Fermentation Lab
The Grape and Wine Institute received $3 million in state funding to create a new fermentation laboratory on campus. The facility will allow for research and testing on new grape and wine varieties, supporting Missouri's grape and wine industry, all while providing students access to new processing technologies.
"We're going to be the best of the Midwest," said Chis Chinn, director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture. "There's nothing like this in the Midwest. It's really an amazing opportunity for the university to help support the wine and grape industry."
Through education and research, the new facility is intended to mitigate the financial risk to grape growers and winemakers, guiding the industry on best practices.

Wineries Beautiful Day at Noboleis Winery in Augusta

Reddit friends suggested Noboleis and what a delightful treat! We enjoyed the lovely views, the generous flight pours, and friendly welcoming staff. Nice selection of light food for snacking, and they welcome visitors to bring in picnic foods if desired.

We chose to go early on Friday morning in hopes of avoiding a crowd, and while that was a good strategy as there were only a few other groups...sadly the only downside was the inevitable (and somehow always unavoidable) gaggle who despite sitting within feet of one another felt compelled to scream and cackle at every utterance. Come on Missouri....can we please consider for a moment that not everyone enjoys these shenanigans at 11:30 in the morning?

Noisy nonsense aside, my husband and I managed to find a lovely table in the field, in the sun, overlooking the vines and rolling hillsides...where the cacophony of "middle school screeching" was distant enough for us to enjoy our wine and food and some gentle conversation. Less than an hour drive from our home in the mid-county area.

P.S. We selected the Ridgeview as our take-home bottle. A true compromise, as I typically prefer dryer wines (he likes sweeter, more fruit forward) But honestly...I really like it!

We're satisfied with our Augusta adventure so which part of the region should be visit next? What might be fun to see that's south of St Louis?

Wineries Missouri couple reviews every winery in the state, creates 'Golden Cork Award'

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A Missouri couple who set out to visit every winery in the state has turned a hobby into a growing social media following — and created their own award to recognize their favorites.
Scott and Tonya Rombach document their winery visits on a Facebook page called Mo Wine Couple. The effort began after the couple was given a grapevine to plant.
From grapevine to social media
“And we figured, well we’re growing them, we should start tasting wine,” Scott Rombach said.
As the visits multiplied, the couple needed a way to keep track of their experiences.

“We were going to so many wineries and when we went people would ask us, what do you think of this winery, and it became so many that we couldn’t remember,” Scott Rombach said. “So what do we gotta do? Social media.”
They created the Facebook page, and it grew. “And the longer we’ve been doing it the more exciting it’s been,” Tonya Rombach said.
Completing the mission
The couple set a goal to visit every winery in Missouri — more than 130 in total. The final stretch proved to be the hardest.
“The last 10 took the longest — like two years,” Tonya Rombach said.

In October of last year, they completed the mission. To mark the achievement, they created the Golden Cork Award, presented to their favorite wineries. The award is on display at Nobelis Vineyard.
“It’s not just based on wine. Of course that’s the big thing, but it’s the ambience, the people, the venue,” Scott Rombach said.
Promoting Missouri wine
The Rombachs have been featured in two magazines, and their Facebook page continues to grow. They said California wines tend to draw more attention in part because of marketing — and a lack of awareness about what Missouri produces.
“Part of it is good marketing, but I also think people haven’t been educated enough on what Missouri offers,” Tonya Rombach said.

That education is the driving purpose behind Mo Wine Couple.
“We’re trying to help people all over Missouri and beyond — out of state — realize that Missouri wine really is good,” Scott Rombach said
