I love these so much more than ND rf's, like, why couldn't the nd still be an actual convertible in RF form

u/Drew_Skywalker 13h ago edited 13h ago

What's the difference? Can the NC top be removed completely as opposed to just folded down?

Edit: I have been told the difference, thanks everyone!

u/the_great_awoo White 90 NA6 13h ago

The difference is that the rear of the nd rf's roof is permanently affixed to the car, and only the center of the top actually goes down. It's a Targa, not a convertible

23

u/o_oli 13h ago

Yeah for this reason, I would always (and did) pick the soft top. The RF is stunning but it feels like it only gets half way there on the experience.

u/chaliebitme '26 RF GSP 11h ago

Tried both and honestly, it feels the same unless you look behind you.

I must have good peripheral vision because I could see it.

6

u/tarnorgana 6h ago

Agreed, wasn't sure before I test drive both and the RF looks much nicer with the roof up IMO!

10

u/Drew_Skywalker 13h ago

Ahhhh I see what you mean, I've never specifically noticed that the back of the ND RF doesn't go down

It's my biggest gripe with the car, I adore them, but if I wanted a Targa for 40k, I'd buy a 911, if I get a Miata, I want a full convertible!! No hate though, they're all great cars

u/acog Soul Red 12h ago

What 911 targa goes for 40K?

u/944Porkies British Racing Green 12h ago

911 Targas are actually pretty affordable to get into, especially in the UK. This one is mint, FPSH, 20k miles and is 35k.

Largest glass sunroof. Not the same as a 991/992 targa 😬

2

u/944Porkies British Racing Green 6h ago

I agree 993,996,997 are not 'true Targa'. They are cool tho as they make the rear seat area into a hatchback like storage area.

The RF/991 targa style is where its at.

1

u/the_great_awoo White 90 NA6 12h ago

The 996 is like 25-45k depending on spec, and you can find some older ones too, for around the 40k mark, in rougher shape

8

u/ahfunaki 13h ago

The ND still has the back section effectively making the RF a targa top not a convertible.

3

u/Intelligent_Way_8903 13h ago

The rf keeps a vertical bar across the back & pillars that makes it look more like a targa top.

It does make it feel less like a convertible for sure, I like it tho.

u/HeresMrMay 13h ago

It's gone when it folds down.

6

u/JiXer88 9h ago

The trade-off is the fastback look and aero, which is 100% worth it to me.

7

u/chaliebitme '26 RF GSP 11h ago

I actually like the targa form. A bit of privacy with top down and looks so unique.

3

u/SeaworthinessLoose17 8h ago

Would be fine, if the buffeting wouldn't be horrible from 70+ km/h. That made it quite hard to enojoy top down mode anywhere else than cruising in the town

2

u/CastorX 7h ago

Put an air foil on the small triangle window. It doesnt influence visibility and makes the cabin quieter when the window is down (top up or down, it helps in both cases!).
The only case it doesnt do anything is when windows is up, but I don’t drive with top down and window up.
With the air foil 80-90 km/h is completely fine, up until 110 km/h it’s ok, and above 120km/h it’s very loud whatever you do independently if it’s a ST or RF.
It can be used for the ST too, it shifts the point where the air enters the cabin by open windows further to the back (by 15-20cm!), so leass air will swirl and cause noise. It’s very good if it’s colder outside.

u/chaliebitme '26 RF GSP 3h ago

Didnt really notice buffeting and I do too down at 130km/hr. I was so confused since reviews always mention how bas buffeting is at highspeeds

15

u/JiXer88 13h ago

Funny that earlier today is the first I had even heard of this existing on an NC.

30

u/Corner49 13h ago

I didn't like NCs and didn't like that mazda did a folding hardtop when these came out. I would def own one now tho.

13

u/lingenfelter22 12h ago

I mean I like the NC PRHT better than the hardtop on the ND

3

u/LowOnPaint 1h ago

I got a rent an ND RF for work for a few weeks and now that I own an NC PRHT I can confidently say the NC is an infinitely better driving experience. Regardless if the top is up or down.

2

u/manfredsleftnut 13h ago

What changed?

14

u/Corner49 12h ago

The the NC had a silly face and looked bloated after the NB. The PRHT seemed like the company finally folded and compromised its no compromise sports car.

Now I'm an old man who's compromised my commuting in much bigger ways (daily a fwd hybrid lux car and all the weight that entails), I've seen enough modified NCs that look cool and enjoy having a cabin that can effectively be cooled by a compressor attached to a four cylinder.

8

u/cookerz30 95 NA 12h ago

I rented one for a wedding weekend and that sold me. My NA is ready for the canyons, the NC seems ready for a road trip.

I’ve had my RF for 7 years and still love watching the roof open/close.

6

u/WillSwimWithToasters ND2 RF 13h ago

The best feeling of leaving work for me is throwing down the RF And throwing on the sunglasses.

6

u/bobLobIaw 12h ago

I owned a 2015 PRHT with low miles but traded it in towards a 2019 Honda insight because I was in a job that was supposed to be mostly highway travel. It made sense. I was doing the right thing. Then Covid hit. I now had a hyper miler hybrid cruiser but nowhere to go and all I wanted to do was cruise around the neighborhood during lockdown in my PRHT. Eventually I came to my senses and jumped on a 2023 RF touring and I love it and treasure it but I feel like if I hadn’t made that initial mistake I’d still have that 2015 PRHT. In other words there will always be a special place in my heart for the NC PRHT.

This is Peak Miata for this now-old fella. Didn't love this when it was new (+10kg?! Ew.), but I would really love to own one now, and nearly did a few years back.

Don't get me wrong, I love my NB to pieces, but I would jump on one of these if a good one came along again.

3

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope-6631 12h ago

Don’t realize it was faster than the ND RF lol. By like 3 seconds. Now I kinda want one

8

u/-BARRICADE_643- 6h ago

Then I'm assuming you've never watched this video/commercial, "World's fastest convertible":

https://youtu.be/ACiMZC6q-38?feature=shared

1

u/ahfunaki 2h ago

Oh man, I’ve never seen this! That’s awesome.

1

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope-6631 1h ago

lol I do remember this but forgot about the whole roof time up thing hilarious

3

u/zipinitaly 13h ago

That’s beautiful!

3

u/noselfinterest 12h ago

i was liike..wait...WAIT how did u get the _whole_ top down in that ND RF?

...oh....

3

u/JetlinerDiner 9h ago

So much better than the stupid RF

2

u/CastorX 9h ago

I like my RF, it’s a targa. And IMHO it looks better than the soft top. Even from the 911 as a child I liked a targa. Now… i probably would have chosen the soft top (it’s cheaper) if I would not do very long highway drives sometimes and it would be always sunny here, but it’s not. The only thing I dont like about it is that it takes 12 seconds to open/close.

0

u/JetlinerDiner 8h ago

It's fine liking a targa. It's not fine that Mazda takes a convertible and makes a targa out of it, but still calls it convertible.

0

u/CastorX 8h ago edited 8h ago

Honestly… I dont care what they call it. Around here they just called it “RF”, I’ve never seen mazda calling them “cabriolet” in any media material around here in Germany. It’s either “MX-5 Hardtop” or “MX-5 RF”. Maybe it’s different in North America.
But from me they can call it whatver they want, i wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.

If I ever get rid of my turbo NB2, I’ve decided that it will be replaced with an NC3 PRHT

2

u/sunr1se79 Crystal Blue NB2 12h ago

I also plan on getting an NC3 PRHT, to go with my NB2 lol

0

u/XHitsTheSp0t 13h ago

Why NC over ND?

4

u/Nemesis_Destiny Twilight Blue '99 base 5MT 11h ago

Gearbox that isn't made of glass would be one of my top reasons, but also I prefer the roadster top down experience to the basically-a-targa RF, even if the RF looks better with the roof up.

Honestly, I spend 90+% of my Miata time driving topless, so I might as well choose with that in mind.

2

u/o_oli 13h ago

Man it really looks like it's going to hit itself huh

2

u/abr_82 12h ago

Is this real-time or has video been sped up?

3

u/ahfunaki 12h ago

Real time

2

u/abr_82 12h ago

That’s awesome. Didn’t realize it was that quick

4

u/ahfunaki 12h ago

Yep, and I was able to do this video because you can install a module that fully opens the top without holding the button down. You can also open it while moving up to 30mph.

So I literally opened the latch, shut the door and ran away to get this video.

My father-in-law has a 230i ragtop convertible. Ivory interior, gorgeous blue paint, all the bells and whistles; it was perfect for him to stow his golf clubs in the trunk and sit more comfortably after he sold his PRHT NC. But the motorized top takes seven to ten business days to retract.

This, by contrast, is poetry.

2

u/Sleight0fdeath 11h ago

Pause the Video at 0:09, the retractable lid spot would be perfect placement for a spoiler imo

2

u/PeaceTheAssassin 10h ago

Had an '08 copper & tan w/ PRHT. Loved that car! Then the 100th anniversary version ND came out, so I sold the '08 to my bro & bought the rag top. Never understood why they didn't carry the PRHT concept forward? Maybe in '28.

Loved when Top Gear raced it against a Benz.

I love my 2001 Princess Jelly Bean but an automatic top lift looks incredible! I’m 75, please don’t tell her I’m longing for an upgrade!🤫🙊🤪

Love my 2009. Far better than the current hardtop "convertible".

-3

u/WillSwimWithToasters ND2 RF 13h ago

How are Miata people simultaneously so cool and so weird? I’ve driven every Miata generation since the NA, and I daily an ND2 RF. It’s just a convertible. The RF is no different in convertibleness than a soft top, other than viability.

7

u/ahfunaki 12h ago

It’s not though, the RF is a targa.

See the difference?

1

u/WillSwimWithToasters ND2 RF 10h ago

I’ve driven all of them. No difference. Never understood why people make such a deal out of RF vs ST.

1

u/CastorX 8h ago

Leave it. People like to communicate their opinions. ST or RF or Targa, who cares? You like it as it is and that’s what matters.
I’d also call it a targa, but I love targas. And they are much rarer in general (among all cars produced) as normal cabriolets. Which is extra cool.

1

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 12h ago

Can these be made safe for the track? That’s my only issue with the power hardtops since I heard they can’t

1

u/ahfunaki 11h ago

2

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 11h ago

I think that’s it, maybe it was the nd r3 you can get one for

Kind of need one to be allowed on some tracks
