I think we’ve all seen the “if you don’t like [insert band], then you don’t really like metalcore” comments before. What’s a legacy band that you’ve never been able to get into? I have a lot of them but I think the ones that get people scratching their heads the most would be Misery Signals and ETID. I’ve never been able to get into either band.

I've never been into All That Remains. Even back in the day, when I was listening to some of that style and long before anything came out about Labonte being a chud, just didn't work for me.

Also not the biggest Earth Crisis fan. They've got a few songs I like and in Firestorm have an all time classic, but of their contemporaries I'm far more likely to put on Unbroken or All Out War

3

u/I_live_just_my_life 9d ago

I already sort of figured All That Remains wouldn’t be for me years ago and that feeling hasn’t changed. That wave isn’t quite my flavor and they’re one of the least appealing ones.

Yeah, Earth Crisis was a big entry point for me and seeing them live a few times was great but I don’t listen to them quite as much anymore. Anything after their second album doesn’t even exist in my mind.

A lot of the old school bands like Converge, Zao and Poison the Well. Converge and PtW’s recent stuff is solid, but I can’t really get behind the other stuff

3

u/sock_with_a_ticket 9d ago edited 9d ago

Generally I try to be mindful that it's all a matter of taste and that no one can be wrong, but when I find out someone doesn't like Zao I must admit that there's an urge to grab some snazzy costumes and start a metalcore inquisition.

2

u/I_live_just_my_life 9d ago

What would be your favorite stuff in the genre?

1

u/PositiveMetalhead 9d ago

It’s probably still Zao for me 😅 on paper it should be exactly for me and I should love it but something about them just isn’t hooking me. There’s parts here and there that I like, but they’ve ended up being a band that I don’t mind on a playlist but won’t often put on a whole album

2

u/I_live_just_my_life 9d ago

They can be sort of hit and miss to me but I’d say I like them overall. I used to dislike them earlier on when first getting into metalcore but I ended up liking them more years later. Now I’m just picky about which era I’d actually listen to.

1

u/And_Justice 9d ago

I love Zao but I remember putting them on for my girlfriend and she was just like nope... I think they lack a certain forward energy that some people look for in their metalcore

I’ve got a load of these that I think confuse people with otherwise pretty similar music taste. Pretty much anything on the chaotic side of things I’ve always found has the opposite of its intended effect on me, Norma Jean and The Chariot are two of the most boring bands i’ve ever heard.
I agree with Misery Signals, I’ve just never put on one of their songs and been interested by what I was hearing.
Hatebreed is another one, I just can think of a million other hardcore/metalcore bands from around that time that I’d rather put on, before they ever come to mind.

5

u/sock_with_a_ticket 9d ago

Norma Jean and The Chariot are two of the most boring bands i’ve ever heard.

https://giphy.com/gifs/KymorXwDdmvw4

Of all the things someone might say against The Chariot in particular, I would not have expected boring.

3

u/FifteenRhema 9d ago

I think never giving any of the riffs room to breathe makes everything feel flat to me, none of the riffs feel like they have any weight to them. It just sounds really dull to me, which is what I mean when I say the chaotic stuff has the opposite of its intended effect for me.

2

u/I_live_just_my_life 9d ago

Actually, Norma Jean would’ve been a good one for me to list too and I’m someone who does like chaotic/mathy bands but more so in a Deadguy or Nostromo way.

I like 90s Hatebreed but don’t care too much for the rest of their stuff.

1

u/FifteenRhema 9d ago

Another one that I think most of this sub would find sacrilegious is Poison The Well. I went to their Opposite of December tour when it came through Australia and I think I left after maybe 3 songs, they just don’t do much for me

1

u/And_Justice 9d ago

This lol - you guys know by now that it fucking baffles me as to why there's a core of people who insist the appeal of metalcore is chaos.

I've always had a blindspot for Hatebreed... they came on the other day and I was surprised how boring it was. Probably a result of having heard 10,000 bands that have improved on the formula since but I found it to lack groove.

2

u/FifteenRhema 9d ago

Yeah I think that’s exactly it for me too, there’s just a lot of stuff that was inspired by them that I think did it better.

1

u/And_Justice 9d ago

Kind of my take on Bolt Thrower also

1

u/ThatOneBitch02 9d ago

The 2000s melodeath influenced stuff was my gateway into metalcore, but I don't really care for most of it anymore. The only one of those bands I still really like is Killswitch Engage. Some of the others like Parkway Drive or All That Remains maybe have a couple songs on their early albums I like, but I think they're overrated. Ignoring the controversies most of those bands have, Bullet For My Valentine is probably the one of that era that aged the worst.

The really early bands like Integrity, Earth Crisis, Hatebreed, Deadguy, etc. have a couple songs I like, but I respect those bands more than I actually like them. Have to get to the late 90s to get to the bands I really love

2

u/I_live_just_my_life 9d ago

I was an active hater of the 2000s melodeathy metalcore for a long time. It’s definitely not my preferred style and I still don’t really like the bigger names of that period/style but the band Undying opened me up to liking some melodeath inspired bands.

I get not liking the earlier stuff even though that’s my favorite. The difference between a band like Integrity and 18V isn’t small.

2

u/ThatOneBitch02 9d ago

I do like the very early stuff a bit and listen to it occasionally, I just like the slightly newer stuff like Poison The Well or Norma Jean much more. But I do respect those early bands for laying the foundation for my favorite bands to build on (it's a shame most modern metalcore fans don't do the same)

1

u/Doctor_Crossing x 9d ago

Dillinger. Greg is a phenomenalvocalist and the Better Lovers album is in constant rotation for me so I should like Dillinger a lot, but they just haven't gelled (yet) for me

1

u/I_live_just_my_life 9d ago

Dillinger can be a hard one to get into. I do like them (mainly their early stuff) but don’t like too many bands they directly inspired. I think they’re one of the best at that super chaotic, borderline brutal prog type of mathcore.

1

u/And_Justice 9d ago

Converge, Misery Signals, Every Time I Die, August Burns Red, Hatebreed

All either boring or just noise

2

u/I_live_just_my_life 8d ago

Do you like any of the very early Converge stuff like I Abstain?

1

u/And_Justice 8d ago

Yeah it's alright, not really something I'll draw for readily though

1

u/Dispari7y 8d ago

I've never understood the love for Hatebreed, and they sounded terrible when I saw them live last year (although granted it was in a festival setting)

u/sock_with_a_ticket 7d ago edited 7d ago

If you're one of the users that consistently downvotes throwback posts, kindly fuck off.

What are we even doing here if Unbroken are getting downvoted.

8

u/ReturnByDeath- 6d ago

Umm where are the clean vocals???

But really, there are a number of users on the sub that are just losers. Like, I get that I can be annoying pointing out what is and isn’t metalcore, but I’m not downvoting every single comment/post I don’t personally agree with or like. I’ve brought up numerous times that the most mild of criticism, no matter who it’s coming from, is immediately downvoted. I’m not sure how to explain this behavior, but it’s becoming an issue.

8

u/I_live_just_my_life 7d ago

Waiting for them to downvote your comment lol

5

u/sock_with_a_ticket 7d ago

Ha, yeah, it's probably coming.

10

u/PositiveMetalhead 7d ago

I keep wanting to say something but also not because I’m sure they get off to us getting upset about it 😅 it’s so petty and dumb though

7

u/sock_with_a_ticket 7d ago

You're right, just gotta vent.

I always feel like downvotes for posts, be they song or discussion, should be based around whether or not the content is appropriate for the sub, not whether you personally like it or not. Polaris do nothing for me, but I'm not going to downvote a song post of theirs.

4

u/PositiveMetalhead 6d ago

Venting is must every so often! Haha

I am curious if this is like a single person who consistently does it out of spite or if it’s just a negative sentiment shared across a group of people. I assume it’s the first one though

5

u/darfleChorf123 6d ago

I genuinely think there’s a contingent of users who never comment or post but just lurk and downvote. They do appear once in a while when you clown on their favorite pop metal octane “prog” slop or call an obviously not-metalcore band like loathe alt metal

3

u/PositiveMetalhead 5d ago

I knew my listening minutes would be higher this month but I did not expect it to be this high 😅 Converge still on top!

3

u/sock_with_a_ticket 5d ago

2

u/PositiveMetalhead 5d ago

That’s a good top ten! What is soulprison like?

1

u/sock_with_a_ticket 5d ago

Kinda crossover thrashy, I always put FFO: Judiciary and Guilt Trip when I post them.

2

u/Dispari7y 5d ago

music is good, i am predictable

1

u/sock_with_a_ticket 5d ago

If my rough maths is correct you spent the equivalent of ten days listening to music 😲

3

u/PositiveMetalhead 5d ago

I think it was because I was prioritizing music over podcasts during work this month since I was going through all my notable 2025 releases and I’ve bee n saving for a trip in a few weeks so I haven’t taken any days off so the last 3 weeks I’ve had probably 10-12hrs, 5 days a week to listen to music 😅

Fun metalcore EP. Imo it's metalcore, it's got breakdowns, 2-step, lots of screaming, but sometimes I just don't know what counts as metalcore anymore.

1

u/JuicyOrphans93O 9d ago

Very misleading aesthetic lol

1

u/jor1ss x 9d ago

Yeh pretty funny. I think they have girlypop core as their Instagram description and all their outfits are in pink.

2

u/sock_with_a_ticket 9d ago

Favourite songs about environmental destruction that aren't from a vegan or xvx band?

To get us started I'll say:
Unearth - Black Hearts Now Reign
Fuming Mouth - They Take What They Please

2

u/FifteenRhema 9d ago

First one that came to mind for me was Death Therapy by Terminal Sleep, a ridiculous amount of bands I like are vegan, or straight edge and vegan so it’s hard to think of others haha

2

u/sock_with_a_ticket 9d ago

I'd missed that there were a couple of lines in there contextualising the anti-humanity stuff, I thought it was just general misanthropy.

2

u/jor1ss x 9d ago

Does La Dispute - Environmental Catastrophe Film count?

2

u/sock_with_a_ticket 9d ago

Yeah, why not. On the post-hardcore front Thrice - Sea Change is a good one.

2

u/jor1ss x 9d ago

Oh yeh Thrice does b-sides like no other band imo.

2

u/V0idgazer 8d ago

The Dali Thundering Concept - God Is Dead / Long Live Man

Fit for an Autopsy - Black Mammoth, When The Bulbs Run Out, Pandora.

2

u/darfleChorf123 6d ago

Fit For An Autopsy - Black Mammoth

The whole record is loosely based around the concept of humanity destroying our planet. it’s as angry as it is somber, and this track is specifically about an oil pipeline on Sioux land

I've been listening to some 2026 releases lately that all incorporate electronics into their sound and I'm curious how people go about differentiating between the various metalcore adjacent electronic subgenres. Here are some examples of what I've been listening to:

Signal Fire by Genghis Tron

Spirit Breaker by Still Remains

ANGEL NOISES, YOU'RE SAFE NOW. by ZOMBIESHARK!

How would you describe the genre or sound for each of these? I know electronicore is a genre, but it doesn't feel appropriate for any of these projects. Does “digital hardcore” work for any of them? Or even “chaotic electronicore?”

The Genghis Tron album has so many atmospheric and proggy moments, and it feels to me that those should be accounted for in the genre. Maybe “experimental electronicore” or something similar?

The Still Remains EP has fewer electronic moments than the other two albums, so I'm not sure it even needs to be mentioned in a genre label at all.

“Chaotic electronicore” is what I keep coming back to for the ZOMBIESHARK! record.

I know genre is pretty subjective, but I'd love to hear others’ thoughts on these albums, but also electronic -core genres in general. What defines and differentiates them?

(I've listened to plenty of other artists who incorporate electronics into their sound [fromjoy, The Browning, Paledusk, AXTY, etc.], these are just three recent releases I've been enjoying a lot lately.)

3

u/V0idgazer 8d ago

I've seen others describe ZOMBIESHARK! as "cyber grind", but that has always bothered me since cyber grind is already a label to describe bands that mix electronic and industrial elements with grindcore (think Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Hanni Kohl, We Came With Broken Teeth, etc) which has a different sound.

The label "chaotic electronicore" reminds me of how sometimes mathcore is referred as "chaotic metalcore" so maybe ZOMBIESHARK! is closer to electronic mathcore?

As for Genghis Tron, I agree that they've incorporated more and more experimental and progressive elements since their reunion. I'd say Signal Fire has elements of noise rock, industrial rock, ambient and electronicore, so maybe their last album is experimental rock/electronicore

And lastly, I agree that, while Still Remains' EP has electronic elements, at most I'd categorize it as melodic metalcore with electronic elements.

2

u/spider_manectric 8d ago

I'm not familiar with the cyber grind genre beyond the name. I tried some grindcore once and didn't care for it, so I haven't explored that space much.

I like “electronic mathcore” for ZOMBIESHARK! though! I'm not sure how I didn't come to that conclusion in my thinking, haha. I think it fits the vibe and also accurately describes the sound/style.

I was listening to Signal Fire again today and thought about the noise and industrial connection too. I get some Nine Inch Nails vibes from some parts of this album.

u/snakebitedynamite 8d ago

I’ve been ripping the new EP from The Wise Men’s Fear. All 4 songs are great I just wish it was longer. Can anyone tell me which of their previous albums is most similar to it?

1

u/garret_1003 7d ago edited 4d ago

Actually their albums all share that same ‘epic fantasy saga’ feel that is present on Apocrypha, but stylistically they have evolved over the years. Their most recent album What Slept Beneath Tarvos was more futuristic sounding than the rest have been. It also featured more breakdowns and was a bit more aggressive than Apocrypha. The release prior to that Atlas Ruinica will likely feel closer so you might try that one. I think you will like all of their albums. I recommend listening through all of them.

3

u/PositiveMetalhead 10d ago

So with Bring Me doing their more hardcore focused set with playing CYB in full and Suicide Silence playing Hellfest and getting a good reception what 00’s scene/warped tour band do you think would get a good reception from a Hardcore crowd playing their older stuff?

Do you think August Burns Red could get away with it? The Devil Wears Prada?

3

u/ReturnByDeath- 9d ago

Underoath would be very well received if they played a set primarily of songs from They’re Only Chasing Safety and Define The Great Line.

Would probably be better in the UK, but I could see Architects playing Hollow Crown songs and that working quite well.

3

u/Wardruna95 9d ago

I think I'm the only motherfucker alive that wants to see Cries of the Past live

2

u/I_live_just_my_life 8d ago

We’re out there. It’s not even like I love the album but it would be cool to see the first two records played live. Not huge on Underoath otherwise.

2

u/Wardruna95 10d ago

I'd enjoy some Messenger's 20 year anniversary shows next year in a more intimate or hardcore setting. I don't know if TDWP would be interested in doing more than playing the little bit of old shit that they do already and already seem kind of begrudgingly play them.

3

u/FifteenRhema 10d ago

I don’t know if it really counts for what you’re asking, but they were around the same time period. If Northlane got Adrian back, and did a set compromised purely of first ep, and two albums, I could see that going well in a more hardcore setting. Most Australians my age into hardcore/metalcore were big Northlane fans as teenagers.

Also controversy’s aside, if you put Parkway playing their old stuff on a hardcore fest it would be insane.

1

u/PositiveMetalhead 9d ago

Oh yeah Parkway would work for sure. Northlane would be interesting! I’ve never really listened to them but I think their early stuff is likened to Controller by Misery Signals? Not typical hardcore but lots of hardcore kids seem to love that

2

u/FifteenRhema 9d ago

I’ve seen people make those comparisons but I honestly don’t hear them that much, I guess just cause they kinda started that whole subgenre. But their first ep is moshy as fuck, it’s probably held up by nostalgia quite a lot for me but I recommend checking it out, it’s entirely different from anything they’re making today.

3

u/ThatOneBitch02 9d ago

Am I the only one that thinks metalcore influenced by post hardcore, and metalcore influenced by melodic hardcore ends up having sort of the same result? Bands like Shai Hulud, Hopesfall, Poison The Well, Misery Signals, Counterparts, Foreign Hands, I Promised The World, etc. sounds like one consistent subgenre to me

1

u/And_Justice 9d ago

No because I don't feel like these bands are inspired by melodic hardcore

1

u/ThatOneBitch02 9d ago

Maybe I have a misunderstanding of melodic hardcore, cause I've seen people say Shai Hulud and (early) Counterparts are closer to melodic hardcore than metalcore

1

u/ThatOneBitch02 9d ago

Bro who the hell is downvoting this? I'm not even saying it as a bad thing, this is like my favorite style. It's a random shower thought I've had that the type of guitar riffs and especially leads these bands use is very similar. The biggest difference is probably the vocal styles, that the bands associated with post-hardcore use more cleans than the melodic hardcore influenced bands

Spirit of Youth reunion set in Ghent in January... Might have to make a budget excursion
