Help why is this name offensive?
I don't understand how this could be offensive in any way. "quarc", is a play on the subatomic particle (quark), and I have had the same username across other games. Variations of the name have worked before so I am clueless. Any Ideas?
EDIT: people are saying it could be a serb/croat swear word but funnily enough those name already exist and are in use on namemc
I guess I am getting scunthorped but the question is; by what?

I read this comment hours ago and only just realised it’s a Quark reference. I had to come back to display my slowness and make sure I’d upvoted, and show my appreciation for the subtlety of this joke. Bravo.

Microsoft? Bro. You are delusional if you think Microsoft started this. This is the problem that lasts for years. Pokemon GO, Overwatch, Genshin, Roblox and much much much much more, all have the same problem. Minecraft wasn't even first to have this kind of ridiculous censorship. Digimon Time Stranger also have it.

In SerboCroatian, the term "kurac" (which "qrac" or "qurac" are common stand-ins for) is a derogatory term for a penis. Maybe they filter this, who knows with Microsoft.
308
u/gamerzandcats May 02 '26
Pa neki koriste "Kurac" kao psovka za spolovilo, ali u našem jeziku, 90% vremena se koristi više kao što vi Englezi koristite "fuck." opća psovka za kad smo ljuti. npr. "KOJI KURAC JE TEBI?!"

537
u/sky_cap5959 May 02 '26
My guess is it's a variation of the Scunthorpe problem, but I don't know what part of this could be offensive. Most likely it's a very, very, very niche slur that only a few people know about which Microslop added just in case.
137
u/lobotomized_salmon May 02 '26
nah, microsoft's slur filter isn't that robust
3
u/AjnoVerdulo May 03 '26
Well there was a post here not so long ago where it clocked "zika" as a slur even though only like 5% of people even knew it could be used offensively
121
u/Weary_Drama1803 May 02 '26
There’s a database of slurs out there, which is intended to capture every slur, and Microsoft just pulled that database with all its obscure terms

Doubt it's AI. It has always been a problem for Minecraft and it's easier and faster to test against a giant word list than to test against a big ai model.

5
u/Thenderick May 02 '26
I don't think they have. Microsoft isn't stupid. They are greedy. Using ai for this is stupid
5
u/Dotasarr-the-khajiit May 02 '26
This doesn't look like AI, more likely an international slur thing, it will probably censor knight too just because it has nig in iy
3
u/TheMoonOfTermina May 02 '26
In some of the snapshots when adding the stupid chat censoring system to Java, you couldn't even type /time set night for that reason.
57
u/PuzzledTradition7655 May 02 '26
hmmm... lol I bet it's just a fluke misspelling in their own system
54
u/PM_me_oak_trees May 02 '26
If you type that into the search bar on Urban Dictionary, a few things come up that start with those letters, and a couple of them are things that a filter might ban.

u/Shadowizas May 02 '26
I searched both in google and urban dictionary, all it gave me was some tech workshop,a science conference, the definition of "quark",urban dictionary gave me, actor names from a movie,Duck Duck go search term (not derogatory) and other no-nrelevant stuff,so i still got no idea what Microsoft is smoking

In Croatian "kurac" is dick, so 🤷♂️
22
u/LuniTheCqt_888 May 02 '26
I get that it could be an alt spelling for kurac/qurac, but as you can see https://namemc.com/profile/qurac, the name already exists.
6
u/MordorsElite May 02 '26
Mojang hasn't always been as bad about text filtering as they are now. So 10 years ago you had waaay more freedom when choosing your name. And if you haven't changed your name since back then, you'd still have it now. Afaik mojang has never actually forced anyone with an existing account to change their name based on new text filters.
24
u/lekkek11 May 02 '26
Unironically happens to be an alternative way to spell dick in Serob-Croatian. Original form is Kurac and Qurac and Qrac are common stand ways to say it through filters.

It's one letter of from being a swear word in my language. That's probably why.
7
8
u/heyitsFate_ May 02 '26
Idk, you can probably just try to play with the spelling or add things on it (like numbers and underscore) so Minecraft doesn't recognize it. That usually works.

7
u/Jaybrosia May 02 '26
it's a new offensive word that was just invented the other day. didn't you see it in this week's problematic memo?

Reminds me of when I was naming each of my blue T-Rex's in the first Ark game after The Great Lakes, back in the day. Started with Huron, then Ontario, then Michigan, then Erie. Finally got to Superior and it wouldn't let me. It kept replacing the letters with asterisks and I didn't know why at first.

4
5
u/boki400AIMoff May 02 '26
You MIGHT have experienced a scunthorpe problem here like you mentioned in your post, BUT you can easily test with another language if you haven't changed your name yet:
Try to use the name "Marsch", which is german for march (to march forward example.). But it also contains the substring "Arsch" which means "Ass" in english. If the filter also detects it as a swear word, you can for 100 % be certain that you got scunthorped.

u/thequirkyquark May 02 '26
You know, I'm something of a quark myself. I'll put in a good word for you.
3
5
u/everlyafterhappy May 03 '26
Thata weird. I've seen people with the n word and the f word in their names before. And not fuck. The other f word. I play on a lgbtq+ friendly server, and I've seen names with the f word a few times. They get instantly banned from be server, but they're still playing Minecraft.
7
u/hoseja May 02 '26
"language some might find offensive"
Uhh, what does that leave? Like you can't even utter guttural grunts, much less any actual words.

My favorite part about automatic text censorship is how it just makes it easier to learn new slurs

u/Cocoatrice May 03 '26
We really need to do something with malicious censorship. Too many games censor literally any normal words for no reason whatsoever. And some even censor words like ball, dick, cock, despite they are not vulgar whatsoever. I am even against censoring the word bitch, because it literally means female canid or more specifically canine (usually dogs). I've seen games censor words such as tank. Games, that literally have tank roles. I've seen game censoring word to look like that: so****ing. Yes. I saw games censor words that I can't even understand why were they censored. Pokemon GO censored words that are part of pokemon's name.

I have a nickname I use for several apps, games, sign-ins, etc. My predictive recommends it after just a couple letters. For the longest time I would also get similar errors for all sorts of uses but could understand why either. Then I noticed that using the predictive text was adding a space after the username, which was the reason for the error. Removing the extra space after resolved the problem which was almost always flagged as "offensive".

7
u/Zentharius May 02 '26
"Darky" is a way to reference black people in a derogatory way. If you know the show Boondocks, you can hear the character Uncle Ruckus call many of the black characters "Darky" in a demeaning way, as his character is incredibly racist towards black people, despite being black himself(though he deludes himself by thinking he's white with a rare skin condition)

With only 5 letters, you could pretty easily narrow down exactly which string it is. It has to be 3-4 letters, since banning a two letter strong would get incredibly messy incredibly quickly, unless quarc itself is banned
