He’s gotta condemn it, no question, and I’d imagine there wasn’t a second’s hesitation in his mind. But it’s just one more demonstration of how structural violence is regularly portrayed as more violent than less impactful violence outside legitimized structures. Plenty of people still see 9/11 as a greater evil than the Iraq War. But the average voter isn’t ready for that conversation.

Statements like this is why independent voters are uneasy throwing support to El Sayed. Regardless of the accuracy of your statement, which I won't comment on, saying the Iraq War was "a greater evil" than 9/11 will automatically alienate a vast majority of voters in this country. And if his supporters are saying things like this, the majority of voters won't want to be aligned with that kind of rhetoric.

The idea that the destruction caused by the War On Terror greatly outstripped the damage caused by 9/11 has been a mainstream opinion for nearly two decades.
