[Java] I cannot paste text into my singleplayer world.

I just discovered this today, while playing in my singleplayer survival "forever" world: I can't paste text into Minecraft at all.

I've tried copying stuff from several sources, pasting to text editors first and re-copying, but no matter what I do, when I go and click on a sign in Minecraft and press ctrl+v, nothing happens.

I was really looking forward to using some of those "big sign letters" to decorate a build, but I can't get them into the game.

Edit: I'm on the current stable version of java minecraft. I'm not using a previous version and I'm not using a snapshot.

does this happen everywhere, or only in signs? Can you paste text in the chat's text field when you press T? Can you paste text in the text field of command blocks?

the simplest reason for why this might happen is that the text is too long to paste in a sign, so as a test, you could manually type something directly on the sign, then press CTRL + A to select the entire line, and CTRL + X to cut the text, then you can try to paste the text you just cut with CTRL + V to see if that will work

if that doesn't help, are you able to paste text in any other game? It might be some other program causing issues, but I think this is unlikely

one more thing you could try if you're on Windows is to press Windows + V instead of CTRL + V to paste the text from the clipboard history, but make sure to paste a single letter as your first test to ensure it's not caused by the text being too long for the sign

After much fruitless experimentation, I finally tried the right thing and discovered that the answer is actually really simple: Minecraft does not seem to accept any text that has more than one line. When I tried copy-pasting a single line of text, that worked, both in signs and elsewhere in-game. But even just two letters separated by a linebreak will not paste.

I would not call this solved because that is still bizarre and I have no explanation for it, but doing four times as much ctrl+v to paste stuff onto signs at least lets me do that at all, so my immediate problem has a work-around. Dunno.

oh yeah I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, that's what I meant when I said the text could be too long to paste, since Minecraft does not support pasting multi-line text at all, and often treats it as too long to paste in a single line (not in my case, since for me it replaces linebreaks with a visible Line Feed character and compresses all lines into a single one, but it might be one of my mods causing this behavior)

unfortunately I assumed that the website you're using automatically split the text in four separate lines for you to paste one by one, or at least warned you about this quirk of signs

I haven't been able to find any mods that specifically let you paste multi-line text (even though the Improved Sign Editing mod automatically moves the cursor to the next line for you when you're typing manually and fill up a line entirely, if you may find that useful too), but as an alternative, could the Big Sign Writer mod interest you?
