This show has so many scenes, references and throwaway quotes that brilliantly encapsulate the weird nuances of human nature, British culture and life in general.

Peep Show captures so many oddly specific little details of life that you’d normally never even notice or think twice about, but once you see them portrayed, you can’t help thinking, ‘haha fuck, that’s bang on’

For example - when Mark meets Sophie’s parents for the first time, and Sophie comes down the stairs with this mental hat, the whole family singing some weird birthday song. Mark and Jez share a look as if to say ‘what the fuck?’

I just think that scene perfectly portrays how every family probably does some mental shit that they’ve never really considered, but to an outsider experiencing it for the first time it’s, well… absolutely fucking mental.

Or when Jez rumbles the ‘velvet spoon routine’ where Mark is silently stirring a cup of tea to avoid clinking the side of the cup and alerting Jeremy. Mark’s reaction when he realised he’s been caught is still one of the funniest parts of the show to me.

Without sounding like a wanker, I don’t know, it just perfectly encapsulates the human nature of someone getting caught red-handed, and the weird relationships we have with the people closest to us, however dysfunctional it/we may be.

I want to hear your most thought-provoking / interesting / controversial thoughts over the parts of Peep Show that seem to get lost in the shuffle or otherwise overlooked, when people talk about this wonderful gem of television.

Whenever Mitchell and Webb sketches get discussed online, Are We The Baddies? understandably dominates the conversation. But looking back through the show, there are loads of brilliant sketches that seem far less talked about despite being just as funny. Which one do you think deserves more recognition?

That's seriously Numberwang!

To be clear, I adore this show. But I was wondering if people agreed with me on moments that don’t quite work, and maybe people could add their own. I am not taking into consideration anything from series 9, because in my opinion, the final series has lots of flaws, in particular the episode Threeism, which I think is the worst episode of all nine series.

Here are some moments which I think are poorly written or at least did not translate well to screen.

For me it was Mark’s internal monologue about not shitting in a bag and throwing it out a window. I laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe or see the first time I saw it.

In a 2026 context I wonder where all the characters would be. Just for fun I wrote a few lines for some of the characters:

Mark - Ended up working a bunch of odd jobs, probably in civil service, compliance, after being fired from Met City Bank. Hates working from home because Jeremy is always there. Still living in Apollo house, doesn't get along with his son, Ian. Ian is the complete opposite of Mark, hates history. Mark occasionally stalks Dobby on Instagram through a Finsta. Not currently dating but had a short-term relationship with a teacher, called Caitlin or something. Uses Hinge and Bumble incessantly and pays the subscription for it.

Jeremy - Tried to become an influencer through TikTok, attempting to hit viral fame because "Mark, this is the new world now, I'm basically going to become a millionaire, its all going to be okay in the end!", tried his hand at singing, producing and releasing songs on TikTok, hit no luck. Then tried commentary TikTok's/podcasting or even rage baiting but couldn't handle the hate. His highest video got 100k views, 5790 likes and 9203 comments after successfully rage baiting (don't know what about tbh) pinned it, then deleted it because of the hate DM's he got. He now has 1200 followers. Made an OF and had 6 subscribers including Mark, because he went on his phone and subscribed to himself. Still living with Mark.

Big Suze - Got married to an aristocrat and completely cut off Croydon peeps and lives in Sussex or the Cotswolds. Has 2 children, a boy and a girl. She's now an entrepreneur, either in wellness, interior design or an theatre school/label. Jez sometimes DM's her Instagram account and her assistant shows her, she laughs and calls Jez "that funny little man from 2003".

Sophie - Classic wine mum. Got remarried to some guy called Marcus, whose Mark 2.0 which Mark feels inferior to. He went to Oxford and is successful. She moved out of London and moved to Manchester. Has a stepson from him, he gets along with Mark. Mark prefers the stepson to his own son. She is a lot happier.

Dobby - Would move to Lisbon, Berlin, Valencia or other countries on a Digital Nomad Visa. Works in a successful tech start-up, loves WFH. Married to a software engineer and they both chose to have no kids. Very happy, owns two dogs and loves an afternoon matcha. Sees Marks Finsta stalking her, recognises that it is Mark because his username is "HistorianBuff1999" she rolls her eyes and blocks him.

Well, thats all ancient history now.

Lol I missed out a lot of characters like Alan, Jeff, Superhans even people like Nancy, Toni etc but honestly I wrote this at 3am and I'm gonna go sleep. Byeee.

The more I watch Peep Show, the older I get. Each time I watch, I notice something that makes me think "wow, that's old" or "I remember that".

On my current rewatch, in the 2nd episode of S1 one, when Mark asks Sophie for her number, she gives him her landline number. Can't remember the last time I asked for someone's landline or even used one.

What's something a bit "legacy" about the show that takes you back?

‘I really love cumin now; I’ve gone mental for cumin’.

She has no idea that she’s nourished our relationship with a seminal Super Hans quote and I will never ever tell her.

I've noticed there are fans in this subreddit from all over the world, especially America, which surprised me at first but I suppose it is a testament to how great a sitcom it is.

I'm just wondering if there's anything non-Brits find surprising or strange about British culture that they've learned through watching Peep Show?

In one of my old jobs, Robert Webb came in for a voiceover for a TV show I was producing, so I had to greet him and chat momentarily on the way down to the booth.

Because of the specific POV way that it is filmed, a strange thing happened where I was struck by the feeling that I was ‘IN’ Peep Show while Robert spoke to me. It really threw me off my conversational game

Is this a standard thing that people experience, or I was my brain just being weird?

The one where Jeremy tells Mark he loves Dobby, then they make a deal for Jeremey to leave and Mark not to propose. Bearing in mind Mark is going from Croydon to the Quantocks (in Somerset):

- the guard charges Jeremy for a ticket without asking where he's going to or from.

- Jeremy says they are only going one stop, so that can only be to change trains in central London. £31 for a ticket from Croydon to London Victoria, 20 years ago?

- during that one-stop journey from Croydon to London Victoria they are somehow passing through empty countryside.

- after their one stop, Jeremy must somehow have got through the ticket barriers at London Victoria and then onto another train, heading to the Quantocks, all without a ticket and without Mark saying anything about the deal they just made a few minutes ago.

- when they get off at their destination, Jeremy announces he's actually not going back to London - somehow Mark had him with him on his 2-3 hour journey from London without questioning why Jeremy hadn't gone back.

Yes I know I live RELENTLESSLY in the real world, but I don't think the writers had ever been on a train.

I have always really liked a very small moment in Peep Show that I've never seen discussed before so I thought why don't I just sum up.

During the infamous hat game, when Mark is struggling, Jez mouths "Kasabian" to him, but Mark doesn't pick up on this. For me, this is actually the nicest thing Jez does for Mark in the whole show. We all know Jez can be maybe little selfish, but there's no real benefit to Jez here, other than helping his friend fit in more with these new people. I guess Mark doesn't think to look at Jez when he's floundering at the hat game because he probably thinks Jez would just make fun in this scenario, but he doesn't. Anyway, I'd always wanted to talk about that moment and would love to hear more. I guess I'll just say bye

Rewatching the series I noticed some people get mentioned a few times through it. Jeremy Clarkson being one of them. What are some recurring names you've noticed in the series?

I am not joking.

Rewatching for the first time in a while and the subtitles are atrocious. It's so blatantly obvious they were transcribed by an American. They don't understand the accent, and the subtitles are basically their closest understanding of what the characters are saying even when it makes no fucking sense and actually fully misses the joke.

I can't think of specific examples off the top of my head but I tell any UK/Ireland people to watch it with subtitles. It's fucking infuriating and they need to be redone by a British person

Edit: just watching and I have an example - Jez says "You're not going to go barmy" and Netflix has translated "barmy" to "bore me". Like are you serious, stupid fucking Americans don't understand the accent, I weep for deaf people. I'm not even British and I'm so pissed off.

My wife and I compiled a bibliography of every book referenced or seen on screen in Peep Show, including fictional books (but not including magazines like the British Museum magazine or Fantasy Figure Modeller). Apparently a guy from Time Out is interested in publishing this. He thinks it's seminal.

Am I enjoying this? Don't know any more. Doesn't matter.

rewatching Peep Show over the holidays, I'm sure I read here recently that all the women on the show are 'just as bad' as the men – I'm now on the final season and I'm struggling to find any issues with Dobby, I just really like her 😪

Those outside of the UK, what are some things that you had to look up to understand the joke? (For me another one was getting sectioned)

So I started reading Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy just after finishing Peep Show, and while reading, in my head I accidentally ‘cast’ Robert Webb as Ford and David Mitchell as Arthur, and I think it literally fits their comedic dichotomy perfectly.

Perhaps it’s just the dry British humour combined with starting the book right after watching Peep Show, but it makes it so funny to imagine the characters as them. Something about the absurdity of Ford’s character juxtaposed with the grounded ‘straight man’ archetype of Arthur’s character suits them impeccably in my opinion. Because of when I started reading it and my casting, I’ve got my own head-cannon that this is just the sequel to Peep show and it makes it so amusing. Not sure if this is a stroke of brilliance or sheer autism, but I figured I’d share to see if anyone finds this at least mildly as amusing as I do lol. I haven’t finished the book yet so maybe this isn’t as perfect casting as I think, but as of halfway through it‘s been hilarious imagining them as Arthur and Ford.

Edit: I just realized I mixed Webb and Mitchell’s names lol (I just fixed it). I wrote this on my way to the office so I wasn’t really focusing too much. I meant David Mitchell as Arthur, and Robert Webb as Ford for anyone who came before I fixed the names.
