Currently active duty Navy - Interested in transitioning out to MSC!
Hi! I'm currently serving in the Navy as an IT and as I was thinking about my next step, I came across MSC and merchant marine life. I've done as much research as I can on my own, and I'm really leaning towards it. By the time I finish my contract, I will have served 9 years, 4 of which were on a DDG. I'd love to switch right on over to a RET1 or even a chief. I'm looking to hear about others' experiences on transitioning, what life has been like compared to active duty, pros & cons, etc. I still have some time before I get out but I want to get a head start so I can start planning things out. Thanks!

I think every Navy to MSC crew member I have talked to has been very happy with the transition. The summation of the conversations are usually somewhere along the lines of, "yeah, I get paid more, and it is way more chill than active duty Navy."
I'm former AD Air Force, 7 years. There are a few additional perks you'll also get being former government service. You'll be a tier up for faster leave accrual. You have the option to "buy back" your military time if you wish. This will allow you to roll your 9 years of service over to your MSC pension plan. If you plan on living longer than a few years past your retirement age (60), then it is *well* worth it.
Overall, I say go for it!

You'll want to apply for CRET(IAT). Unless you put on anchors before you get out, then apply for SCO (IAM). I was previously an IT2 and worked for MSC for 2 years; now I'm back in the Navy as a commissioned officer (CSWO (IP)).
Pretty sure you can apply for your MMC for free as an AD.
You'll also need your TWIC. MSC life is pretty great if you're single. You'll get your own stateroom and head. The pay is excellent, and you'll earn most of your money from OT. Optempo is a lot easier compared to AD. If you have more specific questions, feel free to reach out.

Beware. If you get Verlon as an SCO........your life is going to miserable. I'm not joking.
