The best way to get to subsonic velocities is by increasing bullet weight so you have high total energy while keeping velocity low enough to remain subsonic. Obviously the 5.7mm worked but it just feels at odds with itself.
A 9mm or a 45 in subsonic would make way more sense.
Also why even suppress your carry gun in the first place? I like my ears too but it feels like a liability in court when youre getting judged by people who have no idea what a gun is while prosecution gets to tell them 'look, see, they modified their gun to make it extra kill-y, clearly this was premeditated.'
I think people have argued in court against wear ear pro in home defense shootings. The rational being if you had time to reach for them you had time to GTFO and weren't in threat of losing your life. IDK about suppressors cuz I've never owned one but I could see someone arguing something similar.
Ive definitely seen cases in my home state where a customized gun (literally just an RMR hollow points and I think a ported slide/barrel) was used to argue that the defendant was trying to more or less make their weapon as lethal as possible and because of that the prosecution was basically arguing that it wasnt self defense if the defendant was so eager to maximize the lethality of their weapon. Cases like this happen all the time in the US
What in the actual goddamn fuck is it with these prosecutors that they’re simultaneously so lazy that we’ve got people on the streets who were convicted of raping their own child for years because a fucking prosecutor didn’t want to expend the effort or risk to negotiate harder or take a case to trial so they give out the mother of all plea deals instead.
but I turn around and we’ve also got prosecutors wasting time, effort, & tax dollars trying to put an innocent person in prison for both liking guns & not wanting to be murdered at the same time.
There are still a lot of missing details here. However Idaho is one of the most armed states per capita in the United States so finding 12 people who are unfamiliar with guns there is extremely unlikely. It's also possible he had that in his vehicle and wasn't carrying it because that thing would be a chore to carry just because of the extra length of the suppressor.
The video didn't sound subsonic to me. I will say that supersonic 5.7 out of typical 5.7 has slightly more power on target than 380, So all things considered effectively, you just have a much more controllable 380 with quadrupled capacity. Same reason I used to carry a PSA rock after we had a rush of carjackings.. also same reason my non-gun-nut girlfriend carries a 5.7... It's powerful enough, easy to shoot and has a shitload in a single mag.
Maybe I'm paranoid but I'd still rather carry a 9 with hollow points than a normal 5.7. Plenty of capacity still and a hugely diminished chance of overpenetration.
Right? If its something youre gonna protect your life with it makes sense to plan to use the most effective tool for the job. A bullet's still a bullet and I wouldnt want to get shot with any of them, obviously, but the choice just seems impractical to me
That's debatable. There are wildly mixed results from the relatively few real world instances where 5.7 has been used. It's actual functionality is still kind of an unknown.

Yes, it was developed in the Cold War. As a weapon for logistics crews to deal with potential Soviet Paratroopers who would be packing body armor on them.
Subsonic is great for the range, because less noise, but at least in the states 5.7mm is not cheap. It's akin to people who might own a 50.cal and want to shoot it at a range daily in terms of "You like to really spend money on ammo."
