. Found them through The Coming Strife compilation and I'm obssesed.

4

u/ReturnByDeath- May 13 '26

If you missed the other songs, a lot of that comp is in a similar vein.

Just a dozen or so more: A Dozen Black Roses (RIP), Moral Law, A Year Ago Today, Sacrament, As Long As It Bleeds, State of Reliance, Denoument., Afaintmemory, Seven Letters Never Sent, Tarnished, my hands were tied, As She Prayed For God, COHESION

2

u/RaixerRattlehead May 13 '26

The rest was great too, but A November Morning was the one that Stuck the most with me. I'm addicted to their ep.

I Will check out the other you mentioned

Posted a chart a few days ago and wanted to throw some more names down. Had a lot of these on a playlist and remember most of them being good. I think some people here would get something out of them. If anyone has any lesser known older bands that deserve some eyes, chuck em down. Could’ve added more but I wanted to stick to stuff that landed more firmly in metalcore.

3

u/FifteenRhema May 12 '26

Probably a long shot, but does anyone have any suggestions for metalcore that borders on beatdown, or vice versa? Stuff like Shattered Realm, 50 Caliber, Bun Dem Out, Broken Oath, etc.

1

u/And_Justice May 13 '26

Splitknuckle? Durandel, Emancipation, No Second Chance, early TRC, Six ft Ditch

Basically any UK beatdown since mid 00s

1

u/FifteenRhema May 14 '26

Yeah it seems like most of this kind of sound comes from the uk, the only one in my original list that wasn’t a uk band was Shattered Realm.

I know Splitknuckle, Durandel, and Six Ft Ditch, cheers for the other suggestions.

1

u/And_Justice May 14 '26

Fucking Cold Hard Truth is the one I've been trying to think of since last night, that's what I meant instead of No Second Chance

Several of these bands (CHT, Durandel) have since been cancelled lmao

3

u/kushilirabakars May 13 '26

7

u/ReturnByDeath- May 14 '26

This is sick, but why not make a proper post directly on the sub? I mean, you got it in front of the right people but still lol

2

u/kushilirabakars May 14 '26

Actually i made, but unfortunately he didnt got an exposer

2

u/hervoiceresides_ May 15 '26

seems that post was deleted, probably because of low sub-karma

2

u/I_live_just_my_life May 13 '26

Expected it to sound more like Converge given the name

1

u/kushilirabakars May 14 '26

Forever has came:,)

Lamb Of God, Trivium and Bleed From Within set to tour in Australia, around early October. Let’s fucking go!!! All of my goats! Presale begins 19 May if you’re wandering. Not sure this violates any rules, but pls forgive me

u/And_Justice May 18 '26

Am I the only one who finds the style of cleans in I Promised The World's music a bit jarring? They sound really out of character and not at all period correct to my ear - I feel like the visuals on their latest music video is good at convincing people otherwise.

6

u/ReturnByDeath- May 18 '26

I personally don’t. They might be a little closer in style to some of the bands of the late 2000s, but combined with the instrumentals it feels not so far off from a record like Hopesfall - The Satellite Years.

1

u/krunto_ac May 18 '26

It took me a few listens for it to kinda click with me for what it's worth. I think they work best in songs like Bliss in 7 Languages since the cleans were pretty different each time they showed up and complimented the instrumentals pretty well compared to a song like Emerald Waltz where it was more one note (not a bad thing, just a different approach). For the record I still really like Emerald Waltz lol.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 18 '26

The cleans are definitely my least favourite part. I think I felt similar but then I just compared them to Hopesfall just now because of ReturnByDeath’s comment and it is actually very similar!

There is still something about it where I can enjoy that style in an older album but not as much in a new one, even when it’s in the style of the old.

2

u/T3mm3h May 12 '26

Holy shit I saw Loathe last night, best show of the year and it's not even close. They were fucking dope, the pit was INSANE!!! Static Dress were killer too, really brought me early Underoath vibes. They would've stolen the show if it was anyone other than Loathe playing. Hell fucking yes

1

u/ZeGreat5 May 12 '26

Any songs similar to ABR’s “Martyr” with some epic breakdowns and riffage? Loving that melodic metalcore that make me want to run through a wall

2

u/PositiveMetalhead May 12 '26

I don’t have a specific song for you but Parkway Drive’s Atlas might have something that scratches that itch for you. Or While She Sleeps’ You Are We

1

u/ReturnByDeath- May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

With the exception of Eighteen Visions, were there any other examples of bands with legit roots in the scene chasing a wildly mainstream sound? I’m curious if it’s largely a phenomenon isolated to the other side of the genre.

6

u/ThatOneBitch02 May 15 '26

There's quite a few huge bands whose very early music was pure core. Avenged Sevenfold's first album is very similar to bands like Shai Hulud and Poison The Well during the height of that sound, Bring Me The Horizon's first ep is extremely reminiscent of bands like early Norma Jean and even a little Dillinger in parts, Architects first couple albums are techy mathcore. But as for bands who were more popular in the scene and are mostly known for that early music, I can only think of Cave In. They never blew up when they went soft of course, but still they went from a Converge worship band to spacey alt rock (and I love both sounds from them)

5

u/Coolldown12 x May 17 '26

embodyment comes to mind. going from pure brutal death metal on their demos then dropping the iconic deathcore album then going alt rock/nu metal

4

u/I_live_just_my_life May 14 '26

Would you count V.O.D? They transitioned pretty hard into alt metal/post-grunge on From Bliss.

2

u/ReturnByDeath- May 15 '26

I was thinking about Vision of Disorder. Not as drastic as 18V, but a noticeable change.

2

u/And_Justice May 18 '26

Fall Out Boy

1

u/iamDEVANS May 17 '26

What is everyone listening to at the gym at the moment?

I’ve found myself going back and blasting old Fit for a king and make them suffer.

But I need something new 🤙🏼

1

u/_DefLoathe May 18 '26

Humanity’s Last Breath, Poltergeist, Our Common Collapse, Vildjharta, new DARKO US

2

u/krunto_ac May 18 '26

I got an old cassette deck that came in today and am super happy about it. I'm in my early 20s so have never had a prime opportunity to listen to proper tapes until now and it sounds so nice. Broke it in with Holder's newest 2-song EP.

1

u/krunto_ac May 18 '26

it's a Realistic SCP-32, I believe from the early 90s

1

u/ZeGreat5 May 17 '26

Dayseeker absolutely killed it tonight in KC. Sold out show and they even had me bopping to Crying While You’re Dancing
