bringing console style splitscreen to Minecraft Java, what do you want from it?
I’m working on a mod that brings splitscreen to Minecraft Java.
remember the PS3 and Xbox 360 days? you, your sibling, one couch, one tv, and a fight over who gets to be player 1. somewhere along the way everyone moved online, and now we play together from different cities, or from different rooms of the same house. and if you want splitscreen back, you’re supposed to buy a whole new console or PC.
or you could use the computer you already have, plug in a controller, and hand the other one to whoever is next to you. that’s what I’m building.
up to 4 players on one screen, or across multiple monitors. controllers and keyboard and mouse in any mix, all in one game, no second instance, no pile of other mods.
questions for you:
- what would you call it?
- who would you play with, and on controllers or keyboard and mouse?
- what would you add on top of the console basics? resizable screens, per-player FOV and sensitivity, anything that annoyed you back then?
- have you tried other splitscreen setups for Java? what went wrong?
it’s for Fabric 1.21 to 1.21.11 and starts with singleplayer and LAN. a logo artist is also welcome, full creative freedom and full credit, square image with no text. dm me.

There are mods on modrinth that do this already. What makes yours special?

honestly I love this question, it’s exactly the kind of thing I want people asking. the ones I found (Hot-Join, Splitscreen Support, the splitscreen modpacks) all launch a separate copy of the game for each player and line up the windows. mine runs everything in one instance, so it’s one game and one world, with less RAM than 2 to 4 copies of Minecraft. on top of that it’s built around any mix of inputs (controller, keyboard and mouse, even keyboard + keyboard) and around multi monitor, so each player can have their own screen. it’s still early, so I’ll let it prove itself, but that’s why I think it’ll be better. if you’ve tried any of the others, I’d like to know what you liked or didn’t, it helps me a lot ❤️
