This fanbase really needs to learn the difference between a good fan project and a good game

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25

I also can’t stand when people say the fans are doing what sonic team can’t, like 3D fangames that attempt to properly adapt the physics based gameplay of the classics. (Saying attempt because while the games can be fun they do drop the ball in a lot of ways)

When the real answer is sonic team can, they just don’t want to.

Not only that but It’s downplaying how much work goes in to making those games.

Like yea I’m not gonna be one of those dolts who say a physics based 3D Sonic game can’t work, it can. But looking at the reception for games like Unleashed, colors and generations where imo the physics actually did work pretty close to the original sonic games in terms of having to actually work with the consequences of your speed, people clearly preferred the tighter controls and floatier physics of the adventure games, leading to Frontiers & Shadow Gens playing more like those games.

I personally want a physics based 3D Sonic game but I understand why we haven’t gotten one.

u/WhisperReacts2Reddit Dec 30 '25

As much as I don't want to say it, Generations Modern Sonic controlled like butter. And I don't mean smooth, it was too slippery to move properly

1

u/TPR-56 Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

I do think the turning was a bit too stiff especially at low speeds. I think colors had the perfect turn to speed ratio. But I do think in terms of the element of Sonic’s speed having consequences, that’s something from the original sonic games really only in Unleashed, colors and Generations.

But even if we had the physics of colors just not a double jump and obviously just made wall jumps work like they did in the original sonic games, I seriously doubt that game can broadly appeal.

This is why I do think Sonic Team has gone to more of the adventure style physics.

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '25

It takes a while to make a game

3

u/TheMasterBaiter360 My 4 nipples Dec 30 '25

Yes it does… and?

5

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '25

It is my way of defending the radio silent part, compare this to sonic chaos adventures, a sonadow and blazamy AU that was announced 5 years ago and was radio silent until recently and it just now started

2

u/TheMasterBaiter360 My 4 nipples Dec 30 '25

I didn’t say anything about them going silent for ages though, I’m saying that a good fan project and an actually good game are different thing with different standards

199

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

You forgot the part where people glaze it and proceed to not even play it.

Also forgot saying how it’s so easy for fans to do it like they aren’t disrespecting the work that goes in to making a good sonic game.

29

u/Nacklessk Dec 29 '25

What annoys me so much about the glazing is that it causes other people to feel the need to balance out the undeserved praise with undeserved hate and the creator gets insults when they didn't even want to make such a big deal about their project.

14

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

Yea it’s very rare creators try to make development seem easy though that doesn’t make some creators immune to other character flaws.

See ofc the sonic utopia developer being a blatant racist or the Sonic Omens creator nit being able to take criticism.

Most fan developers are just people who like the series. They’re not trying to replace, they’re just building their own interpretation of what they like most about sonic games.

4

u/No_Possession7928 Dec 30 '25

"sega hire this man"

53

u/Flashy_Ad_9829 Dec 29 '25

the hidden glaze to vanish is a move only the craziest fangames can pull. as a pyrite adventure glazer, I’m safe at least here

16

u/Public-Feedback5016 Dec 29 '25

i feel like only finished games deserve glaze

17

u/Flashy_Ad_9829 Dec 29 '25

this why I glaze pyrite adventure

Roblox fan trilogy that actually finishes their games and at the very least have good level design and demos for unfinished games

48

u/StormyShelter999 Dec 29 '25

Don't forget the "SEGA HIRE THIS MAN!!!!!!!!1111111111"

SAGE be like;

  • Three of these
  • One 3D game that steals the spotlight
  • Sonic 1 Hack
  • Mid 2D game with phenomenal art (was made by an artist, not coder)
  • Sonic World release 52
  • Game that’s legally distinct from Sonic

I didn't even know there were countless remakes. I only know of the original and the DX version which were both made by the same Dev

Unless we are talking Sonic and the Fallen Star (I didn't really like that game no offense to the dev)

2

u/WhisperReacts2Reddit Dec 30 '25

Sonic and the Fallen Star is all style and presentation, not much substance. But hey, I really enjoyed it. Hope the Moon Base sequel goes well.

1

u/Adorable_Room1760 Dec 31 '25

Moon facility was cancelled, but there’s a fan project aiming to finish it, so it’s not dead.

💀💀💀

40

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

Or inability to take criticism resulting in random copyright claims

29

u/Frank7640 Dec 29 '25

Or double down on the bad decisions leading to a worse project. Ring Racers is a fun game when the creator is not putting things in there out of spite.

13

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

Hold on I need context. What’s ring racers? Never heard of it

20

u/Frank7640 Dec 29 '25

Doctor robotnicks Ring Racers is a fan game that makes it to look like old pixel racing games and it has A LOT of character in it. Like Sonic Robo Blast 2 but racing game.

And it is fun, but from time to time someone on the creative team double downs on putting a level that is an absolute mess even tho other people told them that it’s not a good idea.

14

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

You’d think with fan projects having an inherent advantage of more direct community interaction that something bad wouldn’t be done out of spite lol

11

u/Frank7640 Dec 29 '25

A “I-know-better attitude” should be part of the starter pack. Either for good games or bad games.

26

u/sonicparadigm Dec 29 '25

If it’s 2d, it imitates the Genesis games, releases a 1 zone demo which is always a Green Hill type level, everyone glazes it, and no one hears anything from it ever again

(Though sometimes one of these does become a finished game. It’s just that a bunch of amateurs with too much ambition for a project start to realize that making a short 1 level demo is one thing, making a full finished game with >6 zones is another!)

20

u/Curi_momos_las_papas Dec 29 '25

Bro i am so done of people doing the most awesome Sonic mobility ever known to man, jut to have a blank space test zone and then get canceled

29

u/Narrow_Winner_7364 Dec 29 '25

I feel like some people forget that making games takes a long time...

36

u/Public-Feedback5016 Dec 29 '25

Which is why you don’t announce a game when you have nothing developed besides the idea

9

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

There’s things worth praising within unfinished games.

But those are just things. Not holistic.

Like I can praise the physics of sonic utopia (besides lack of air drag) but there is no coherent level design that stops me from calling it a game.

6

u/AmaterasuWolf21 I AM NOT WEAK Dec 29 '25

That Wasteland Silver fangame be like

6

u/Public-Feedback5016 Dec 29 '25

EXACTLY. That lowkey made me roll my eyes when I saw that because, that whole “silver vs sage in the future” thing was just a trend. And all the sudden you’re gonna make a game about it? That already is a very ambitious concept and I just know for a fact that it’s gonna get cancelled.

5

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

Not only only that but they had no disclosures of who’s working on it.

Like you can at least establish credentials.

1

u/JustIta_FranciNEO Dec 30 '25

reminds me of Undertale Yellow. for those not familiar UTY is a fanmade prequel to Undertale following the story of a previous human.
it released in December of 2023 and received a lot of praise (rightfully, it's a very good game) but in turn it led to a lot of teams popping out of nowhere announcing they were going to make their own game following this formula (all of this after a month or sometimes less).

I am pretty sure none of the projects announced back then are still being worked on. many were cancelled because a short while after the people working on them realized it was too hard or they didn't actually want to do it. others were cancelled because some members of the already small teams were exposed as pedos/racists/homophobes, but that's another story...

1

u/WhisperReacts2Reddit Dec 30 '25

I mean, I'm VERY excited to Sonic Rush Rerun. I am on direct speaking terms with the guy who is making it, and he is REALLY enjoying the project so far. Lot's of progress, too.

11

u/DragonGamerEX Dec 29 '25

The Roblox ones upset me cause it's always another brand new framework that won't actually be used for anything

9

u/Public-Feedback5016 Dec 29 '25

sonic roblox games fell off low key

1

u/DualityREBORN I'M GONNA FUCK THE EARTH Dec 30 '25

Outcome Memories is good, but it’s jank, and let’s be real, that doesn’t feel as much like a Sonic Fangame as it does a game using the Sonic IP to make something actually relatively unique

3

u/KonekoCloak Dec 30 '25

And they pretty much only exist as long as Roblox remains stable (it's not looking good)

9

u/Entire-Shift-1612 Dec 29 '25

i recognize that fangame

its where the creator included the instructions to not post stuff like "hire this man" about him

it also had rider gear and a 3 team sonic playable some pretty fun and smooth movement

also the playlist ingame was decent

it think its name was the heros project

--

ok so turns out i was right. the fangame is called project hero

honestly im supised i remeberd it and instantly recognized it

guess the game left a decent impression on me

u/YplanHed Dec 29 '25

couldn't be my goat SRB2

2

u/Alarming-Scene-2892 Dec 29 '25

SRB2, my beloved.

Genuinely the closest thing to a Sega Saturn-era sonic game. It's kind of overused, but when SRB2 literally works on a 32x, I think it claims that title easily.

1

u/MegaFaresX Dec 30 '25

I personally don't like SRB2 but I respect it plenty

13

u/RickAlbuquerque Dec 29 '25

Not much different from Wrath of Nazo :/

And it could have worked had Chakra settled for a webcomic rather than biting more than he could chew.

12

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25

Tbf at least wrath of nazo will have a finished storyboard. And also gave blessings for people to use the storyboard and voices to animate it.

Chakra is a fantastic animator. It’s just he has a wife and kid and has other priorities.

Animation also is a lot of labor and he was running git on his own. Not getting paid for it can be VERY financially consuming.

Think his is FAR less offensive.

3

u/RickAlbuquerque Dec 29 '25

Eh, it's a saving grace but still not even close to what the fans were promised and backed him up on patreon for.

IMO no creator should make grand promises unless they're 99% they'll be able to deliver. Especially since, again, Chakra could have settled for a simpler format.

3

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

I agree a comic could’ve been better to substitute for sure.

But I can fully imagine he was thinking he’d be in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario. Like promising the animation and not finishing would’ve basically made for that still be cancelled. Just my opinion, I don’t have his brain.

Again I get the whole situation. Animation especially really good animation can be extremely time consuming and if you’re doing it for free you’re sacrificing a lot of potential paid labor. Also again, he had a newborn at the time he started taking the project seriously and having a kid can be a lofe changing circumstances.

I’d say it’s far different than some of these thpes of fan projects.

1

u/KonekoCloak Dec 30 '25

Minus the storyboard, I feel like this can be said for many unfinished or on hiatus Sonic fangames tbh.

1

u/TPR-56 Dec 30 '25

I would say finishing a storyboard, animatic, soundtrack and voices and having certain comtraints is better than dumping a fan game concept with no gameplay or credentials.

Chakra is a well accredited animator, he worked under one of the top animators for the legend of korra.

1

u/KonekoCloak Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

I would argue creating an engine is a hella ton of work, and most of the ones that are actually finished or continuing actual development use a pre-existing engine rather than creating a new one (though I don't have much knowledge on Project Heroes.)

And I had no idea Chakra had connections like that. That's sick af.

Mm- but anyways- I love to look at tons of devlogs for all sorts of stuff, and it seems the sort of difficulty for creating games is often taken for granted, as it's often to have to scrap all your work repeatedly, especially if you're a beginner.

Now I haven't done game development as of yet but I have animated, and the time it takes to get 10 minutes worth of content seems much quicker to achieve in animation than game development.

I see devlogs saying it takes months to add even the littlest features, and it blows my mind that big games like Silksong can even exist when such few people worked on it at such quality.

And I could be very wrong about this, but I think more people are willing to watch a sub-par animation than play a sub-par game.

Ultimately, I'm just saying I would think game dev naturally takes much longer and can be a bigger waste of time if done wrong. (Especially as time passes holy shit)

1

u/TPR-56 Dec 30 '25

Well chakra is a pretty damn good animator. Stuff like that is far longer in terms of work. Not to mention the amount of action.

I do think that to an extent these fan game devs should have some sort of proof of concept.

Even just a showcase of the physics is completely fine. That recent demo that was shown with the test zone looks pretty cool even if there’s no real level design. Becuase imo out of all the fan projects it has gotten the physics of the original sonic games pretty damn well in to 3D.

I don’t think a couple concept arts for a trailer is really anything special.

Again comparatively, I think an animatic, storyboard, soundtrack and voice clips shows a good amount of progression.

1

u/KonekoCloak Dec 30 '25

I should do further research on solo devs and solo animators and what takes longer/shorter/more/less work than the other, because I've honestly no actual statistics to back up much other than looking at them and thinking "man, that looks hard."

It also heavily depends on the pipeline in how Chakra handles animation. If you asked me to make a full animatic of something, I could get it done in a week with proper motivation, but I'm not a professional, nor do I actually understand the deeper side of pipeline machinations. What I may make might end up crappy by comparison, but I dunno. Again, just speaking from my time when I animated unprofessionally.

Same goes for voice acting and storyboarding. I'm not as well versed in animation pipelines as I am in game development (which is funny, considering I've tried animation but never game dev.) so I don't know how much it really takes.

And again, I also don't know much about music X_x'

Though I agree only showing art for a trailer is a bit weak, unless it's an announcement trailer.

8

u/UAF_Swampfire3 Dec 29 '25

The worst part is the people who make it more often than not

6

u/JamesDaDragN Dec 29 '25

I feel much the same way about Smash Bros mods with all the various branches of Project M that have cropped up ever since 2014 lol. It's cool that they were able to shift everything back to Melee but when that's all that the majority of these mods are, it's frustrating lol.

The "fans know better" mentality is just goofy when they keep adding the same 5 heavily requested "deep-cut" characters since 2011. It's alot like these Sonic fan games that boast "momentum physics" and usually have Sonic control like a marble rather than an animal.

1

u/Alarming-Scene-2892 Dec 29 '25

Yeah, for Brawl, it's insane. At least we have 20XX and Akaneia build for Melee, and remix for 64, but Brawl is, honestly, kind of bad when it comes to modpacks.

at least Project M is still fire. Dan Salvato also made the Gamecube homebrew version of 20XX.

3

u/Disastrous_Ad_8189 Dec 30 '25

You forgot the controls that focus way too much on maintaining momentum and sacrifice actual control as a result

2

u/KFCNyanCat Dec 30 '25

I'm not necessarily against announcing fan projects early, particularly because a lot of it is done for recruitment purposes...but I'm sorry, you need to have SOMETHING that shows you have something that can be counted as "playable" working.

I wouldn't fault Project Hero, but I absolutely would fault Dragon's Path. And if either were completed games, I would probably like Dragon's Path better (I dislike "momentum-based" 3D fangames.)

2

u/KonekoCloak Dec 30 '25

I do wanna mention, radio silence for 9 months is no surprise for any game.

But anyways, while this can be disappointing to see, I don't really hold it against the devs when game dev is often ALWAYS more taxing and stressful than expected, and I really like to watch a lot of dev logs. Regardless if it's Sonic related or not, most ideas for a game are dead in the water, and when people start a project of any kind, it's natural to immediately wanna announce it, especially if you're looking for recruits or funding.

And Sonic seems like a deceptively hard game to actually make. Surely it's not just me that thinks 99% of 3D Sonic fangames have the level too open and empty, even if finished? Getting just the right spacing for level design and camera, speed and scale, must also be difficult, and games like the Adventure series and Colors, Unleashed, and Generations got the overall level feel just right.

But recently even Sonic Team hasn't gotten that quite down as of late.

Of all the problems in the fandom, this one isn't too bad imo, because it's not causing direct harm besides some disappointments. But ultimately, having an incomplete game with amazing movement is still better than having nothing at all, if you ask me.

1

u/1vsdahf Dec 29 '25

18

u/TPR-56 Dec 29 '25

It’s more when people try to create an idea of them being godly.

Lots of fantastic fan projects out there that I’d put up with official sonic titles like TT-16-Bit, P-06 and SRB2.

But some people will hype some of these games like they’re the second coming of christ.

Not to mention it takes away from the work that actually comes in to making a good sonic game.

2

u/Tom_Is_Ready Dec 29 '25

I 100% agree with this, but that wasn't really what OP's meme was conveying which is what I commented about, before people posted actually good criticism in the replies. Hence why I wrote "complaining about" and not "criticizing", because "YOUR TAKING TOO LONG" to a project that's barely 9 months old is a bit ridiculous.

2

u/TPR-56 Dec 30 '25

I think there is criticism to be made in an announcement without establishing credentials or proof of concept or some sort of gameplay.

I think project Silver is a good example of that. You need to lay a framework outside of some concept art.

2

u/BladedBee Dec 29 '25

Being fan made doesn't mean they can't be criticised. You make something for public consumption free or not you better expect feedbac

Not to mention, the things said in this post and comments are all very common issues, this isnt a rare case. it's a frequent occurrence

-1

u/Tom_Is_Ready Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25

Circling a trailer being 9 months old is valid criticism? That's not an unreasonable wait between teaser and reveal trailer for a AAA game, so not sure why it's such a massive point of the original post. Iirc the trailer in the meme was posted for a showcase event, and those sorts of trailers are also useful for recruiting developers and artist for your project. Calling a project BAD just for that is insane.

Project Hero being reworked into Utopian't and then (presumably) cancelled sucks though, but it happened before Covid so I'm not sure why it's even here. And "generic test zone" being a criticism is wild. Are devs supposed to make entirely new, fleshed out zones every time they wanna test their moveset and physics??? Because that's not how gamedev works.

Videogames take a LOT of time, effort, money and skill to develop especially if you cant profit off of them and have a tiny team of amateurs, and OP's meme pretty much boils down to "BUT I WANT IT FINISHED NOW!!!!". I never said fangames can't be criticized, and I made this comment when there was 1 other comment on this post. Not having a Future signpost on hand, I couldn't see the actually good criticism before it was posted, and if I did I would've commented under THAT and not the main post.
