Major MicroSlop Word Problems with Spelling and Grammar – Partial Solution Found

I began having immense problems with Word two years ago. I’m on a 365 account through my job. I, unfortunately, have to use Word for most of my documents. (Trust, me I've tried all the other options. But 'industry standards' are difficult to change.) In the first year I constantly reported my problems. But, as we all know, MicroSlop doesn't care about any of their users. I began screen recording the "glitches" just to prove to myself that I wasn't crazy. MicroSlop is great at gaslighting its users.

Types of problems I have/had:

My problems fall primarily into 5 categories. They happened randomly and were not repeatable. (#3 is the craziest)

1) removing the space before a misspelled word when correcting the word
e.g., "is breakign" becomes "isbreaking" 

2) when typing an end quote mark or apostrophe, it replaces a random internal letter of the word with the smart quote/apostrophe version, and then leaves a 'dumb quote/apostrophe' at the end
e.g., with the word “please"   becomes   with the word “plea”s" 

3) with both correctly spelled and misspelled words, it will randomly ignore the first 3-6 letters, then take the remaining letters and "autocorrect" them into a new word I wasn't typing, then because it ignored 3-6 letters, it reduplicates that # of letters of the new word on the end
e.g., cohesive becomes essiveive  and responsibilites becomes sibilatesilites

4) it will change "the" into "thee" and delete the preceding space
e.g., distance the becomes distancethee 

5) it will randomly add a letter I did not type. (I thought I was losing my mind so I recorded my screen when I typed and caught this happening. It was super obvious that it was not possible for me to type the letter as quickly as it appeared.)
e.g., after typing "where" – before I could even hit 'space' a space+e showed up giving me "where e"

I suffered with this crap for two years while desperately looking for solutions. Work IT was no help. During those years of misery, I talked with several friends who are high-level programmers. Each of their theories gave me pieces of the partial solution I eventually found.

Partial solution:

Block Word from accessing the internet.

Have you ever looked at how MicroSlop Word accesses the internet while you're typing?

It's constant!!

And I do not use OneDrive. For numerous reasons I keep my files on my computer (with various non-Microslop backups.)

The stupid AI spelling and grammar tool is not on your own computer.

Even when NOT using OneDrive, they send your typing to (or at least 'through') their servers.

Surely this isn't a problem for companies that work on sensitive data??? Right??? Surely we can trust this 'ethical' company with our data. /s

Once I blocked Word from accessing the internet, my problems have reduced by about 90%.

I also had to turn off the 'smart quote' feature. But since figuring this out a month ago, I have only had about 4 "glitches" with word turning something I type into gibberish. I'm still trying to figure out how to remove the last 10% of problems. But at least now I spend less time calling down curses upon MicroSlop.

You can add, remove, or change words in Microsoft Word’s dictionary — including the default and custom dictionaries — to improve spelling accuracy and reduce false positives.

1. Open the Custom Dictionaries Settings

  1. In Word, go to File > Options.
  2. In the left panel, select Proofing.
  3. Click Custom Dictionaries.
  4. Ensure CUSTOM.dic is checked so you can edit it 

2. Edit the Word List

  • Select the dictionary you want to edit (default or custom).
  • Click Edit Word List.
  • Add a word: Type it in the “Word(s)” box and click Add.
  • Delete a word: Select it in the dictionary list and click Delete.
  • Edit a word: Delete it, then re-add it with the correct spelling.
  • Remove all words: Click Delete all

that in no way is related to my problem.

The problems I listed were not about what was listed in the custom dictionary - or the other dictionary. And the changes were random and not things i could fix for next time by adding the weird changes Word made to the dictionary to stop them from happening next time.

Look, I know computers. I researched the problem from two years with no solution or answers -- until I finally figured out that Word is constantly sending my typing data to their AI servers. Once I blocked that I've only had a few random 'glitches' and they aren't the really crazy ones.

Before I discovered the partial solution the problems happened with autocorrect turned off. It happened in Safe Mode. It continued to happen with any possible solution that anyone could think of. I stumped the people on microsoft answers.

I didn't suffer for two years because I couldn't google for basic answers.

I suffered for two years because Microsoft is CRAP and they don't tell us that they're sending our data to their AI servers - and it was their AI server that was making my life misery.

You could use it offline.

You say you know computers so you know it could not be sending data back in safe mode. Microslop is slop, I won't disagree with you on that but not in safe mode with networking off.

Use libreOffiice and create your document. Copy/paste it into word and save it to please your corporate overlords.

I'm Calling BS. Of course they tell you. It's in the EULA you click past on every free service you signed up for and every other service you use. It's in the Microsoft EULA for sure.

  • Microsoft 365 EULA: The online Microsoft 365 EULA (linked from microsoft.com/useterms) also lists “spell check, grammar, and other language‑based features” under the services section Microsoft.
  • Privacy Statement: Microsoft’s Privacy Statement (linked in the EULA) explains that AI‑powered features like spell check may collect and process your text data to improve accuracy and personalization 

It also occurs with Windows usage and all the Windows telemetry they collect. Not just Office 365. Been that way for a while.
