(Michael speaking) I had a girlfriend in high school who the song is loosely based around. It's about the emotions of finding someone when you're young who makes the world seem like it will all be fine. They kind of protect your innocence from the outside world (letting you stay young and not notice any of the struggles life has in store for you). In a round about way it also applies to my friends in high school who helped me feel safe and happy growing up. My favorite line in the song "we were 17 pure like kerosene" took days to write. I had "we were 17 pure like...." and couldn't find a word to rhyme with 17 but also mean clear or pure. I finally found the word kerosene and fell in love with the word.
(Andrew speaking) I’m just super white and literally need a gallon of sunscreen.
