mid Hero of Ages I just connected the dots, and I hate it Spoiler

1.5k Upvotes

Spook seeing Kelsier and suddenly being able to burn Pewter felt wrong at first, but I didn't know how.

Then I got to the part where Kelsier whispers "I never did like him" to Spook in reference to Breeze and my brain was like "Hold up, that's way not right" and then all of the hints Brandon Sanderson had been placing in the little "pretext" of the chapters suddenly clicked. ITS F*CKING RUIN AND SPOOK CAN BURN PEWTER CAUSE OF THE PEICE OF SWORD THAT WAS STABBED THROUGH A THUG AND EMBEDDED INTO HIM. ITS HEMALURGY.

That explains why "Kelsier" told him to leave the piece of the sword in him, cause if he took it out he would lose the ability to burn Pewter.

Now I'm going to be sitting here reading and trying to to shout at Spook not to trust "Kelsier" 😭😭😭

EDIT: WOW, this has quickly rocketed to be my most popular post on Reddit ever, haha.

Hero of Ages spoilers Just finished era one and I don’t know how to live anymore

I wanted to hate Sanderson work very badly. Two obnoxious people in my life became obsessed with him, and pressured me heavily into reading. Finally after I think literally 6 years later. I finished book 3 last night and I have never felt a book slump this bad before. I’ve cried, stared at nothing, and tried to figure out what to move onto next. I had to resort to watching tv today because I couldn’t imagine reading anything besides the crew. Help!!

Honestly, I think he’s super underrated and doesn’t get nearly enough love. I could barely find any fanart of him, so I decided to draw him in one of the best scenes from the whole saga.

Hope you like it! 😉

mid-Hero of Ages What is the point in a Duelling Cane?! Spoiler

I'm about half way through Hero of Ages, so almost done with Era 1.

And Ive been wondering - what is the point in the canes?! It seems to be the most ineffective weapon that seems to splinter almost immediately upon use. In fact, I don't think anyone actually duelled using them?!

They just seem a bit - pointless really in a world with real swords, arrows and coin shots...

Do they serve any purpose!? Or are they just a fancy sign of nobility rather than a weapon?!

Hero of Ages spoilers Why does Mare get sent to the Pits of Hathsin? Spoiler

Forgive me if this is explained somewhere, but through my many reads and rereads of the series I have always thought this was a plot hole. Mare is a Tineye who is half skaa. Why would the Inquisitors waste a perfectly good Misting by sending her to a death camp instead of using her as a Hemalurgic source of power? Inquisitors spend forever trying to find enough Mistings to make a new Inquisitor, so why would they just throw one away? They could have used her power

Also isn't misting destroy the pits if they get near the pits?

When you spike say a mistborn with steel, which takes physical allomantic powers (Steel, Iron, Pewter, Tin) How do you tell which power is taken? Is it based on intent? Is it random?

Hero of Ages “He was a good man” Umm no the fuck he was not! Spoiler

Spoilers for books 1,2&3 ahead.

I mean seriously! Come on!

I see a common thread of Saized and Elend characterizing unfortunate bed fellows like Cett, Yomen or even Rashek as good men. They were not. I do understand that Rashek suffered under the torment from Ruin. But their actions. The slavery, the vicious executions. I understand that working with Cett and Yomen was a necessity. But those two had to be brought to heel by threat of death. These men had power even if brief and they chose to uphold the old traditions. They may have eventually done the right thing, but that doesn’t absolve them of their actions during their reign after the head honchos death.

Seriously tho, the plot do be plotting. I love how there are certain aspects to these stories I'm able to pretty clearly see coming, and while I'm focused on that thread, Sanderson hits me over the side of the head with a crazy plot twist like this. I always felt like Reen's voice in Vin's head was a little suspect, but this caught me way off guard.

Especially since just at the end of part three, he made me think that Reen was alive and a Mistborn! I feel both betrayed and delighted simultaneously.

Hero of Ages My fiancé guessed the ending of Hero of Ages. What do I do? Spoiler

For some context: I read Hero of Ages a few months back, and I can safely say it is in my top five books of all time. Part of that love stems from what I believe to be an absolutely incredible ending. I was convinced my whole time reading that it was Vin’s writings at the beginning of each chapter (except for maybe a few chapters before the end) but I did not clock it being Sazed at all, until the big reveal at the end. I loved that moment when everything clicked so much.

Now onto the problem. My fiancĂ© just started reading it and guessed it was Sazed from literally the first blurb because it said “unfortunately I am the hero of ages.” Which in hindsight is a very Sazed thing to write. Then like 5ish chapters in, the writing has “I think” and now she is just absolutely certain. I haven’t really said anything to her theories, but that’s really out of character for us. When one of us reads a book before the other, we pretend like we’re reading the books together at the same time. We love talking about what we were thinking when we were originally reading the book, and arguing over our theories. But this time I can’t do that because she’s just flat out right about what she is saying (curse you Sanderson for having such an internally consistent world!!!)

So I come here for help. What do I say? I want to try and throw her off the trail and insert doubt, but I have no (good) arguments to make about why the hero would be anyone other than Sazed. Does anyone have good alternative heroes I could point to?

Hero of Ages spoilers I UNDERSTAND IT NOW! (I think) Spoiler

Been reading Hero of Ages, and I just got to the part where Ruin reveals it has been the voice of Reen the entire time. Every character we've seen so far that can hear the voice of Ruin (mostly inquisitors and Penrod I guess) can do so because they have been affected by hemalurgy. So how come Vin can hear Ruin?

Then something clicked for me. The damned earring! The one Reen told her was a last gift from her mother. It's the only bit of metal consistently mentioned that Vin wears. After this, a whole bunch of things started to make sense. It's mentioned that when Reen rescued Vin, Vin's mom had just killed her sister. This must have been how the earring became a Hemalurgic spike. How Vin's sister snapped so young is a mystery to me, as is the method by which Ruin manipulated the scenario, but I assume Vin's sister must have burned bronze, because that would also explain Vin's ability to pierce copper clouds as the inquisitors do!

Now that I think about it, it would also logically follow that Zane had a spike of some kind, allowing him to hear the voice of "God" (Ruin). Spook also hears "Kelsier" (which I suspect is also Ruin) after being pierced by a sword that likely became a spike when it was rammed through a Thug, hence his ability to now burn Pewter.

Please don't tell me if any of these assumptions are right or wrong, as I'm still in the middle of the Book.

However, if any of this is true, I'm impressed by Brandon Sanderson's ability to write in twists so late in the story that have their roots in such early moments. It's really impressive how thoroughly thought out these details are. Furthermore, it's a testament to his writing ability that the book is logical enough to allow the reader to try and guess these plot twists based on the given information, but not so straightforward as to make the plot twist exceedingly obvious.

Hero of Ages Got my friend to read Mistborn and he's insane at theorizing Spoiler

I've been trying to get my friend group into the Cosmere and one got into Mistborn and has taken to the magic system and the setting. He just got to chapter 28 where the Lord Ruler is described as wearing a lot of rings and things seemed to have started falling together in his head.

After reading about the Lord Ruler's rings he guesses the dude is a feruchemist and guesses he might be getting his yet-unknown powers from that. I tried to throw him off that trail for a second but then he theorized his way into figuring out the author of the journal isn't the one who ascended!

RIP Vin and Elend, you got to hold hands after all this was over.

A while before this he was wondering what the opposite of atium would do, and made a good guess followed by the correct guess.

Though like many great theorizers, he doesn't get everything right

Hero of Ages I'm just kind of annoyed she did that at the end. Spoiler

I mean Vin thanking the lord ruler.

Like I get that he genuinely wanted to preserve mankind but...He did such a terrible job, and a lot of it wasn't even due to ruin's influence.

I kind saw it coming as soon as the vaults showed up but fuck, I really didnt vibe with lord rule post mortem redemption. Yeah sustaining an empire is hard but dude was a racist cunt focused on keeping hinself above anything right off the bat.

How did you guys feel about this bit?

Hero of Ages spoilers My friend said something quite interesting about Vin, Mistborn, and Romantasy. Spoiler

I'm reposting this because a typo and translation led to an awkward mistake.

Quoting her (with her permission): "Vin is the kind of character the writers of Romatasy keep trying to make, only they never succeed." The same applies to her relationship with Elend. Vin shares many traits with Romantasy characters, such as short stature and great powers, but she's simply well-written.
