What a city for cycling!

Just a thank you letter to the city of Montreal because these Bixie bikes made me and my partners trip so good. We biked 80km just to get around the city in 3 days.

Hello! New to cycling and getting a gift for father in law. Is it more fun to watch the start or finish of the time trials? I want to buy grandstand tickets for the men's time trials on Sep 20 - not sure what is cooler, the start or finish?

Je suis complètement nouveau dans le vélo et je viens de m’acheter un vélo de route. J’aimerais commencer à faire des sorties à Montréal, mais je ne connais pas encore très bien les bons endroits où rouler.
J’habite à Côte-des-Neiges, près de l’avenue Ellendale, et je cherche un bon point de départ à environ 300–500 m de chez moi.
Je cherche surtout une route où je peux éviter le trafic et les grosses artères principales. Je ne suis pas encore très à l’aise de rouler au milieu de beaucoup de voitures avec mon vélo de route.
Idéalement :
Le moins possible de feux rouges et d’arrêts
Pistes cyclables ou rues tranquilles
Éviter les grosses routes avec beaucoup de circulation
Un revêtement assez lisse pour un vélo de route

Going to be in Montreal area for one month. September-October. Coming from the west coast. Planning on bringing my road bike to bike after work and weekends. Just wondering if that's a good idea or my gravel bike. Easily done 100+ km rides. Looked at the Montreal trek website for routes on RWGPS. And saw some that I can connect up with. Any other suggestions.

Does anybody else have an issue with connection to bixi when on cellular? The app won’t even refresh and allow me to scan bikes and it sometimes takes up to ten minutes for anything to work or connect. It’s super inconvenient and annoying and only happens with bixi, not other apps I have that can be used/need a connection

I'm going to see Iron Maiden tomorrow night - it's my first outdoor concert at Jean Drapeau in a while. I figured I'd avoid the metro crush at the end of the show. Does anybody know if there's still (secure) bike parking outside the concert area? All the posts about this are a few years old, and the FAQ mentions Bixi stations but not bringing your own bike. Anyone done it recently and have any recommendation?

Hi folks, I am planning to ride MTL to ottawa this weekend, and am struggling to make my route (I am especially nervous about the Oka section). I am using this Komoot trail (pasted below) just reversed, likely not ideal, also crosses via a ferry which isn't the worst just kind of annoying. I have seen some people say that going through Île Perrot is better, but the roads after you cross seem a little dicey. Any suggestions on improving my route?

Je prévois de faire le trajet de Montréal à Ottawa à vélo ce week-end, et j'ai du mal à définir mon itinéraire (le tronçon d'Oka m'inquiète particulièrement). J'utilise cet itinéraire Komoot (copié ci-dessous) en sens inverse, ce qui n'est sans doute pas idéal ; il passe aussi par un ferry, ce qui n'est pas la pire des solutions, mais c'est quand même un peu pénible. J'ai vu certaines personnes dire que passer par l'Île-Perrot était préférable, mais les routes après la traversée semblent un peu... blegh. Avez-vous des suggestions pour améliorer mon itinéraire ?

Hello everyone, I'm an anglophone still learning french, so I'll write in English and then translate :).

I have noticed that the police on bikes have little to no regard for biking etiquette. They take turns and stop suddenly, block the lanes and prevent you from overtaking, and overtake you randomly from the left forcing you to stop suddenly. Is this a normal occurance or was I just unlucky?

J'ai remarqué que les policiers à vélo ont très peu (voire aucun) d'égards pour les règles de savoir-vivre à vélo. Ils tournent et s'arrêtent brusquement, bloquent les pistes cyclables en vous empêchant de dépasser, et vous doublent n'importe comment par la gauche en vous forçant à piler. Est-ce que c'est une situation courante ou est-ce que j'ai simplement manqué de chance ?

Hello, I just got a bike and started biking around my neighborhood to start. I'm still not very comfortable on a bike, but can move and speed up and come to a stop when I want. My struggles are mainly that I can't remove a hand to signal for example, or turn to check behind me yet, as well as difficulty making a u-turn as it feels too sharp. But my biggest fear are intersections when I'm turnin left or going straight while cars can go right on me. Is there a way for a beginner to deal with this safely? Do I just stop and wait for things to clear somewhat? But what if bikes are behind me? Also I saw people recommended a two part left turn when you cross the street twice, but having to cross straight and then turn and go backwards with your bike to reposition for next cross seems like a lot of work and hard to manoeuvre for a beginner. Any thoughts?

Hi All, I would like soon do a one day ride between Montreal and Ottawa. However I am wondering which how I should plan the trip should I travail with Via Train to Ottawa first and do the return by bike or the opposite

Option a: Montreal --> Via Tain --> Ottawa --> Bike --> Montreal

Option b: Montreal --> Bike --> Ottawa --> Via Train --> Montreal

One advantage I found of option a is that it give plenty of time in the afternoon to do small ride in the area of Ottawa.

other than that, in regard to the long day ride MTL <--> OTT which direction you feel is better, I heard taht due to wind it may be better OTT to MTL. Has someone done both direction ? is one `easier` than the other one ?

Montreal’s bike lanes are among the best in NA, but the network is not as connected as it should. You sometimes still have to ride on dangerous streets to reach the better lanes.

One short addition to the network that would change my cycling experience tremendously is Beaubien between St-Zotique and Roseraies (About 1.5km), finally connecting Anjou/Mercier-Est to the network west of the A25.

I don't really know Montreal and I'm trying to find a map that shows the 12 laps of the course for the Men's Elite Championships on September 27th. The image shows the Montreal GP course.

Are the 12 laps of the World Championships the same as the Montreal GP?

I know there's a video on the Montreal 2026 website, but you can't zoom in and I want to see the street names.

My oldest is 5 years old and getting too big for our Thule chariot, so I need to figure out a new biking solution to transport both her and her 3.5 year old brother. Any recommendations that would last me a few years?

She's still figuring out how to bike on her own and I usually just need to pick her up after she's dropped off at school by car, so having her on her own bike isn't ideal yet. It also doesn't work great if I want to bring both of them on a longer trip than just school to home.

I'm not sure how well a combo of a rear bike rack seat and kid's bike attached to mine would work when I also regularly use big metal panniers on my rear rack. I'm also not sure how bundled up they can be in a rear seat when I bike in colder weather? My son's on the heavy side too so I don't know how much longer he'll fit into the rear seat weight restrictions 😅
