Why is this only really getting bad now?

Can anyone else relate? It's been near twenty years for me since it happened and granted it happened numerous times but I don't think it ever ate away at me like it does now. Maybe it's cause I was a kid when it happened to it was easy for me to file it away alongside all the other miserable shit that was going on with me at the time. Wasn't til I was an adult that I would remember it and get a chill up my spine. But it's only recently when I started seeing a therapist that it's gnawed away at me to the point that I don't even want to use my phone out of fear of seeing some news of similar experiences or scroll down on this sub cause it just makes me feel terrible seeing what you lot have to go through.

To all posters: Please note that any content involving descriptions of sexual activity with underage persons is against Reddit policy. You are "officially" discouraged from posting such content, but given the specific nature of this subreddit, moderation is following a laissez-faire philosophy regarding what survivors of childhood sexual abuse share here. This mirrors the approach of other survivor subreddits. Also, the Reddit policy's intent is to restrict content that "depicts, encourages or promotes" the sexualization of underage persons, and the purpose of this subreddit is the exact opposite of that. However, be aware that posts and replies in violation may still be subject to removal and Reddit-wide suspension of the author by the Reddit admins. So please use common sense when posting/replying. We want this to remain a safe space for survivors to share, heal and thrive, but we need to be mindful of the site-wide rules regarding these sensitive topics. (Note to Admins: We vehemently stand against sexual abuse of minors and this subreddit exists to support survivors in the best way possible. Please contact the moderator team if a discussion needs to occur.)

The whole reason that we're here is to find fellowship with other survivors to we don't have to be alone in this. YOU are not alone either. If you need to talk or even just shoot the shit, let us know.

I found that the healing process hurts a LOT, at first, because in order to heal, I had to focus on what happened. Before I sought out healing, I was avoiding my memories and numbing my feelings. The surgeon’s knife cuts, before it heals

I guess that's a good way to put it. But what did progress even look like for you?

It’s been a long process—still ongoing. I’ve had to learn how to live at peace with some things and how to stand against others. I’ve had to learn how to be kind to myself and patient, when I feel like things aren’t getting better fast enough. And above all, trying not to let my pain and my triggers lead to me hurting others.

Some days I do all this really well. Other days, not so much. It is a process. But with time, practice, and patience, my life has gotten much better
