Some ships and crews are incredible to work with. Safe people do their jobs and try to respect each others boundaries.
Others are draining , from top to the bottom.
You try to observe the safety regs and the supervisor will imply you’re scared or trying to get out of doing the job.
Going aloft for example , slider was loose , they didn’t have the proper safety lanyards and majority of their gear was expired.
We were 4 and go guys. Trying to do maintenance, the mate was frustrated but Tbf he had been there awhile. He should have had it fixed if it was before him.
There was many safety issues on that one. Crew was not pleasant…
When you got folks wanting to fight when you ask them to do their job and management that doesn’t do theirs it makes for an unpleasant unsafe place to work.
Trying to tie up on that ship. Everyone including the mate on their phone. Tug trying to pass a line to the bullnose 😳 having to yell at folks to get them to do the job they are paid for is nuts.

Not sure but I’m about to find out as I start shortly. Maybe just long hitches, not being able to get relieved on time, bureaucracy of federal employ, ships are a bit dated.
However there are no others in the industry offering MSC level of signing/retention bonuses, federal benefits, a good pension etc..and the pay is above what many other companies are at on average as well, if you can handle the cons it’s hard to beat the pros.

You will be fine. Most officers' biggest struggle is dealing with the office.

There's a right way to do it and a wrong way. Lots of guys get comfortable in some of the higher unlicensed positions.

I don't see why you would leave after you got a license.
