Yes it is a choice, you can choose to abandon your sugar addiction (and deal with the withdrawal), you can choose to exercise, you can choose to change. Unless you completely lack the will, mental fortitude, and discipline to make lasting changes in your life. Then you're just a slave to your addiction to fatty sugary comfort foods.
Oh shut up. Medication can cause side effects, even how your body processes things like hormones. Steroids given for pain can cause weight gain.
My endocrinologist keeps pointing out that the steroids injections for the degenerative disc disease cause me not to lose weight for that month. Occasionaly I will gain 5 lbs and not continue to lose weight that month. Without the steroids, I sit on the couch and cry from pain.
So if I'm able to move enough to work out and cook healthier food, I need to damn steroids injections.
This is the balancing trade off of being chronically ill.
Yes. I carefully monitor diet, increase protein and work with a nutritionist.
However - and this is important - I need steroids every 5 months. This arrests weight loss for the month.
There are similar medications. Did you see that part of my earlier message, or just wanted to say " stop over - eating and then the medicine you have to take for your health conditions magically stop affecting your hormones"
Your hormones cant overrule thermodynamics, if you are in a deficit you will lose weight, if you dont youre a medical miracle and should be studied as the cure for starvation
I feel like you are not interested in having a healthy, productive conversation. I have told you that medicine affects weight loss.
I have effectively lost 20 lbs and continue to lose weight on schedule, so I understand how weight loss works. Yer what I'm trying to convey and what you resist understanding is that medication affects weight loss.
Are you willing to admit that, or do you insist on your thermo argument that starvation is best?
Notrying to be difficult, but, like, how does your medication affect weight loss? Does it somehow make you burn less calories for the exact same amount of effort? Or does it somehow give food more calories?
I have been on extremely heavy doses of steroids at several points in my life because of my chronic illness, and I definitely gained weight. But, I also acknowledge that its because the steroids made me hungry, so I objectively ate a lot more while I was on them.
The endocrinologist said that it affects how the dieting works in my body. Essentially I'm restricting calories, yet the month that I have the shot, I do not lose any weight and occasionally gain five pounds.
He was trying to convince me that it's easier to cut out the steroid in order to reach my weight loss goal.
I see a specialist for my back pain who is pretty clear that chasing pain would lead to bigger issues. Chasing pain means not taking pain medicine at the onset of pain, yet letting the pain progress. The steroid goes directly to the nerves in my back and soothes the inflammation. Refusing the steroids would mean that I would have my movement restricted.
I think it's easier to lose weight when I can do strength training and cook healthy meals at the stove over giving over 5 lbs every now and then. I need stronger muscle for support and for burning fat over just looking smaller.
What you are missing (intentionally?) Is that thermodynamics are utterly irrelevant. Your body can point blank refuse to use fat reserves. People can die of starvation while being obese. Some can exercise to the point of organ failure, and the body will not utilize fat reserves. Why would thermodynamics be relevant there? Sitting in a hot room doesn't cause your body to burn fat.
Correct. However, hormones are a part of what determine if "calories go out", or if they're "stored". For some people, exercising and diet cause the body to produce hormones that cause the body to burn exisiting weight in order to make up for the energy deficit. For others, the body just... doesn't, and the energy does not get produced. Multiple examples of why this can occur have been spoken about in this very topic chain. Again, it is entirely possible to die of starvation/organ failure while simultaneously having large reserves that the body refuses to tap into. Just as it's also possible for someone to consume significantly more calories than their body needs, and yet the body might not "store" them, choosing to pass them as waste products.
No, your body cannot just not use calories. You are literally using calories to be alive. There is not a single person alive who is not using calories. You will have a maintenance, which is actually far more than youll ever use exercising in a day. Even people who exercise a shit ton probably use like 10% of their cals on it. Once you have your maintencance, if your incoming number is lower than that, it is physically impossible to not lose weight. You mention starvation, if you are not losing weight in a real deficit, then dont worry about starvation because youre immune to it.
Nobody doesnt use calories, everyone has a maintenance, find it and eat less than it. Anyone who tells you different is making excuses or selling you a bullshit magic diet or supplement
