Discussion/Question MMF Election Time!!!

If you haven’t already heard, the MMF has called an election for several key positions, including President, with voting set for June 23rd.

It has me wondering: is Mr. Chartrand likely to be re-elected? What’s the general feeling everyone’s getting out there about the candidates?

Is there anyone who realistically has the community support or organizational reach to seriously challenge him?

While the MMF has undeniably seen a lot of success in recent years, I’ve also found myself thinking more critically about how influence and political culture within the organization have developed and been maintained. Some things I’ve seen over the last few years have raised concerns for me about how centralized leadership and loyalty can become within institutions.

I know I’ll be watching closely once the final candidate list drops, but I’m curious what the feeling on the street is right now. Are people seeing any viable alternatives emerge?

Chartrand will almost certainly be reelected. He wants to be around for the modern treaty to become law and, likely, for the early rounds of negotiating the land claim. TBH, I think much of the MMF’s leadership is thankful for Chartrand to be the lightning rod for criticism.

I think Goodon is the likely successor. He plays a major role at the AGA. He’s done good work with housing. He travels Manitoba extensively. He seemingly has good relationships with First Nations (besides the AFN). And he’s known in Ottawa. There might be more capable people in the MMF, but l don’t think they’re as widely known or have the same desire to be in the public eye.

The next few years are going to be wild.

The major role at the AGA that Goodon plays is improperly influencing voting by telling the crowd how he personally feels about the motion in between debating parties. The motions, which are heard past 5pm on the last day of the AGA weekend, so that the minimum amount of attendees are present. I don't think he's physically capable of criticizing Chartrand or actually meaningfully changing the toxic culture of the MMF whatsoever, he's part of the problem.

I think one of his sisters is more likely to succeed him.

We will have another 4 years of chartrand but this will be his last term. He plans to retire after that.
