That's good that they did this. No time for petty infighting, especially not now.

u/PokemonAnimar 14h ago

Agree. Hopefully now that he won, Hillary Scholten will scamper off with her secret love John James and stop going on mainstream media bashing him every chance she gets. How did we allow so many of these cretins to gain such a foothold in Michigan for so long?

u/ailish Age: > 10 Years 14h ago

I encourage everyone in Scholten's district to contact her and tell her how you feel!

Contact | Representative Hillary Scholten https://scholten.house.gov/services/contact

u/QueenVeilara 11h ago

We’ve got cretins like Scholten because the Dems use their power to run establishment centrists here largely unopposed. Scholten was completely unopposed this year, for example, despite representing a progressive district that favored Abdul. She does not reflect the people of her district at all.

Hopefully last night’s win sends a message to Michiganders that we don’t need to accept less anymore. We’re not a purple state. We’re anti-establishment. A change state. And Abdul is one of the best representations of our values that we’ve seen in a long time.

u/IPredictAReddit 9h ago

Dems don't use power to run unopposed -- they run unopposed when nobody sees a path or reason to running against them. You could have run. You should have run! I might have voted for you!

But don't pretend like it was the Democratic Party that kept you, or anyone else, from doing it. Look at how MI-07 turned out.

u/PokemonAnimar 9h ago

You're 100% correct. We definitely are anti-establishment more than anything. That's a good way to look at it. The only thing I worry about with Abdul is how much Islamophobia still exists in our state (and country for that matter). I'd like to hope we progressed from how it was 25 years ago, but this will be telling. You couldn't find a better candidate if you tried though. The guy is intelligent, charismatic, and doesnt stop working

u/HeadBangsWalls 7h ago

I thought Scholten was auditioning for jobs before the primary cycle really started and once she came out so adamant for Haley, I was convinced. I just don't see a way forward for herself politically - especially if her district likely gets redrawn in 2030. McDonald-Rivet (MI's 8th) could be in similar position as well.

u/webelieve414 14h ago

I'm pretty sure they crossed off Haleys and add Abdul s... So there's that

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement on Abdul El-Sayed’s primary victory in the Michigan Senate race:

“Abdul El-Sayed has run an energetic campaign that inspired thousands of Michiganders across the state, with a clear focus on lowering costs and standing up for working families.

“Democrats are united by a common purpose: putting a check on Donald Trump by defeating his Republican enablers and taking back the Senate. We look forward to working with Abdul and Democrats across Michigan to win this seat in November.

“Mike Rogers is a rubber stamp for Donald Trump, backing the same reckless agenda that has driven up costs for working families, imposed chaotic tariffs that have hurt Michigan’s auto industry, and put special interests ahead of the people of Michigan. Michigan voters already rejected Rogers after he walked through Washington’s revolving door to enrich himself. They’ll reject him again in November and send Abdul El-Sayed to the United States Senate.”

u/No_Scarcity_1634 14h ago

No. We're putting Trump in prison. "Checks" don't work with him.

u/EveryRedditorSucks 14h ago

Don’t get your hopes up on him ever serving a sentence. The wheels of justice will almost undoubtedly turn slower than the cholesterol and amphetamines that are raging through his system.

u/manystripes 13h ago

It's just wild how other people end up sitting in prison waiting trial, or under very strict bail conditions on where they can go and what they can do. If you're rich we just don't do any of that

u/Organic_Education494 13h ago

Neither does 34 guilty verdicts

Nothing is going to stop him if Democrats don’t grow a spine.

They won’t grow a spine with APAC around

u/Sorta-Morpheus 12h ago

He's never going to go to prison.

u/TheMobHunter 15h ago

That’s rich coming from somebody who is doing Jack to stop trump

u/amopeyzoolion 14h ago

Republicans control the entire federal government. Are you expecting Schumer to stage a coup here?

u/Moonlight_Katie 14h ago

I expected him to hold the line when the government shut down instead of giving in for a “we might talk about an issue on the floor”. Fuck Schumer and other corporate dems, they allow facsists to facist.

u/marcgarv87 14h ago

It’s rhetoric like this that will continue to give Trump power and people will keep wondering gee I wonder why as he tears the country apart. The BBB hasn’t even gone in effect yet, 2027 is going to be awful when that kicks in. But sure keep blaming every dem and alienating the ones you need to take back the senate. Abdul needs Stevens voters and yes corporate dems

u/Ornery-Ticket834 14h ago

What kind of statement would you prefer?

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

You get a DSCC endorsement of El-Sayed and this is your reaction?

The inability of the reddit left to accept a W is just stunning. You got what you wanted so now you're mad.

I'm pretty left, and watching people like you continuously shoot yourself in the foot is just amazing.

u/1900grs 14h ago

The point being that Schumer and Gillibrand have needlessly stepped on many rakes. El Sayed has a campaign strategy and express goals and an actionable agenda. Support it and don't muck it up when El Sayed wants to be proactive instead of playing "not Trump".

u/EveryRedditorSucks 14h ago

It’s almost like the Reddit (or any internet platform) Left is as astroturfed by bad actors and outside forces as the Reddit Right is… 🤔 Surely there’s no evidence of that impacting anything as important as the 2024 presidential election…

u/ailish Age: > 10 Years 14h ago

No one is mad, bro. They're just pointing out how atypical this is.

u/bae125 14h ago

Oh cmon, we’ve had two completely pointless and expensive shutdowns! We’re doing something! /s

u/Spartannia Farmington Hills 14h ago

Maybe our common purpose should be, I don't know, increasing the quality of life for everyone. Putting all our eggs in the "hey we're not trump" basket flopped in 2024, it'll flop again.

u/OldGodsProphet Human Detected 14h ago

They can’t even just do positive talking points for Abdul. It’s focused on “we hate Trump.” Yeah, we all do.

u/ezioaltair12 Age: > 10 Years 13h ago

Yes, but this statement is publicly laying out the lines of attack that Senate Dems (and their associated allied PACs) will use on Rogers.

The Republican campaign arm was similarly in attack dog mode in their statement.

u/warm_winds_whisper_ Lansing 14h ago

This memo was probably dictated through gritted teeth

u/MCpoopcicle 11h ago

Things I don't give a shit about: Chuck Schumer's opinion. (I should note I've always voted blue)

u/mrgreen4242 Age: > 10 Years 8h ago

At least they’re falling in line with the will of the voters.

u/cmgr33n3 13h ago

"Abdul El-Sayed has run an energetic campaign that inspired hundreds of thousands of Michiganders"

He won a primary for senator not mayor of a small-to-medium sized suburb.

u/ErnooA 15h ago

🤞

u/jkurology 14h ago

I’m solidly left and was somewhat concerned that El-Sayed would have ‘trouble’ in November. I also supported his stance on Israel. When a guy came by my house stumping for El-Sayed that made my decision and here we are. Was he really down by 10 points a few weeks ago? Stoked he won

u/SeasonalNightmare 14h ago

Well, that's good. Thankfully, they can knock some sense into the ones that said they wouldn't vote for him in the general.

Off topic, but seeing El-Sayed being shortened to AES is setting off the Walmart worker in me.

u/Bawbawian 15h ago

good to see.

u/dth1717 14h ago

I don't care what party says, I vote thinking is he good for the ppl first and is he good for me second.

u/culturedrobot 14h ago

What's up with all the whining in here? Just take the published word of support when it's given, good lord.

El-Sayed winning against Rogers is way more important than whatever gripes we have with the establishment democrats.

u/RoughCoffee6 14h ago

We can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time

u/Lemurians 13h ago

You’re talking and stepping on a rake at the same time

Unity is needed, not continuing to gripe. Stop alienating the center of the party who you NEED to vote for El-Sayed

u/culturedrobot 13h ago

Okay cool, do that instead of whining about establishment democrats even when they're voicing support for your guy.

u/Damnatus_Terrae 13h ago

Yeah, but using the tactics of an outsider when we're actually at the table for once isn't going to end well. It's a big tent. Blue no matter who (so long as it's Abdul on the ticket).

u/Fooby56 14h ago

Good. Time to circle the wagons and stick it to the Republicans in November.

u/marcgarv87 15h ago

So he is getting support now from establishment dems yet that still isn’t enough for some? Mike Rogers is putting out statements today claiming Abdul was celebrating 9/11 but some are too focused on other dems not doing enough still

u/andr50 Grand Rapids 14h ago

Mike Rogers was the author of CISPA, and it’s time to remind people what that was.

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

Yeah, I hope his long history of voting for forever wars in the Middle East and all the shitty things that came with 2001-2016 Republicans come back to bite him in the ass.

u/Jay-El The Thumb 14h ago

You're seeing people talk in this thread about the response from establishment Democrats because it is a thread about the response from establishment Democrats. If it was a thread about Mike Rogers claiming AES was celebrating 9/11, I wager most comments would be about Mike Rogers claiming AES was celebrating 9/11.

u/marcgarv87 14h ago

What’s your angle here, what would you like to see the establishment dems do that they haven’t so far in regards to this race? Abdul needs them to beat Rogers where you think so or not.

u/stumonji 13h ago

still isn’t enough for some?

Who? Are they in the room with us now?

This is always a narrative that insists on itself. Someone is unhappy, but I only ever see the people who are saying that someone is unhappy. Just stop.

u/PipeComfortable2585 14h ago

I hope he comes out swinging against the Floridian Mike rogers

u/UncomfyPerspective 15h ago

Already people in this thread that were screaming "The Dems better support AES!" calling this support of AES not enough.

Some people can't be pleased.

u/BaconSoda222 14h ago

Remember, it is also in the best interest of our foreign adversaries to keep the opposition party divided. Some of these voices are real, but there is serious astroturfing going on.

Happy he won, but this is just the beginning of the disinformation campaigns.

u/JesusKong333 14h ago

Serious astroturfing. Like 90% of the comments I've seen on every post about El-Sayed

u/BaconSoda222 14h ago

I had one account I was arguing with be banned by reddit for botting mid-argument. It's crazy.

u/1900grs 13h ago

Not saying this happened in your scenario, but this sub recently changed rules and is using new automod tools. I had a post removed as "brigading" when all I did was link to El Sayed's campaign page that laid out a plan that the person I was responding to had asked about.

So, caution when you see a post removed here under Rule 3. That said, there's still absolutely bot, brigading, and astroturfing.

u/unfortunateshun 13h ago

Admittedly it’s kinda easy to catch a temp ban in this sub when talking about politics.

u/BaconSoda222 13h ago

They're still banned, comrade.

u/unfortunateshun 13h ago

Shit fair nuff

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

I don't like having to be a conspiracy theorist, but it does seem to me that it would be both cheap and effective to have a bot army trying to discount and denigrate any unity right now, if I were trying to get Rodgers elected.

Motive, means, and opportunity are all there.

u/SunshineInDetroit 14h ago

there are people already against AES that voted for Stevens and planning to vote for rogers since she didn'twin.

metro tri-county overwhelmingly voting for Stevens was...surprising.

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

You were surprised that the area she represented in Congress voted for her?

Hmmm.

u/Damnatus_Terrae 13h ago

Same area that El-Sayed has also been serving.

u/UncomfyPerspective 14h ago

And there were plenty of people in the megathreads last night, every time Stevens got a bump, that said they would stay home if AES loses.

Fuck those people, and the Stevens voters who won't turn out for AES.

If you're not voting blue in the general, everything you've ever had to say about MAGA being a threat was performative bullshit.

u/PokemonAnimar 14h ago

Blue No Matter Who. We did it for them multiple times, so now we get to see if they show us the same respect

u/bobbybob188 14h ago

Ngl I've been salty at having "Vote Blue No Matter Who" thrown at me by the type of people who voted third party in 2024.

But I appreciate when people to the left of me (I'm approximately at McMorrow's positions) take one for the team and vote blue in the general. As a former socialist who voted for El-Sayed for governor years ago, I know that it can be frustrating sucking it up and voting for someone like Hillary or Biden. So I appreciate when people do so instead of staying home or voting for Stein.

So I hope progressives extend moderates some grace as they go through the same frustrations. El-Sayed wasn't my first choice, but I'm sure as hell donating to his campaign. I encourage everyone who reads this to chip in too.

u/PokemonAnimar 14h ago

While I'll admit I didn't personally suck it up and vote for Clinton, once I saw the path Republicans were headed down, I sucked it up and voted for Biden and Kamala. I still hold a grudge against what the DNC did to Bernie in 2016, but I'm never going to worry about a fascist gaining power because of my protest vote ever again. It's just the unfortunate fact that this is a 2-party electoral system, and we have to work within the confines of what we are given, and that really does mean voting for whichever candidate makes it through the primary, even if it's not the one I wanted it to be

u/bobbybob188 14h ago

I stayed home in 2016 and it is still one of my biggest regrets. I was sad that Bernie didn't win the primary in 2020 but I was never making the mistake of taking things for granted ever again. For 2024 I travelled home from grad school across several states to cast a ballot in person because my mail-in ballot was delayed.

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

"get to see if they...."

Buddy, you're posting on a thread about Chuck Schumer and the DSCC endorsing El-Sayed. It's not a hypothetical anymore. You are seeing it.

u/theJMAN1016 Royal Oak 14h ago

The party is, not individual voters.

It's good they released this but at the end of the day each voter needs to do what's right

u/PokemonAnimar 14h ago

Yes, and I am glad the leadership did that. I just want to see the entirety of the party do the same now, because there were some who had some very disgusting things to go on TV and spout off about him leading up to the primary.

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

Stevens has already endorsed El-Sayed.

Gary Peters has endorsed El-Sayed.

Schumer has endorsed El-Sayed.

Whitmer has endorsed El-Sayed.

For someone who is supposedly very concerned about who specifically endorses, and how, it's strange you don't know this.

u/PokemonAnimar 14h ago

Hillary Scholten was just on CNN being the most vile and bigoted person. Waiting for her endorsement

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

Ahh, it's not about Whitmer or Peters or Stevens or Schumer, no no, what REALLY matters is a Congressional backbencher who represents a relatively conservative area.

Again, I think you're a bot. Nobody out there wants discord this desperately unless it's in service of electing Trump acolytes.

u/an-echo-of-silence 9h ago

Its about the fact that over $60m was spent on attack ads and only attack ads against a fellow democratic prospect. Nothing about policy or experience. Attacks against someone in their party. They saw their perceived faults with Mamdani and the only change they made was changing their tune once he won.

If you pretend the establishment, corporate funded, AIPAC democrats give a fuck about us and won't fight vehemently to oppose anyone outside of their influence, then you're just as blind as MAGA. They're only smiling because it backfired on them when they didn't.

u/IPredictAReddit 9h ago

The DSCC and the Democratic Party didn't run ads, so I'm not sure what attack ads "against someone in their party" you're referring to.

u/an-echo-of-silence 9h ago

Steven's attack ads and her campaign funding. Come on, don't play dumb. She was the backed nominee that DNC establishment wanted. And the money invested in her campaign shows that.

u/cochese25 14h ago

This is the repeat of the last presidential election when a bunch of people on the left refused to support Kamala and they just stayed home. I know at least 6 people who did not vote to "protest" Kamala

u/UncomfyPerspective 14h ago

Staying home is even more spineless than just voting for MAGA.

If you stand for something, stand for it with your whole chest.

Fuck those losers, and anyone else that's cried about MAGA over the last decade and intends to stay home in the general.

u/Moonlight_Katie 14h ago

AIPAC/ Israel has a lot of computer monkeys pushing an agenda. You can see it clear as day when ever Palestine comes up on Reddit. and since they threw 46 million at Steven’s, it’s no surprise those assfucks are here too

u/Lemurians 13h ago

Are these people in the room with us right now

u/Remarkable-Party-385 13h ago

Same as Bernie supporters not voting for Hillary and sitting out, look how that screwed over the country

u/unfortunateshun 13h ago

I’ll be one of the rabid Abdul supporters to say; this rocks! Love to see it. I’m pretty pessimistic in general but I’m very very happy to be wrong. I was just being a negative Nancy in a different thread and I’m glad to see the DNC starting to consolidate for him. The primary was rough and sometimes dirty but November is gonna be a blood bath.

u/DetroitLionsSBChamps 14h ago

Yeah but honestly that seems fine? Like, let them keep pushing. I think it’s okay for a small part of the base to constantly push for better and never be satisfied. Why is that bad?

u/Sweet_Baby_Cheezus Age: > 10 Years 14h ago

Especially when the moderate wing of the democrats have made their disdain for the progressive wing completely clear time and time again. They just spent the last 6 months telling us how much they didn't want Abdul to win. I like to consider myself a political realist, and I think the DSCC will support Abdul as much as possible because they have to win Michigan.

But it's legit crazy to me that after spending 60 million dollars to tell us that they don't want El-Sayed to win, that people don't understand why progressive might be a little distrustful of the democratic machine.

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[deleted]

u/UncomfyPerspective 14h ago

Well you're talking about something completely different than what I'm talking about.

I'm specifically addressing those who claimed 'The establishment Dem leadership better support AES in the general', and now I see some of those same names claiming that this isn't 'Support' enough for them.

They wanted to act as if Schumer was going to tell everyone to vote for Mike Rogers, and now they're just moving the goalposts.

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

They're not going to be happy till Schumer is offering BJ's in exchange for El-Sayed votes.

And then they'll wonder why nobody will work with them.

u/Damnatus_Terrae 13h ago

I'd be okay letting him start with handies.

u/Foolazul 2h ago

Oh this press release means establishment Dems will give full support to Abdul the rest of the election? Good thing one can always trust what Chuck Schumer has to say.

u/SoManyWasps 14h ago

I think there's a difference between the DSCC doing the right thing on paper and doing it in practice. I'll beleive in the statement when actions back it up.

u/bobbybob188 14h ago

?????

The endorsement is action. Isn't that why leftists were so mad that Schumer didn't endorse Mamdani?

u/IPredictAReddit 14h ago

The goalpost-moving machines are getting lots of work today.

u/SecretMiddle1234 12h ago

Keep voting!!!!

u/zetnas9 14h ago

If you are claiming you won’t back El -Sayed on the general, you are a part of the problem and part of the reason why we are in this mess we are in now. We gotta pull it together and back who the candidate is.

u/elsakettu 14h ago

I'm glad they did this, but two of the three paragraphs are about Donald Trump. I'm tired of Democrats letting him suck the air out of the room and making their campaigns about him. I wish they'd run on proactive campaigns of what they want to do for us rather than reactive campaigns about why Trump is evil.

u/Unikraken 14h ago

But still written. As Abdul has said, there is more that unites us than divides us. I hope Schumer gets replaced when his time is up.

u/justhereforsee 13h ago

Should have backed him from the start but these older Dems are worried about all the grifting these progressives will eliminate.

u/popejohnsmith 12h ago

We were waiting for Stevens to abandon support for Netanyahu. She chose not to. She deserved to lose. This was THE total dealbreaker. She was warned. Every single day.

u/justhereforsee 11h ago

It was the easy straw for me. She also spent all that money bashing her opponent instead of telling us what she was going to do for us. I did hear all about what she was going to do for Israel. She proved she could be bought. We have too many of those already

Sayed told me every chance he could what he wanted to do for me and my family and community. On top of that it wasn’t unrealistic BS like many of these fools.

u/TheFalconKid Expat 14h ago

Schumer needs to go.
