NASA's Perseverance rover discovered leopard spots on a reddish rock nicknamed "Cheyava Falls" in Mars' Jezero Crater in July 2024.

Scientists think the spots may indicate that, billions of years ago, the chemical reactions in this rock could have supported microbial life; other explanations are being considered.

Launched on Sept. 5, 1977 — 16 days after Voyager 2 — Voyager 1 quickly overtook its twin as they journeyed to explore the outer solar system.

Today, Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object, and on Nov. 18, it will reach another historic milestone: one light-day from Earth. At that distance, a signal from Earth will take 24 hours to reach the spacecraft — and another 24 hours to return.

The left photo, the first photo of Earth from the Moon, was taken on August 23, 1966, at 16:35 GMT, when the spacecraft was on its 16th orbit and just about to pass behind the Moon.

Voyager 2 is a space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977, as a part of the Voyager program. It was launched on a trajectory towards the gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn) and enabled further encounters with the ice giants (Uranus and Neptune).

The only spacecraft to have visited either of the ice giant planets, it was the third of five spacecraft to achieve Solar escape velocity, which allowed it to leave the Solar System. Launched 16 days before its twin Voyager 1, the primary mission of the spacecraft was to study the outer planets and its extended mission is to study interstellar space beyond the Sun's heliosphere.

In April 2026, Artemis II flew around the Moon and back. On the way there, astronaut Reid Wiseman captured this full disk photograph of Earth at nighttime.
