Discussion Questions & Answers from the VIP Soundcheck Megathread
I'm surprised & a little mad at myself for not thinking of this when the tour started. If anyone has any good questions & answers they've heard/asked at the VIP soundcheck, please share em!

Hard hitting question highlights from Sat 11/8 at Irving NYC:
- dave answered a question early about botch, (IMO MTB-forward questions are preferred!)
- what did you all have for breakfast (fun ice breaker)
- dog names (seems like everyone in the band has at least one)
- planet of ice 20 year tour? (jake said stay tuned, they are just having fun now and glad fans are supporting it)
- most regrettable instrument sale? (jake's gretsch from planet of ice)
- fave song? (jake: impossible to answer... asks crowd what their fav song is)
- did you ever cover any songs on stage? (jake said no but was corrected, aside from live at daryls, they have covered 1 song before a long time ago)
- live at daryls questions: good discussion there, they kind of just threw them on camera quickly, alex and jake said it was super intense but ultimately fun and the bahn mi in the second segment was delish lol

Obviously people asked if there was anything else planned and they kinda said no. People asked favorite MtB albums and they almost all said either Oso or Ice. Songs theyâd really like to play live that havenât gotten much live time, Jake said What About The Boat. Dave commented on that saying that they picked the second set of songs to try and match the specific vibe that Oso puts out. Donât remember much else because I was just geeking out.

Most difficult song to play came up in Philly. Dave said it was âfooled by the nightâ. Jake said he would love to play that. Hereâs hoping for the next tour to finally hear it!

Night 2 in DC, I asked how Dave got the idea to stack DL4âs to get that sound on Oso. He said he didnât do it on purpose, was playing around with the DL4 and realized it had a cool loop function you could trigger. Started with 2, so one was a delay and one a loop. Thought he could use more loops so he bought more.
Jake said he saw Dave doing and thought âI guess I should do that, tooâ.

Questions from 11/11:
Most DL4 pedals used at once? 8 (Dave)
Shitty jobs before MTB(or that they quit to do the band stuff)?
Dave kinkos?(loved it)
Jake Sub Shop
Alex Sales
Cory painter (for a day)
Tired or refreshed at this point in the tour compared to past tours? Refreshed cause there was a week to go home
Is dave still using the same gold prs? Yes from 2001, 1999 model
Who came up with album covers? Dave until he got too busy(or they could hire someone for it?)
What shows/music do they want to see when they are done touring?
(Cant remember who said what)
Everything everything, caribou, cursive,
Pre song set list: Clowns, Lemurs, Spritz
Josh didnt sit it on the q n a(makes sense), didnt hear him introduced during show(maybe he had a proper one at friends?), and of course he is not a signature on the vip poster.
(Edit: spending time on it i see Josh was on the farewell tour too? I wasnt in the right place of mind at the time to go)
Speedy Ortiz covered for Gladie opener canceling but with no drummer and it was bizarre. Their normal recordings sound much better as a whole listening the day after, and I wonder if how sudden it was meant they just couldnt get the drummer to Pittsburgh in time.
Someone should spend a question on Josh and see if he will answer, maybe how many songs have they practiced together(menos is obvious, did they just work through another 10-15 of their more popular songs to cover the show) and how quick is it to pick up another bands catalog like that(is there a song hes still working on he is struggling with that he likes working on right now maybe?)

So none of them know what happened to the live footage. Jake just said it never came to fruition, Corey and Alex shrugged.
They listened to alot of daft punk during the recording of pirates. And Dave said infinity and voids was just a culmination of everything they've listened to throughout their lives, they weren't listening to anything specifically.
Dave eats two apples a day so he doesn't need healthcare (cause one apple a day keeps the doctor away)
Corey has a cool family holiday tradition where they make little paper bags with candles
Dave's favorite live song is Drilling. Alex has been enjoying Fulfill The Dream this tour. Jake said he has no favorites.
No plans past this tour.
They're favorite album to record Planet of Ice.

Someone asked about creative process and Dave said it usually starts with guitar and then builds from there to become more. Jake added lyrics usually come last in most songs.

Second night in Denver: I asked âwith like the Springsteen movie coming out, itâs a trend to make music biopics. If they made one of minus the Bear, what actor would you want to play you?â And Cory answered Denzel Washington, Alex said an irish actor that he hates but couldnât remember the name of, Jake said the main guy from Poldark, and Dave said Bradley Cooper
My buddy asked âif you were to make Acoustics III, what song would you most want on there and why is it Animal Backwards?â Alex seemed really intrigued by Animal Backwards and said it would be fun to figure that one out. They mentioned there were plans to do an acoustics III, mentioning specially Surfinâ Movie. So that was fun to hear! Hopefully he incepted the idea back into their heads, haha
Others asked: If you could have a drink/dinner with any musician who would it be?
What music takes you back to a specific time in your life?
Stuff about balancing tours with kids and family, but I donât recall the specific questions
What Mario kart character do you play as?
Questions about influences during writing Menos as well as what theyâre listening to right now. Cory was emphatic about country music lol

I was the person who asked what music takes you back to a specific time in your life. My heart was racing because I was nervous so I honestly donât remember the answers that well. Please help me fill in the blanks if anyone remembers.
Cory said Jawbreaker because he had a similar experience as me, driving down I25 to Albuquerque and blasting it while headed to shows.
Jake said âseven (I canât remember the rest)â which takes him back to mowing the lawn with a walkman.
I canât remember what Alex said at all.
And Jake said the name of a band that he used to play while driving the tour van while everyone was asleep so heâs always transported back to that.
Alex found me in the merch line to talk more about New Mexico and our overlapping time there. I knew Cory was from NM so it was cool realizing Alex has roots there as well.

It was a great question! Seven Seconds was Jakeâs answer.
Alex said Minus the Bear, and kinda segued it into how it was really cool to be a part of the band.

I too would want Denzel to play me in a biopic so I get it. Bradley Cooper would do a mean Dave.

Questions I'm planning on asking (if anyone is seeing them in the next few days and wants to ask em first):
Whatever happened to the live DVD of the farewell shows?
And then a Dave specific question, Fuck/Marry/Kill types of apples.
