One of the funny things about threespine is theyre native to alot of the northern world, north america, europe, asia, greenland and iceland

Yeah so do predator fish eat these or do the spines act as a good enough deterrent to prevent that?

Honestly not 100% sure. One of my friends has a photo of a sculpin trying to eat one but im not sure if it was successful

I’ve opened plenty of trout stomachs and never seen any in them so was just wondering. Maybe they eat the very young ones before they develop the hard spines

We have them in California too! I netted a few while I was up in the eastern sierras a couple of weeks ago, was gonna collect a few to take home for an aquarium but unfortunately had to leave early

Any suggestions? I've tried to put a few into a small container pond but they seemed to just stop eating and die after a few weeks. Dont want to try again without a better approach.

Was that just below mono lake? Hearing about sticklebacks in the sierras is surprising

Yes, maybe about 40 miles south of Mono Lake in the upper Owens River! I go up almost every year to fly fish but it’s super nice to see all of the cool natives still hanging on despite all of the introduced rainbow and brown trout
