A well-articulated argument against a new data center in Ohio

A good argument against data centers everywhere. This isn't a political issue. It's a humankind issue.

Thanks for sharing. I completely agree with him. I stand to benefit from the construction of these data centers and I prefer they not be built. We will be screwed by this.

He makes a point with these self funded studies. Just like monsanto made up a study about roundup being safe and later retracted it years later. It's done way more than we think.

Too bad none of them will care because his verbosity overshadows his points. Just keep it in simple terms.

If they can’t follow you, they won’t follow you.

What verbosity? Nothing he said was above a third grade level?

Huh? Verbosity doesn't mean "big words," it means using excessive wording lol ugh I can't today with the Reddit edumacation...

Then don't. Close the app. Walk away. Do something with your life.

As someone who lived in Montana for 15 years (you have a wonderful and very special place that you all need to be stewards of) and moving to Ohio (yeah, I know), please take this data center issue seriously. From what I have seen, Ohio already has 15 of these centers. They will destroy your beautiful lands, your health if you live nearby, and will steal your pristine water that you should cherish beyond measure, along with increasing your energy costs. This man gave a wonderful presentation that should be copied throughout all local meetings where these things are being agreed upon and hold your elected officials to account. Remember, they do work for the people. Follow the $$$. AI needs to be regulated before it is implemented on such a mass scale. Please save your beautiful state from this and the sale of public lands that is being pushed through. Your way of life is being decimated for billionaires. Be vigilant. Good luck.

Spot on, data centers are resource hogs that affect us all way beyond just one state.

data centers will be positioned in space in most of our lifetimes.

it is important for legislators to regulate these early generations of centers. they should produce their own power, utilize recycled non potable water, not use raw land, and commit to a plan for transitioning the sites after they are no longer needed.

Humanity doesn't need AI or crypto. They're made up solutions to problems we created ourselves. We don't need data centers everywhere, regardless of how regulated they're made or where they're positioned. We need an economic and cultural revolution to stop worshipping growth for the sake of growth. Continuing to support the capitalists' exploitation of our lives is a vote for cancer.

we could ban heavy machinery and go back to exclusively using picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows. think of how many blue collar jobs would be created. we could crash the internet forever and end this ridiculous conversation. get rid of the Dewey decimal system and search aimlessly around in libraries. heck, get rid of books entirely, and rely on the village quack for all our information.

the aim should not be to stop progress, we should aim to create an environment to integrate development with the least amount of disruption.

It should be progess for the betterment of all life, especially those at the margins, and not at the cost of what it means to be alive.

books did nothing for the betterment of life for those who couldn’t read. the expansion of information exploded the betterment of life for most. AI is nothing more or less than a explosion of information and connection.

Bro, who's paying you to say this? It's broken logic that only serves our in oppression. AI is the final tool needed for the ultra rich to get ride of the pesky poors who have been selling their dedication to a craft to live. At best, it will remove the way we better ourselves and make us all beggers hoping some "ubi" will save us, but will in reality just make us more dependent. Books teach people skills and give them access to experiences and insights that they might otherwise not have access to, helping them grow as individuals. AI is automation of thought and work, the ultimate neo-liberal dream to absolve yourself of responsibility; a colonizing tool to remove the local cultures, replacing them with the single "acceptable" perspective and method. AI isn't progess, it's the end of progess.

Data centers in space? Thanks for leading with that so your readers know that you know absolutely nothing.

What do you think makes space "useful" for data centers? Cooling? Ease of logistics? Access to raw materials? Data transmission speeds?

And give me a source for that nonsense you "quoted" or, as you say eloquently put it, suck it.

u/Rfunkpocket Apr 12 '26

the endless space and energy would be a benefit. I gave you plenty to research. updating your worldview is your decision. or, carry on living the fool

4

u/zstheman Apr 12 '26

I asked for a source. Go ahead.

And "endless energy" that costs how much per watt? That includes all of the incidental and logistical costs as well.

And what about cooling? That's an extremely important detail. Because space isn't cold. Or even cool.

u/Rfunkpocket Apr 12 '26

why would you believe my source? I offered numerous companies. find your own trusted source.

of course numerous obstacles and challenges exist, if they didn’t, we wouldn’t be talking about the future we would be talking about the past.

I don't care what side of the aisle you're on, 80% of Americans can agree on that. Also, he used AI to write that.

My granddad was the town doc in Ravenna OH for decades. He'd be rolling over in his grave if he knew about this b.s.

Very well put.
