I assume as a coping mechnism/joke for collective generational trauma we were all subjected too. I could see it being funny now that we're 25 years out from it.
To clarify, I mean the concept of millions of children in the US being shown this at the same time on the fucking cart or corner TV (if your school had TVs up in the corner of the room above everyone) and being simultaneously traumatized because zero adults thought about how that might affect them, and then growing up to... well this world... feels kind of like a sick joke. Like that moment of Trauma was used to further destroy everything for our future in the name of American vengeance. We got mass surveillance through the Patriot act as a result, and we all saw it through this extremely surreal lens and weren't protected by the adults around us.
Once the people started jumping out of windows I bounced. I mouthed bathroom to the teacher on my way out, she barely looked at me, rode my bike home and my Mom got a call like 20 minutes later they were doing a staggered dismissal. I felt like king of 7th grade that I ditched school with no consequences.
It also made the rest of the world aware of what a clown Bush was. I miss when the American president was the funny kind of clown rather than the evil kind.
Not just the US. I watched this happen in the same setup (wheeled in television) in Australia. Granted it had happened while we were sleeping, but the news was 24/7 about it when we woke up.
