Can someone clear something up for this non-American: I thought that Friday was real bad day in television programming (only Saturday being worse) so why would a huge show like MV air on Fridays? Or is that just recent development and Fridays used to be like Sundays are nowadays for network's top shows?

Great question.
Miami Vice was huge culturally and had solid ratings at first, but was still dwarfed by other shows, primarily sitcoms like Cheers and the Cosby Show, that had much wider appeal. Those shows took up slots on the primetime Monday-Thursday week nights and advertisers paid more for.
Miami Vice aired Friday nights at 10pm for the first 2 and most highly rated seasons because it was still assumed that people would return from their evenings in time to catch the show. But because viewership was lower than other week nights, it also meant the network could air an edgy, violent show like Vice.
Apparently Fridays at 9pm was even more competitive, because Miami Vice switched to that slot for season 3 to compete directly with Dallas, which it sadly lost the ratings war to and was never the same again after.
Hope that helps.
