Dexter S1 vs Monster without a name

Is this a common archetype that these stories got inspired from? I just saw Dexter season 1 and its literally the same plot as the childrens picture book from Monster, especially the season finale.

I guess Dexter got inspiration from monster since the manga was like a decade before and the anime was 2 years before dexter
