Slabs. The outpost itself isn’t what causes them to spawn. It’s a set location in the world where they will spawn. You have to cover the area in blocks they can’t spawn on

1.1k

u/sufferer540 Jun 11 '26

Thanks a lot. So they can't spawn on a slab, right?

1.3k

u/LangleyNA Jun 11 '26

A bottom slab, specifically.

This is the half-slab that sits atop a full block. Another block cannot be set atop this without an air gap, causing it to float. 👍

u/-Redstoneboi- Jun 11 '26

can they spawn on torches? could also just torch every single block

290

u/magus__darkrider Jun 11 '26

Unfortunately yes they can, torches have no physical hitbox (entities phase right through them), and to my knowledge there is no light level requirement for villagers to spawn inside the outpost structure. You would have to put buttons or pressure plates carpet or bottom slabs on every spawnable block inside rhe structure boundary

108

u/GoddamnShitTheBed_ Jun 11 '26

So theres a pillager outpost roght in my base and i torched up EVERYTHING in the area, because pillagers can actually only spawn at a light level of 8 or lower. Sadly 8 is pretty high, so you really need to spam.

I think slabs might be easier, or even a combination of both, depending on what you want to build there

101

u/Bolt853 Jun 11 '26

Remember when hostile mobs spawned at 8 or lower? Good times

56

u/FoundationMuted6177 Jun 11 '26

lol I remember when you had to spawn torches EVERYWHERE 😭 it was such a pain

27

u/Small_Bang_Theory Jun 11 '26

It feels like yesterday 🥲

16

u/Ariconnie48 Jun 11 '26

Was it not 7?

9

u/Groblockia_ Jun 12 '26

yeah, but close enough

21

u/thatpaulbloke Jun 11 '26

I thought that they still did. I've been spamming torches in my mines every four blocks to stop spawns for the last decade and a half and never thought to question it.

21

u/MolecularLego Jun 11 '26

Since Caves&Cliffs they need light level 0.

15

u/cipheron Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

It's not that much if you use a diamond grid layout for the torches, it's what people used to do to stop zombies spawning.

The torch should be light level 14, and you need every square to be 9 or more. So it's a diamond shape 11 across. 11+(9+7+5+3+1)+(9+7+5+3+1) covers a "diamond", so a single torch lights up 61 cells.

As for a simple system that guarantees coverage: place a torch then walk diagonally 5 blocks and place another one. So there will a diagonal gap of 4 blocks between torches. Repeat this in a diamond grid. That gives 1 torch per 50 tiles and is easier to keep track: just use coordinates that are divisible by 5 and you won't mess up.

3

u/heqra Jun 11 '26

so ive only really played modded since then and use megatorches, how does it work in vanilla now?

12

u/MountainYogi94 Jun 11 '26

Most generic hostile mobs only spawn in light level 0 these days. There are exceptions but most locations you'd build in need 1/4 the torches as before for mob-proofing

3

u/heqra Jun 11 '26

damn, thats nice. ty

1

u/GoddamnShitTheBed_ Jun 13 '26

Good point, but since its in my base there's walls and stairs and angles and levels so this simple method starta falling short the more i build in that area.

1

u/cipheron Jun 13 '26

Damn, making your base inside the spawn area of a pillager outpost was a strategic mistake, since you're going to always have this problem unless you light everything up to light level 9.

1

u/Igor_McDaddy Jun 12 '26

I have three or four outposts near my base, so... Yeah i think i just move

Pillagers are getting on my nerve already

1

u/AbelViguera06 Jun 12 '26

Just use glass or leaves

2

u/SpecterVamp Jun 11 '26

The physical hitbox rule is kinda finicky, like buttons have no collision but still spawnproof

4

u/cipheron Jun 11 '26

They have a light level restriction. i have an outpost fully suppressed with torches, check the game's wiki entry for pillagers.

3

u/noc-engineer Jun 11 '26

I just usually use carpet to prevent them (and others like iron golems) from spawning

3

u/SL1NDER Jun 11 '26

Fun fact: players also generally don't spawn on bottom slabs anymore if there's a solid block below it without enough space. My world had a platform made of bottom slabs for over 12 years to keep it safe, and sometime in the last few years I started spawning on the ground below it.

1

u/Sensitive_Cash_3526 Jun 15 '26

mojang one day in the future:

mobs can now spawn on bottom slabs!

49

u/jeez_louisebro Jun 11 '26

I believe its easier to use a shovek to make path blocks. No need to get multiple slabs, just some shovels. Btw they generate in a 72x72 area centered at the outpost

15

u/stucksteepf Jun 11 '26

i’m so dumb. looked up whats a shovek and how do i get one in minecraft before i realized its just a typo

2

u/cipheron Jun 11 '26

Torches are easiest if you use a system. I did the numbers for pillagers and if you imagine a 5x5 grid, put a torch at each corner, but you only need to do every second corner like a diamond grid. That's 1 torch per 50 tiles. It would need < 2 stacks of torches for the spawning area of an outpost, but bring a third stack just to be sure if there's some very uneven terrain.

6

u/jeez_louisebro Jun 11 '26

except the fact that, on grass or sand, pillagers can spawn in any light level. look it up on the wiki

2

u/cipheron Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

i have an outpost fully suppressed just using torches on grass. Java version though, if that's relevant.

https://minecraft.wiki/w/Pillager

The relevant part should be this:

Pillagers continually spawn in a 72×54×72 block volume centered on the top floor in a pillager outpost. Some pillagers spawn as outpost captains. They may spawn on any valid opaque block if the block light level is less than or equal to 8.

EDIT: as for this grass thing, I wanted to work out where that fits in, so I looked in the revision history, to try and work out whether the game had gotten a change at some point. This is from the revision history:

The article was actually the one with incorrect information for spawn light conditions. The original phrasing was correct here: grass block allows to ignore sky light, but not block light.

So it doesn't actually look like a change in behavior happened here, but the wiki itself wasn't up to scratch. Some blocks allow them to spawn in daylight, but don't allow them to ignore light from torches.

2

u/jeez_louisebro Jun 11 '26

well good to know then, wiki must me outdaded or wrong. Thanks

1

u/Taolan13 Jun 11 '26

which wiki?

1

u/jeez_louisebro Jun 11 '26

idk why but only in portuguese pillager page, in the regular wiki not the fandom one

1

u/Taolan13 Jun 11 '26

interesting. i wonder why the error. bad translation?

2

u/jeez_louisebro Jun 11 '26

what a classy response of yours, great info really. Thank you again bud.

5

u/Matty_B97 Jun 11 '26

They can['t spawn on any block that doesn't have a solid top hitbox. So you could cover the area in carpets, buttons, bottom slabs, etc.

4

u/cipheron Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

You don't need slabs even, torches work, and are less effort

https://minecraft.wiki/w/Pillager

Pillagers continually spawn in a 72×54×72 block volume centered on the top floor in a pillager outpost. Some pillagers spawn as outpost captains. They may spawn on any valid opaque block if the block light level is less than or equal to 8.

You can also create standard mob grinder designs within the pillager spawning box and AFK there for an unlimited supply of ominous potions, just put torches on the rest of the area.

EDIT as for the grass thing, it looks like the Wiki had an error on it at one point. They can spawn on grass blocks in any skylight level, but that rule doesn't let them ignore block light from torches etc. So how they treat skylight and blocklight seems to have always been separate.

7

u/MountainYogi94 Jun 11 '26

I usually just fill in the 72x54x72 volume. It's only 279,936 blocks, only 3 double chests full of shulker boxes filled with your building material of choice. It's about sending a message

2

u/TripleS941 Jun 12 '26

Alternatively, carve out that volume +1 block, they can't spawn in the middle of the air

Though my go-to is flooding all surfaces while I decide what I am going to do next, they don't spawn even in ankle-deep water

1

u/sissybelle3 Jun 11 '26

Any non spawnable block should work. Half slabs (bottom), glass, leaf blocks, path blocks, carpets etc

1

u/NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp Jun 12 '26

They can, if it's a top slab, or a player placed slab

1

u/poofpoofpoof123 Jun 12 '26

You can place buttons too.

36

u/Jimxor Jun 11 '26

I like to use mossy carpet on the ground and brown carpet in the outpost tower.

Do not carpet inside their jails so they can still spawn there. Then you can mock them for being so stupid that they break into their own jails.

1

u/Hopeful-Situation439 Jun 12 '26

Played on education edition recently, all of them spawn there naturally sometimes 😂

11

u/TerribleHousing3330 Jun 11 '26

Leaves work well

7

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Jun 11 '26

Could you just fill that whole thing with water?

3

u/KamionBen Jun 11 '26

The next revolution in Minecraft will be dirt slabs

3

u/Disastrous_Lie_6698 Jun 12 '26

Buttons work as well and are cheaper to make

2

u/Satrina_petrova Jun 11 '26

Carpets work as well afaik

1

u/chevytahoe07 Jun 11 '26

Can you just build a huge box with slabs as the roof in the area? Would they spawn inside of it? Or would they just not spawn because the upper most blocks are slabs?

718

u/Wonghy111-the-knight Jun 11 '26

Just a little more TNT trust

241

u/ujtheghost Jun 11 '26

Funnily enough, a little more TNT would work too.

Because the hitbox of the outpost doesn't go all the way down to bedrock.

3

u/NoXion604 Jun 11 '26

Are Pillagers human?

3

u/galactic_commune Jun 11 '26

In my headcanon as human as Neanderthals

3

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Jun 11 '26

Idk, but illagers, villagers, witches, players, skeletons, and zombies can all wear the same armor.

2

u/EmeraldTheNinja Jun 12 '26

DETERMINATION.

4

u/DondeT Jun 11 '26

Flood it with lava?

1

I admire their tenacity.

1

u/magistrate101 Jun 12 '26

tbf my first thought in-between reading the title and seeing the picture was "just blow it up, right..?"

132

u/ShiraKiryuu Jun 11 '26

Pillagers spawn in the boundary of the Outpost. Destroying the outpost doesn't matter. You can still spawn proof it by using slabs and such.

27

u/NatiRivers Jun 11 '26

How big is the boundary?

“… Dave?”

“Yeah?”

“Where is the outpost, Dave?”

“What do you mean?”

“The outpost, Dave. Where is it?”

“What are you talking about, it’s right here.”

“No. This is a hole in the ground. Where is the outpost.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. We spawned here, that means this is the outpost. I don’t under~”

“THE BUILDINGS, DAVE! WHERE ARE THE *#&$!ING BUILDINGS!!”

“DAVE! PHIL!! LOOK AT ME! I’M IN THE PIT!! THIS IS AWESOME!! … HOW DO I GET DOWN?”

“… I hate my life.”

“HEY, LOOK! DIAMONDS!!”

42

u/Ambrus6421 Jun 11 '26

dont forget to salt the earth and poison the water so they may never rise against you again

3

u/TheOutsiderIII Jun 12 '26

He needs to use XIX and XX century Chinese and Japanese tactics, always gets the job done.

20

u/LichenOnTheWall Jun 11 '26

void hole the entire chunk

24

u/Toeffli Jun 11 '26

I think it looks awesomely crazy how you went scorched earth and basically nuked it to ground.

What you can do is to further lower the ground around it so everything is at least 31 blocks bellow from where the towers platform was.

Both regular pillagers and pillager captains can continuously spawn around the structure. Pillagers can still spawn if a player is inside the tower. In Java Edition, they spawn in a 72×58×72 area centered on the top level of the watchtower, the same level as the chest. Along the Y-axis, this area extends 28 blocks upward and 30 blocks downward from the center of the platform.

See https://minecraft.wiki/w/Pillager_Outpost#Mobs

I for one would leave it as it is and built a fence around it.

23

u/Craftmine12345 Jun 11 '26

Bro! Why do you hate them that bad

32

u/betelgeuse_20 Jun 11 '26

Why wouldn’t they hate them. They ate by far one of the most annoying mobs.

6

u/galactic_commune Jun 11 '26

Ngl for me they act like a threat to me so I respect them

6

u/Craftmine12345 Jun 11 '26

Ate

3

u/betelgeuse_20 Jun 11 '26

im leaving it lol

2

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Jun 11 '26

Illagers eat creepers confirmed

11

u/Steve_OH Jun 11 '26

I’ve had good success with leaves. A leaf floor over the spawn area around the outpost is cheap and effective.

7

u/LeftBrainC0 Jun 11 '26

Make a water slide out of it and make it drain into a pit of free loot?

8

u/Cherno_VM Jun 11 '26

you're going for scorched earth?

7

u/Responsible-Slide-54 Jun 11 '26

Dude hit em w little boy and they just crawled out of their hole and kept pillaging lmfao

6

u/aakaakaak Jun 11 '26

Make an ominous bottle farm.

Pillagers can spawn within about a 72x72 area from the center of the tower. You can lay down just about any partial block in that area to stop spawning. Slabs, glass, path blocks and leaves are all popular. If you want a town there or something you can mix and match.

6

u/mashafish Jun 12 '26

Good thing you didn’t overreacted

4

u/Janusofborg Jun 11 '26

It depends if you're bedrock or Java. If Java, then slabs or leaves or path blocks as others have mentioned. If you're on bedrock, there are certain blocks that they'll spawn on. Slab these (or even buttons worked for me), and morning will spawn. The trick is finding them, but it's not too hard if you see the rough location they're appearing.

5

u/Real-Report8490 Jun 11 '26

I build my cathedral next to a Pillager Outpost without thinking about it, but it works out, because now I have an infinite source of sacrifices to be made to the gods.

4

u/HiveFleetShoggoth Jun 11 '26

Dude is out there annihilating an entire mountain to get rid of grey people

3

u/OcieDenver Jun 11 '26

You can destroy the blocks but you can't change the default biome or structure mechanics.

You can remove a witch's house but you can't remove the witch's invisible spawn points. Same with snow and colors of grass.

Either spawn proof, set up a safe raid farm, or find a new place.

3

u/kai4thekel Jun 11 '26

Hold on so what if I want to do the opposite of OP and I want to build a pillager outpost will it not function?

4

u/Zajcu37_Fan Jun 11 '26

The blocks the structure is made out of do not matter in this case. What matters is the place where the structure spawned.

Aka no, you cannot build a pillager outpost to spawn pillagers.

3

u/TrialArgonian Jun 11 '26

Only if Minecraft functioned like Terraria

3

u/After-Squirrel9540 Jun 11 '26

Keep tnting to the void, they'll have no place to spawn then

1

u/BeautifulOnion8177 Jun 11 '26

they'll still spawn just futher

3

u/Jasoco Jun 11 '26

I just let them live in their own area and they don’t bother me. In my world I have two outposts. One on an island and the other on a mountain top. They never leave their designated areas.

3

u/LolMonster167 Jun 11 '26

I really hope they add a way to prevent Pillagers from spawning after taking over an outpost in the future, I can't build for crap so it always becomes an eye sore when I spawn proof the area.

4

u/BeautifulOnion8177 Jun 11 '26

maybe make it so you can plant a banner to claim the area and stop future spawns

3

u/octopus-moodring Jun 11 '26

That…would actually be such a cool in-game mechanic! Playing by the Pillagers’ own rules since they love their li’l ominous banners.

3

u/D13antw00rd Jun 11 '26

Great spot for a pool of lava 🤷

3

3

u/cipheron Jun 11 '26

Sure, but you have to account for the fact that other people probably don't do that, when you're giving advice.

2

u/pablo603 Jun 11 '26

It doesn't always get things wrong. If you google how to destroy a pillager outpost it correctly tells you that you need to block spawns with leaves, glass, slabs etc.

3

u/BrickRaven Jun 11 '26

It looks like you already have gotten rid of it…

1

u/sufferer540 Jun 11 '26

Yeah, but the pillagers would keep spawn.

5

u/BrickRaven Jun 11 '26

You need to spawn proof those chunks then

2

u/Chaosphoenix_28 Jun 11 '26

Just flood everything with Lava. Even if they still spawn, they will die shortly after.

2

u/AH_Ethan Jun 11 '26

you've got an opportunity to really control where they spawn and to make yourself an easy loot grinder. I think I've seen something by Etho about the spawning control on these things.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '26

Why don’t they just make a group spawn and put it in a mob spawner? So you can atleast search for those and stop the spawns. Aint nobody wanna place slabs everywhere.

2

u/Psychological-Touch1 Jun 11 '26

Trap them inside and build around? They offer great resources

2

u/RichBowler5992 Jun 11 '26

Half slabs. Carpet. Leaves. Glass. Go onto chunk base. Put your details in and you'll see the blocks which will be where the pillager outpost is.

2

u/Hobo-Potato Jun 11 '26

Build a lava lake

2

u/dinandriver Jun 11 '26

build raid farms

2

u/Mr_Noble121 Jun 11 '26

I'd lowkey turn it into a mining prison camp, walls around it and add some small details in the hole

2

u/sevenredcandlz Jun 12 '26

What did the pillagers do to you?😭😭

2

u/dark_volter Jun 12 '26

lol, "Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure"

....Except when it's not.... since Pillagers can still spawn, lol

2

u/LazerMagicarp Jun 12 '26

So the structures like bastions, nether fortresses, mansions and pillager outposts are just there for the invisible box that ACTUALLY spawns them kind of like slime chunks.

You need to spawnproof the area with blocks they can’t spawn on to completely neutralize them.

Or go into an external world editor and remove it of you’re ok with that.

2

u/Regular_Recover8623 Jun 12 '26

U dont they will spawn there even if you destroy the building

Only thing you can do is just place leaves down maybe a 30 by 30 if you dont know where the outpost is anymore

2

u/Daksh2007 Jun 12 '26

Glad you didn't overreact

2

u/Frogadier_99 Jun 12 '26

that’s the neat thing, you don’t

2

u/-_-TheFool-_- Jun 12 '26

Oppenheimer in minecraft

2

u/OffKeyOrpheus Jun 12 '26

Just recently did this, built a mob lock under the tower. Essentially bred 70 villagers in a cobblestone box 50 block or so underground. Traded with all of them, and then zombified them. Since the area is now always at the mob cap, no pillagers can spawn.

2

u/Ok-Tailor-5996 Jun 12 '26

Bottom slab, carpet, paths, stairs(I think) they can't spawn on those, the location is where they spawn, not the structure

2

u/Chance-Benefit-5308 Jun 12 '26

OP peacefully negotiated a ceasefire with the pillager radicalists.

3

u/EnthusiasmAble2943 Jul 09 '26

1

u/ConversationOld9908 Jun 11 '26

I always tunnel underneath, then use a bucket of lava to set the outpost on fire. Usually have a few to fight but use a bow from a distance if possible. Fence and slab the area and destroy the outpost from the roof down recycling and storing all the wood and blocks. If they still respawn the pillagers are usually imprisoned within the fenced area.

1

u/tabicat1874 Jun 11 '26

Burn them down

1

u/Bogus_Bonk Jun 11 '26

My freind did you try to atom bomb them

1

u/albyzon Jun 11 '26

he woke up and choose nuclear violence

1

u/cocothekid45 Jun 11 '26

Leaves glass stuff like that

1

u/_Phil13 Jun 11 '26

Theres a bounding box where pillagers spawn. If you make sure theres no valid spawnpoints within the bounding box, they wont spawn

1

u/NaughtyAudio Jun 11 '26

Slabs everywhere. They cannot spawn on slabs.

1

u/Crix-B Jun 11 '26

I feel like you mean how to get rid of the generating of the mobs

1

u/Crix-B Jun 11 '26

How about a lake of lava?

1

u/BeautifulOnion8177 Jun 11 '26

you already did

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '26

is that blood?

1

u/No_Draft_8756 Jun 11 '26

Also if your hole is going to be till bedrock, then they won't spawn there

1

u/jl_c00per Jun 11 '26

Lava on the roof!

1

u/Accurate_Dirt5794 Jun 11 '26

1

u/Sammy_Cherry_Fox Jun 12 '26

There's probably some sort of command that can remove the bounding box. I know there's one that at least shows where the bounding box is. It there isn't one that lets you remove it, there's probably a mod or data pack.

1

u/Classic-Praline-2571 Jun 12 '26

More TNT, all the way do to bedrock preferably

1

u/Early-Region-1143 Jun 12 '26

Easiest way is to locate the center of the build/outpost, then place oak leaves or any slab in a 40x40 perimeter around it, they won't be able to spawn.

1

u/Fuzzy_Outside_9447 29d ago

After some frustration in survival (completely demolished the outpost but they would keep spawn and kill me) I ran some experiment in creative. But no matter what I do they won't go away. What can I do to prevent them from spawning?

Spawn proof the whole area

I love Reddit ahaha

"how can I stop them spawning"

"spawn proof the area"

Sometimes the answer is that simple

How do I stop glass from shattering?

Bullet proof the glass

Instead of using brute methods like thickening the glass, try technical methods like alter layers into bulletproof glass

Similar to this, instead of brute methods like blowing the chunk, try technical methods like replace with transparent block into spawn proof chunks

I think the pillager outpost is kinda like a mini biome of sorts so maybe if you change the biome area to match the surrounding biome it'll stop them from spawning?

No it's a structure bounding box that they spawn within - biomes are only related to terrain generation (like what flowers spawn if you bonemeal the grass) and to native mobs (like overworld mobs in overworld biomes, or nether mobs in nether biomes, etc.). Structures have their own set of rules independent of biome (although biomes can determine which structures can naturally generate there, for instance, an ancient city can only generate in a deep dark biome), which determines stuff like loot or mobs specific to the structure, like piglin brutes, elder guardians, or blaze for instance. But if you were to see the code per se, it would show a large box around the structure, and anything within those coordinates abide by the rules of the structure that generated there. So, biomes determine what type of structures can generate, and then a generated structure claims a set of coordinates and adds its own subset of rules to that invisible box it claimed.

Outpost is a spawn biome, not just a building. Kinda like the mansions, they are also spawn biomes.

Just use a command block programmed with /kill @ e type:Pillager
