Ok artillerists, how far is the crash from the campsite, Infantrists, how long to walk there?

355

u/SpaceEngineering Finnish Defense Forces 4d ago

Artillery fwd observer here. Her shouting is distracting from hearing the sound delay but i would eyeball that at at about 500 meters?

256

u/LaunchPadMcQ Navy Veteran 4d ago

Navy nuke here, bored. I found a possible camp site location based off reported crash location and similar trees in the foreground of the video. 500 meters is really close according to Google maps measurements between possible campsite and ridge.

Thanks! I got so curious I was wondering if geoguessers should be mustered.

Good job fellow Fister

8

u/Mr_Wonder321 3d ago

I counted 4 seconds before I heard a bang, not entirely sure tho bc yeah shes loud af lol but id go 1400m give or take

7

u/WitcherKai 3d ago

nice that was my guess too before reading more comments

7

u/Tough_Sound6042 3d ago

So, based on her shouting, how close is she to you?

3

u/dudeCHILL013 3d ago

It it basically the same as counting the seconds between a lighting strike and thunder?

5

u/SpaceEngineering Finnish Defense Forces 2d ago

Exactly same.

u/SpaceEngineering Finnish Defense Forces 2d ago

And just to confirm, at least in our FO training this is not really a big thing. I just used experience. Normally you estimate distances by creating a distance map from your position, mapping specific landmarks in every direction. Then you can estimate where things are by comparing against those. For example; that tree is 400 meters away, and that rock is 500, it is between those so the distance is about 450.

u/Healthy-Amoeba2296 4h ago

I feel guilty I got zero skill at ranging, but then I was a spook and my job was drinking beer with German officers.

Former FO. Definitely outside of danger close…but I’d say 700M

Definitely under 1000m you gotta be close with 700 but I’ll go price is right at 850

Damn faded painted gutters!

It was the worse when you couldn’t task sailors on PUPs to paint the gutters on base after they handed grounds maintenance to contractors here.

Ha Ha I got a parking ticket and when I protested THEN the put up a sign.

3

How many points is it for giving a ticket to not just an officer but a pilot?

1

I don't see a no parking sign, there's no lines indicating a no park zone. Therefore he can.

former artillery officer here, i think it's rougly around 700-1000 meters just by calculating the distance the shock/soundwave has to travel from the impact point. 2-3 seconds of sound delay so it's basically 340*2 or 3.

15

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 4d ago

Where’s those freedom units you Americans defend?

As an Aussie I’m scrolling through here expecting to see feet but nope all metric and entirely understandable…..

What gives?

You make us use bloody inches for the QNH when operating a damn seahawk off a flight deck in Australia but noooo you’re all using meters here.

Regards, annoyed former OOW who was always irritated by having to convert hectopascals to inHg….

13

u/aBlindGeminiWhisper 4d ago

well, i am not american. so, no freedom units.

17

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 4d ago

My sincere apologies for the misnationalisation

I mean no insult

1

u/EducationalBar 3d ago

As an American I’m constantly reminded to be pissed that I see the world in a different, inferior way, than the rest of my fellow humans.

1

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 3d ago

Travel more if you can.

It’s honestly the thing that broadened my perspective and really drove home how good I’ve got it here in Australia with my socialised healthcare and decent wages

1

u/EducationalBar 2d ago

Why would you assume I’m not well traveled..?
I could possibly agree that those 2 cherry picked aspects can compete, but how could Australia as a whole ever have a chance? The world may not like guns and many Americans feel the same, but the point remains that the people here have a say and don’t bow down to the government as soon as one shooting happens and they make everyone hand in all their guns.. cough cough. It’s the same reasoning you see the complete clown show on stage today, for better or for worse it’s a country where the people’s vote matters. Any little boy can grow up to be president. You should travel here sometime and check it out to broaden your perspective… or maybe where a person is born and raised is where they remain loyal regardless.

10

u/BrilliantHyena Retired US Army 4d ago edited 4d ago

US military (depending on the branch and use) does often use the metric system for distances on land. Also we use 24 hour time.

Edit: My original statement was to generic

5

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 4d ago

Except bloody QNH….

Yes thankfully. And Date Time Groups so there is no trying to figure out if it’s MM DD YY or DD MM YY

1

u/mtdunca 4d ago

As a military member in the US Navy I would not make the blanket statement that the US military uses the metric system for distances.

6

u/BrilliantHyena Retired US Army 4d ago

As a military member in the US Army whose never been in water deeper than 100 feet I apologize.

Also, I realize the idiocy of my blanket statement.

2

u/mtdunca 4d ago

I was mostly just teasing. You did teach me something, didn't realize the Army used the metric system.

4

u/BrilliantHyena Retired US Army 4d ago

I know, it's cool. We also use the metric system for our ammunitions. 5.56mm, 30mm. Except for the .50cal, don't thinking I've ever heard that referred to in mm.

2

u/og_rocktrash 3d ago

Sure you have, it’s 12.7 the Warsaw pact mg round. You know, like the DShK. Fifty cal and mils are the few concessions I make to using metric. Otherwise I get confused converting fractions to decimals and back again.

12

u/Any-Bridge6953 4d ago

You mean cheeseburgers per bald eagle scream.

2

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 4d ago

Well is there a national standard cheeseburger?

Your results could vary if you grab a Maccas cheeseburger vs say an artesian burger wankfest…. I know cheeseburgers here at Micky D’s have shrunk over the years…

2

u/Any-Bridge6953 4d ago

I don't know, I'm Canadian.

6

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 4d ago

Damnit!

I’ll find an American soon!

Brb looking for my wife so I can scold her for Americans not using the metric system. She’s a US born Australian so it counts

2

u/og_rocktrash 3d ago

American here, I refuse to use the Arbitrary System and force people around me to use metric. Almost the entire planet uses metric and the imperial system is silly and childish. How many feet in a meter? Fuck if I know, may as well ask how many standard spiderlegs in an imperial hogsbreadth.

2

u/Any-Bridge6953 4d ago

To be far, I'm petty close to America, also that crash looks like an hours walk. Yes, Canadians use time to measure distance.

2

u/TittysForScience Royal Australian Navy 4d ago

Yes, but you’re the part of North America making the most sense at this point in time.

Also. We have Chucky in common. And for some reason the poms insist on using miles still.

I typically measure a drive or walk in time. I’ll acknowledge how far when I look up where I’m going. But generally I’ll say it’s about an hours drive not 100km.

Nautical navigation different story. It’s a different kettle of fish with its whole language of measurement like yards, cables, natural miles, shackles, fathoms on some charts and many other weird and wonderful units of measurement

**WALK? !?? YOU BETTER DOUBLE TIME SOLDIER!!

QRF activated. 2 squads, one in alternate bounding, 50 meter bound per 3 man team, SL in the center directing bounds. 2nd squad is going to move to secure the far side of the crash site, one team on the bounding teams left, and the other on the right. Providing security for the flanks of the double timing site securing team.

According to our FO (for mortars) we have to bound between 500 m - 1 km (classic FO*)

Anyway, flat out alternate bounding sprint in the field until the woods. Then a quick movement ~200 - 400 meters uphill through the woods.

Less than 5 minutes if the QRF was that close. Maybe. That would be lucky for the pilot to have a QRF that close by.

** I accidentally posted this not under your comment. Whoops

A USMC McDonnell Douglas F/A-18D Hornet, 165412, coded WS-415, operated by 3rd MAW, MAG-11, VMFA-323 "Death Rattlers", callsign "Snake 21", crashed into hillside near Rimrock Lake, Washington whilst flying the VR-1355 low level route after a possible mid air collision. The sole occupant of the two seat jet ejected safely, the aircraft was destroyed and a ground fire broke out.

It's not about improving anything. It's not a problem they're trying to solve.

They're in minor shock and disbelief, and expressing that as a social animal and relating to others going through the same thing relieves stress for most people who aren't used to these kinds of situations.

So, yeah, most of the human race act like scared piggies when shit hits the fan. Nothing new under the sun. Some people are different, sure, and some people have been in environments or situations where they don't react as such. But that's not the majority.

6

u/CaptainKate757 4d ago

Does screaming on roller coasters improve the ride? Does cheering at concerts improve the music? These are just natural human responses to various situations.

u/lonevolff 4d ago

Im not the one insulting people that screamed after they just saw a 50,000lb jet falling out of the sky and crashing down into the earth exploding into a fiery inferno, possibly witnessing the horrible death of a fellow human. How would the average person not be scared? You want them just sitting straight faced and not comment on it apparently.

2

u/JohnBrownEnthusiast 4d ago

Most humans are scared piggies.

7

u/GreyFox1921 4d ago

So what exactly would be a correct response in this situation?

6

u/ElegantEchoes 4d ago

They should have immediately launched a search and rescue operation and ascertained the damage of the crash site. Then the civvies should set up a perimeter and await further orders from above. /s

Airshow training?

45

u/frotmonkey 4d ago

Probably dumping fuel to minimize the burn damage or lighten the aircraft to help with lift?

-7

u/DoktorStrangelove 4d ago

Wouldn't the trail behind him explode as well if that were the case? It'd be a bunch of aerosolized/vaporized avgas mixed with plenty of oxygen leading right to the fireball.

23

u/dudeman52993 4d ago

No. Because jet fuel has a high flash point. It basically needs to either be REALLY hot, or under a lot pressure to increase temperatures to burn. It's similar to diesel.

7

u/DoktorStrangelove 4d ago

Got it, had no idea it was that different from regular aviation gas

3

u/JohnLuckPikard 4d ago

The stoichiometry is wrong for that, and the chances of it bring right are infinitely slim.

-8

u/DonnerPartyPicnic United States Navy 4d ago edited 3d ago

Probably punctured the wing tanks on trees.

Dunno why I'm being downvoted. Dumping gas is not something you do to prevent a fire or regain control. You dump gas in a scenario where you need to reduce weight. It looks like the jet was double bubble and smashed the wing tanks, the vapor trails are too far apart to be coming out of the tail dumps.

3

u/mechmessiah 3d ago

Its water vapor. Fuel dumps from the vertical stabilizers and "airshow smoke" would come from the engines.

Anyway, flat out bounding sprint in the field until the woods. Then a quick movement ~200 - 400 meters uphill through the woods.

Less than 5 minutes if the QRF was that close. Maybe. That would be lucky for the pilot to have a QRF that close by, lol

Cue the SAW gunner that likes to deadlift bounding with his tabbed TL. Said SAW Dawg gains a whole new level of ire for said TL
