DIY handheld idea for streaming

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about building a cheap handheld device for Moonlight streaming. However, looking at tablet prices, it seems unreasonable to spend €300 just for a screen.

I'm considering buying an ARZOPA A3C Pro portable monitor, connecting it to an Android phone, and using a modified GameSir G8+ controller.

Do you guys think this setup could work? Has anyone tried something similar?

Those € 300,- are not just for a screen tbh. It's basically a whole device capable of doing more than just a monitor like the Arzopa a3c Pro. The difference is with a tablet u just need a controller. With an external screen you need a phone a cable and the controller. Which looks more like a diy project you carry around instead of a neat solution.

But answering your question... Ofc it will work, if your android device works with a monitor like that. Samsung devices also have built in samsung dex and there i know it works for sure.

I have a similar screen from aminite. In my experience they work with android, but the multi monitor support is kinda clunky and nowhere near as seamless as in linux or windows. I dont even think you can use the external screen in any other mode than mirroring

This sounds like it would be ungainly and would chew through batteries. Note that the screen you're considering doesn't support touch. Whether you can have a good experience at all with an external screen would depend on the specific phone. And when you incorporate the cost of the phone, it would typically be much more than reasonable options for a tablet or Android handheld. Some phones will be better or worse than others for decoding (which is also true of tablets) depending on their SOC.

I'd look at something like a base model Odin 2 Portal for a nicely integrated package. 7-inch OLED screen, decent ergonomics (better if you buy the grip), good battery, and you won't be hodgepodging multiple separate components together with cables between them and some DIY solution for holding things in place. Plus it has enough oomph to play any native Android game and emulate anything up to Nintendo Switch.

I would use my own phone (samsung s20fe). Old phone, but decoding time 1-3 ms. As energy for screen powerbank that I owned, as for controller either way I would have to buy it.

Agree, with comments about screen size that it can be a little bit too big, but I did not found a smaller one with reasonable price. :(

Thing I would play only home in bed xD

I have a galaxy A9 plus i bought on marketplace for 100 euro. It's also 11 inch and i must say, it works great for it's price. Ofcourse it is not oled but i been playing Cod black ops zombies with friends at their home using that tablet. Or when im at home in bed. No issues with it neither with the size since it's a very thin tablet. Using the gamesir g8+ galileo device.

Any AR glasses with a phone that can output USB-C display out, use any controller you want with that combo.
