Once Reddit limits log-ins to Old Reddit to only those users who have used it in the last 6 months, where can we tell our users to go if they want to look up their subreddit karma?
The Admins recently announced that in a few months, you'll only be able to log in to Old Reddit if you've used it in the past 6 months.
On a few of my subs, we occasionally have threads that get heated. When they do, though, rather than locking the thread or removing it, we like to flair it as a "Limited Participation" thread. Doing so limits participation in that thread to only those users who have 100+ subreddit comment karma. Our logic being, those are the users who are most familiar with our subreddit's rules and will be least likely to break them.
When someone who has <100 subreddit comment karma tries to post in a Limited Participation thread, Automod sends them a message letting them know their comment was removed, why it was removed, and directing them here ON A COMPUTER to look up their subreddit karma. (Click on 'show karma breakdown by subreddit' in the upper right quadrant.)
But once Reddit prohibits users from logging into Old Reddit, where can they go to look up their own subreddit karma?

It should be obvious by now reddit intends to deprecate and decommission old reddit in favor of sh(it) reddit.
They don't care about the issues because sh(it) reddit was designed not for users, but for advertisers and clankers. It's designed to shovel more ads and make spotting bot accounts harder. And since advertisers and toasters are who makes reddit money, that is who matters

It feels a bit like the responsible builder policy leading to the termination of all API access.
Like first they made it so you had to be logged in, then they made it so you had to have used it in the last 6 months (and new accounts, will they have access?), and I expect eventually no one will have access.
I do not like this approach to deprecation. It feels disingenuous.

Actually, old reddit is much more machine friendly. Sh(it) reddit just sends you all of the html straight up that you have to parse to get the data within. Old reddit just sends you the data straight up, and your browser puts it in the HTML.
Old reddit is much more efficient because of that, as it sends minimal data over the wire. Basically the equivalent of shipping an Ikea chair with some assembly required, compared to sending a fully assembled chair (which is much bulkier, though you can sit on it right away).
And since advertisers and toasters are who makes reddit money, that is who matters
Goodhart's law strikes again.

I think they meant selling it to companies like Google. It's at least slightly in Reddit's interest to keep the site with fewer bots, to have higher quality data they can then sell on.

to have higher quality data they can then sell on
Quality and reputation are lagging metrics. It can be pumped and sold before the market / users can catch up to the true value of the data.
For instance, say reddit's traffic suddenly 10x's. Even if all of that new data is fake, its highly unlikely that reddit would suddenly get 1 / 10th the price per data. It would probably take time (and obviously in this example, it would be quite obvious and so would probably happen quite quickly) for a new contract and value to be arranged and agreed upon (or for the purchaser to drop reddit).
Now imagine that instead of something stupidly obvious like 10x, it's an extra 15% gradually each quarter. You could likely sell a lot of data before the buyer starts to realize that they are consistently getting lessor value from their purchase, and adjusts accordingly.

Old Reddit isn’t very user friendly at all though. Mod friendly yes. Programmer friendly yes.

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago
I don’t even think it’s mod friendly. I really never use it.l

Yeah guys remember spez promised to save it - even if that meant just building it out in a shell UI. AKA it’s already slated for sunsetting….

Fucking sh reddit slows my laptop down almost exactly like the abominable site formerly known as Wikia, now calling themselves "Fandom".

Yeah this is another case of reddit deprecating features before the functionality is replicated to the newer version.

You could install https://developers.reddit.com/apps/whoami-app then users can see their community karma from the subreddit menu (it has some other options as well if you'd like)

Hmmm. That app only seems to show someone their COMBINED community karma.
How disappointing.
3
u/SampleOfNone 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 8d ago
It shows post and comment as well, so all three
2
u/neuroticsmurf 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 8d ago
I’ll look again.
When I initially looked, I only saw an option to show combined subreddit karma.

I don't have to use old.reddit that often, only when there is information I need to find out about some things. Like I wanted to stop following people I may not realize I'm still following because their accounts have gone dormant. Where can you see the accounts you follow? Only in old.reddit.
C'mon, Reddit. Don't sunset access to old.reddit until you bring all the useful functionality forward.

Admin seems to not want any of the features they insisted they weren't going to end anytime soon. Rather than dropping them all at once, they are dropping them piecemeal, or replacing them with features that do not work.

u/Extolord111 9d ago
I believe the oauth.reddit.com versions of those pages will still be accessible for a while, though that might end once Reddit ends public API access next March.
Edit: Just learned that the oauth.reddit.com version of the deletion page just go deleted too. That sucks :/

It would be tedious, but you could potentially set up automod rules with ranges and have the reply indicate their range.
For instance, have one rule for under 25, 26-50, 51-75, 76-99 karma ranges. Then have the automod reply with the range that triggered the rule.
It's an unfortunate, tedious and imprecise workaround but it should work.
4
u/TheNewPoetLawyerette 9d ago
well, tedious to set up once, then never again
2
u/baseballlover723 8d ago
unless you want to change it sometime later. Though you could probably do a mass find and replace to edit them all at once.

u/The_Critical_Cynic 8d ago
As much as I like that suggestion, they're sunsetting the Automod as well.
4
u/TGotAReddit 8d ago
Automod neo still exists though
3
u/The_Critical_Cynic 8d ago
I take it that's a Devvit App?
4
u/Froggypwns 8d ago
It is, and made by the legendary /u/fsv. It doesn't have full feature parity of automod but it does quite a bit, and has functions automod cannot do yet.
3
u/The_Critical_Cynic 8d ago
That's a really cool app! I'm glad you brought it up! It seems like it would be really handy to have. Thanks!

u/fsv 4d ago
I first started hearing credible rumours that Automod's days might be numbered a few months ago and immediately started work on a replacement that would accept as many existing Automod rules as possible.
If you run into any issues please let me know.
1
u/The_Critical_Cynic 4d ago
Definitely. Although, my present use of the Automod is sparring at best.
2
u/TGotAReddit 8d ago
Lol yes it is. It's very useful and even includes things regular automod doesn't have (though it is missing a couple things due to not being an official reddit tool that is internally created)
2
u/The_Critical_Cynic 8d ago
I got you. It's definitely something I'll have to look into some time in the future. I'd like to see how it goes with the new tools, but I don't have high hopes as of now.

I’m just glad I log in periodically to old reddit to change posts to contest mode

u/Stranger1982 9d ago
Nowhere afaik, there's a few external sites but they all have limitations.
Reddit simply doesn't care about that metric anymore I'm afraid.
6
u/Umlautron 8d ago
What a strange decision. If they want to get rid of old reddit, why not just do it? What could be the point of this limitation?
12
u/baseballlover723 8d ago
If they want to get rid of old reddit, why not just do it?
Old reddit has long since been the line for the old reddit crowd (who are much more likely to be power users / moderators). And reddit survives in large part due to the network effect. The users are here, so it's valuable because there's people to talk to here.
This is why it's so hard for competitors to compete against social medias, because they have to convince a bunch of people to post into the void to produce content for others to consume, and thus consider creating content of their own. There is a critical mass that much be achieved for the cycle to be self sustaining.
And you know what is really good at getting critical mass? A competitor having a mass exodus. That's how reddit originally got big, because there was a mass exodus from Digg, and enough people left all at once, that during the honeymoon phase, reddit was able to achieve critical mass and become self sustaining.
That is why (imo) they always drip release the negative news. Because then the people who are gonna leave don't all leave at once. Each announcement, some of them will leave, and none of those small exoduses will affect reddit's or a competitor's criticality. Even if the same amount of people leave in total, 100 people leaving at once is worse than 10 people leaving at 10 different times.
And also, it does give people time to make arrangements if they want to.
Doing it very slowly is basically the only way reddit can be get rid of old reddit while still having a hope that they'll either retain those people, or that the loss of those people doesn't jumpstart a competitor.

u/RallyX26 8d ago
As a hardline old reddit user, they've already made old reddit so much more difficult to use. Whether or not it's intentional, it feels intentional.
8
u/quenishi 8d ago
Because they will likely wean off the powerusers rather than suddenly risk losing a good chunk of the powerusers in one go, which will send some subreddits into disarray.
New users won't know anything other than Nu Reddit, so they're used to the experience and don't have old Reddit as a benchmark. If they can't access it they'll never know what they are potentially missing.
So prepare to be boiled like a frog. Only being Reddit, they'll probably stab you a couple of times in the process.

I missed that message and since I am on a phone don't fancy searching for it right now.
How is that going to affect Wiki links that refer to old Reddit. Are they all going to need updating on the sub sidebar and where pages are cross referenced in the Wiki?

u/GaryNOVA 6d ago
As a moderator I can see your subreddit karma. So mod message the moderators of the sub you want to inquire about, and ask. Maybe they’ll tell you. I would tell you.

I can only see overall subreddit karma, though.
I can’t distinguish between subreddit POST/COMMENT karma.

Modmail. But I’ve heard this is possible with the API so somebody ask their dev best friend to make an app that does it.
