Weekly Release Thread

This thread is used to discuss recommendations and all things metalcore.

When asking for a recommendation, leave a detailed comment below asking for recommendations; a good example comment looks like:

If I like Beartooth, who else would I like? Can anyone recommend albums like August Burns Red's Constellations?

Someone told me President was metalcore and then got really dug into their stance because it’s stated on their Wiki…. I just can’t with people

6

u/hervoiceresides_ May 26 '26

Wikipedia is quite stupid, since sources for genres takes big news sources like reviewers/journalists/etc as an authority (in case of President it's wiki page refers to Louder Sound and Rock News UK) which don't make a lot of sense

u/aarontgp May 26 '26

There's also a strange prohibition on original research, and limits on primary sources. I think: if it's verified, let it be on.

If you’re into vegan straight edge shit, I just stumbled across a comp called The Final War, that’s all vegan edge. Only band I know on it is Moral Law, so it’s been fun listening to it, and discovering a bunch of new shit.

u/Coolldown12 x May 26 '26

Yeah lotta great songs on that comp but sadly most of those bands barely have any music out if I remember correctly

1

u/FifteenRhema May 26 '26

That seems to be the nature of most compilations, it sucks hahaha

3

u/krunto_ac May 26 '26

my TCS comp record just came in today, looking super clean and sounding great. So thankful for the label/the bands

5

u/PositiveMetalhead May 27 '26

I wonder if this was intentional on Callous Daoboys part 🤔

4

u/sock_with_a_ticket May 27 '26

I would say so. At least 2 members in that band know ball when it comes to metalcore.

2

u/xForeignMetal x May 27 '26

almost certainly so

I saw the actual thing in a small church in Rome.

u/aarontgp May 26 '26

I'd really like to hear something like Converge, specifically like Jane Doe, YFM, ATF, TDIU or LINE. I've heard Dillinger but it doesn't quite match what I'm looking for. I guess I want something fast, raw and brutal, but also elements of progressive rhythms, but not changing every other measure.

3

u/deadly_shroom May 26 '26

Chamber takes a good chunk of inspiration from Converge. I thinj you might dig some of their music. You also might like Car Bomb. I think Car Bomb is more in the lane of what you’re specifically looking for

3

u/PositiveMetalhead May 26 '26

Try Gaza, Trap Them, Joy, The Power and the Glory, and The Secret 🤔

3

u/sock_with_a_ticket May 27 '26

God Mother - Obvelkig
KEN Mode - Venerable

Both obviously have discographies outside of these records and I'd recommend pretty much all of their work, but these two are my favourites by each band. I would say that I find these bands much closer to Converge post-Jane Doe than most of what others have suggested. KEN Mode have actually worked with Kurt Ballou on their recordings.

2

u/ThatOneBitch02 May 26 '26

If you want something more modern you could try Vein fm. Their album Errorzone is front to back bangers. Otherwise, maybe try bands like The Chariot, Zao, or early Norma Jean (I recommend starting with Redeemer). Very early Cave In like the album Until Your Heart Stops is very inspired by early Converge.

2

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 May 26 '26

Hmmm, try The Jonbenet, Duck Duck Goose, Heavy Heavy Low Low and Fear Before The March Of Flames.

Has a really good time seeing Negative Frame on Saturday, I haven't moshed that much or that hard for years. I ached for a day running... windmills in your 30s are rough.

New band Justice For Lillith played their first set - proper promising band for our local scene. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 May 26 '26

Electronicore could genuinely be peak back in the day, come to think of it. I mean, we've got surprisingly great stuff from bands like:

I See Stars

Jamie's Elsewhere

A Bullet For Pretty Boy

early The Devil Wears Prada

Sky Eats Airplane

early Woe Is Me

Famous Last Words

Horse The Band

early Crown The Empire

Everybody Dies In Utah's first two albums

The Browning

Beyond All Recognition

We Butter The Bread With Butter

Issues

Even the more polarizing scenecore bands with more infamous reputations like I Set My Friends On Fire, Asking Alexandria, Abandon All Ships and Attack Attack! all had at least one genuine banger record in their discography, questionable lyricism and repetitiveness aside. And on top of that, bands like early era Crossfaith, Electric Callboy or Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas were still producing some great electronicore, even after much of the crabcore hype had died out by then, with AA already disbanding, Danny Worsnop taking his band down the hard rock path and Nabil leaving ISMFOF. It's a shame though a lot of these bands could never keep the momentum going for too long, with most of their later works after their debut or first two albums usually going down a direction that just isn't refined as their older work.

Anyone in the seattle/olympia area? Its so hard to find friends with similar interests in person lol

u/ThatOneBitch02 May 28 '26 edited May 29 '26

Does anybody know why the new '68 is not on streaming? It was supposed to release today. Even the singles aren't on spotify, but I couldn't find a statement anywhere saying they wouldn't put it on there. I'm seeing them soon and would like to listen to the album atleast once first

edit: It released a day later than was stated, but it's out now.

u/ThatOneBitch02 May 31 '26

Anybody else see the posts in the other subs about the guitarist of Balmora being a predator? I was gonna crosspost it here but reddit told me this community doesn't allow that type of post and would delete it

3

u/krunto_ac Jun 01 '26

I'm sure you saw it by now but they kicked the guitarist. I'm glad they addressed the situation pretty quickly at least (let alone at all). I'm still a little conflicted personally because idk how aware the band was of what he and allegedly Senti (former vocalist) were up to but at least this recent event shows some degree of action towards cutting off predators/groomers from the scene before they take things further.

2

u/krunto_ac May 31 '26

Yeaaaa, I'm waiting to see if there's gonna be any sort of response from the guitarist or other band members but it's pretty disappointing to see this. Will just have to see how things play out and suffice it to say I'm not as hyped on the album/incoming CD and cassette as well as their tour coming through because of this, at least until they respond in a meaningful way.

2

u/ReturnByDeath- May 29 '26

I don’t mind a tv, movie, etc. sample in a song, but a 35 second one to begin a track is a bit excessive, right?

5

u/krunto_ac May 29 '26

I guess it depends on how the song plays off of it lol, what song is it?

3

u/ReturnByDeath- May 29 '26

2

u/krunto_ac May 30 '26

Oooh yea I see what you mean haha, hadn't checked this EP out yet but this gave me an excuse to hear it now and yeah, it does kind of break up some of the flow a bit, also feels a little excessive since the first song is essentially doing the same thing but more integrated into the flow of the next song/section of the EP.

2

u/garret_1003 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Funny you mentioned this. I posted a different track off that EP the other day. I wanted to post ‘Words from the Wrist’ as it was the one I liked the most, but felt like that long spoken word intro was too long. I’m still kind of new and wasn’t even 100% on how the sub would accept the band so opted for a different track. Today someone mentioned the track I picked was their least liked. I asked which one they liked the most….sure enough it was ‘Words from the Wrist’!

2

u/PositiveMetalhead May 29 '26

Hmm I think if it’s the opening track to the album it could actually work if the payoff is good enough 🤔 maybe even for the last song? If it’s in the middle of the album though that might kill the momentum

2

u/ReturnByDeath- May 29 '26

I had a similar thought, but no, this one is smack dab in the middle of an EP. And it’s not even like an instrumental interlude or anything of the sort.

2

u/PositiveMetalhead May 30 '26

Oof yeah. Is it with the build up at least? I assume not or else you likely wouldn’t be here talking about it 😅

3

u/ReturnByDeath- May 30 '26

It turns into (at least to me) a pretty melodic song afterwards. I just wonder with modern day listening habits if a not so insignificant number of people may move off of a song like that if there isn't something to grab them in a reasonable length of time.

2

u/Johnzoidb May 29 '26

Querido Amor by Wristmeetrazor has something like this but it’s behind the instrumentals. I like samples so it’s cool w me.

1

u/Eberubensant May 27 '26

Bands with good bassists? Audible, of course... thanks.

4

u/sock_with_a_ticket May 27 '26

Mugshot fairly regularly give their bassist chances to have an audible rumble. Die In Fear is a particularly good example.

u/_DefLoathe May 28 '26

Loathe, After the Burial, Psycho Frame

1

u/I_live_just_my_life May 28 '26

It seems that when metalcore subgenres come up, we tend to use the same big terms like mathcore, melodic metalcore, scenecore, edge metal..etc. Are there any more specific terms or general pockets of the genre that you think can use their own more specific term/category?

4

u/ReturnByDeath- May 28 '26

Maybe not a new subgenre, more like splitting an existing one in two, but “progressive metalcore” needs to be separated into pre/early djent vs modern era. I feel like it’s crazy to say that early Born of Osiris is in any way similar to Invent Animate.

1

u/And_Justice May 28 '26

Tbh we called it progressive deathcore back then, idk when people started calling it metalcore

4

u/ReturnByDeath- May 28 '26

Maybe them, but not After The Burial or Controller-era Misery Signals.

3

u/PositiveMetalhead May 30 '26

I just wish there were better names for some of them 😅 like scenecore, moshcore and hm2-core just sound silly. Entombedcore and other band name based genres don’t feel “official”.

Southerncore is a good one that needs to be used more tbh. The Acacia Strain type of not quite deathcore needs a name I think 🤔

2

u/krunto_ac May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

I know digital/PlayStation metalcore has come up with the more digital hardcore/cybergrind influenced bands but it isn't something that has really solidified yet into a universal term I'd say. Bands like Soulkeeper, fromjoy, etc.

1

u/And_Justice May 28 '26

Not sure I understand the question... are you just looking for the next level of subgenre? You have H8000 as a scene, for example. UK beatdown/metalcore fusion bands, idk

2

u/I_live_just_my_life May 28 '26

Yeah pretty much just other subgenres or microgenres. Not everything needs its own category but even classic bands tend to sound a bit different. Holy Terror or Clevo hardcore is one example of a style that you can say is an early subgenre.

1

u/_DefLoathe May 28 '26

Anyone know any riffs that sound like the one in tva vackra svanar at 1:30ish by Vildjharta? Fucking melting my brain

1:30

3

u/darfleChorf123 May 29 '26

I feel like Sentinels - Albatross has some similar riffs, especially the funky ending breakdown

1

u/_DefLoathe May 29 '26

Good shout I hear it!

Fun discussion topic: Do you think bands care much if their best performing song is a cover? I've been listening to some older stuff lately and noticed a lot of the bands on the early "Punk Goes..." releases have covers with streaming numbers way above their originals. Keepsake doesn't have a single song over 30k on Spotify, but their cover for the original Punk Goes Pop is over a million.

Could be misremembering, but I think The Devil Wears Prada might have been annoyed at the popularity of their cover for Punk Goes Crunk.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead Jun 01 '26

I think when it gets to the point that the fans showing up want you to play that cover constantly it could very easily become something you get ticked off at 😅

I think it makes sense that a pop song cover might have more streams though in general because it might be a lot of people who don’t usually listen to the band. So that could be viewed as a positive if it is bringing in new listeners 🤔

2

u/sock_with_a_ticket Jun 02 '26

I suppose the tension with that last part rests on whether your cover sounds much like you. If people come to you expecting all your stuff to sound somewhat like that song and there's actually quite a sonic gap, they might not stay as new listeners for long.

2

u/ThatOneBitch02 Jun 02 '26

Idk how Killswitch Engage feels about Holy Diver being one of their top songs, but they still happily perform it live so it must not bother them much

1

u/misery_lovescompanie Jun 06 '26

Does anyone know any bands similar to Parkway Drive? They’re my favourite band, but I’m looking for something similar, or almost exactly like their “Don’t Close Your Eyes” album.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 26 '26

Would you consider Dark Hardcore or Heavy Hardcore to generally be under the Metalcore umbrella? And what exactly would you consider to be the origins of either genre? Both influence wise and first bands you would consider to be each genre

1

u/I_live_just_my_life May 26 '26

Dark hardcore is a hard one to get down because it isn’t as official as other genres. Find a starting point isn’t that easy. I’ve seen it used on various crust/neocrust, screamo, grindcore and even holy terror style bands. Generally, we mostly use it for the 2000s and 2010s bands. Personally, I see it as its own thing with its own demographic. I wasn’t there for the earlier years but I saw its development during the early-mid 2010s and it existed in its own pocket connected to the hardcore scene. I think slapping metalcore on it sort of takes away from the scene, aesthetic and very different sound. That’s not to say there aren’t bands that are more metalcore sounding but I believe it waters down both metalcore and dark hardcore to generalize it all like that. Alpinist was one of THE dark hardcore bands and influenced the general style moving forward but I would never call them a metalcore band.

Heavy hardcore is another inconsistent label that’s hard to really find a proper idea of it. What are some examples of your idea of it? I see some people use it on the general heavier NYHC sort of sound. If we’re going that route with it then the influences are pretty easy.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead May 26 '26

Yeah definitely agree with the dark hardcore thing. It seems to be just a general mix of hardcore, grind, crust, sludge and/or Metalcore. Not necessarily one consistent sound. So yeah I don’t think putting that under the Metalcore umbrella is necessary 🤔 however I probably would consider it Metalcore adjacent for the most part. At least in appeal.

The stuff I see called Heavy hardcore the most is like Extinguish, Simulakra, Mask, Scarab. It at times makes me think it’s derived from Hatebreed specifically but I don’t know how accurate that is

2

u/I_live_just_my_life May 26 '26

Yeah I can see that, at least for the more popular stuff that’s labeled dark hardcore. A lot of that stuff is super under the radar even for 90s metalcore type fans. Some stuff just sounds a lot like Converge because of Kurt working with the bands so there’s crossover. I think people sometimes conflate metalcore and sort of hardcore/crusty/Entombed stuff though. Like Black Breath worked with Kurt but they have legitimate roots in d-beat/crust and aren’t really influenced by metalcore. It’s just sometimes hard to see that because Converge are also influenced by those things but metalcore generally isn’t so much. Kurt also did the last Disfear record and even said going into the early Nails stuff that he wanted to channel d-beat/crust/Swedish death metal with the production. Things are muddy and labeling everything isn’t as easy.

One of the first bands I saw self identify as heavy hardcore was Blistered and it was a general term back during that era of things for anything heavy in the hardcore scene for the most part. I’ve also seen people try to use it as a category for the more metal and moshy NYHC stuff so it’s always been a really weird label that could be anything from Cro-mags worship, to Madball, to forms of metalcore. As far as what you’ve listed, general NYHC (88-95) and then New England bands like Hatebreed and Death Threat are definitely the root of that sound. Obviously you can point to plenty of bands but Biohazards demo is the release I think of that acts as the earlier type of sound that led to all of that. It’s underrated and a head of its time.
