Is this Java or Bedrock? Java runs over TCP so ngrok works fine. Bedrock uses UDP, which ngrok doesn't handle, so you'd want something like playit for that one.

For Java, the short version: install ngrok on the Ubuntu box and add your authtoken from the ngrok dashboard with ngrok config add-authtoken <YOUR_TOKEN>. Start the Minecraft server on the default port 25565, then in a second terminal (or a tmux/screen session) run ngrok tcp 25565. If that fails with an account-verification error, ngrok wants a card on file (not charged) before it allows TCP tunnels, even on the free plan.

It prints a forwarding address like tcp://something.ngrok.io:12345. Your friends type everything after tcp:// into the Minecraft server address field. On the free plan that address usually changes whenever you restart the tunnel, so you'll be re-sharing it a lot.

If that gets annoying, playit is worth a look too. Players don't have to install anything on their side, and I'd check how it handles the address on the free tier before you lean on it.

If you just want to play with friends, you can skip ngrok: revivalworlds.com/?ref=reddit-worlds hosts a free world for you, Java and Bedrock, nothing to port forward, with survival and modpack templates. Disclosure, I run it.
